BrakesANTI-LOCK BRAKESThe purpose of the anti-lock braking system (ABS) is toprevent the wheels from locking while braking, therebyenabling the driver to retain steering control of the car.Under normal braking conditions, (where sufficient roadsurface friction exists to reliably bring the car to a halt withoutthe wheels locking), ABS will not be activated. However, should the braking force exceed the available adhesionbetween the tyres and the road surface causing the wheels tolock (on slippery roads, for example), then ABS willautomatically come into operation. This will be recognisable by a rapid pulsation felt through thebrake pedal.IMPORTANT• The fact that a car is fitted with ABS must nevertempt the driver into taking risks that could affecthis/her safety or that of other road users. In allcases, it remains the driver’s responsibility to drivewithin normal safety margins, having dueconsideration for prevailing weather and trafficconditions.ABS cannot overcome thephysical limitations ofstopping the car in too short adistance, cornering at too high aspeed, or the danger ofaquaplaning, i.e. where a layerof water prevents adequatecontact between the tyres andthe road surface.128
