BrakesBrakesFOOT BRAKEFor added safety, the hydraulic braking system operatesthrough dual circuits. If one circuit should fail, the other willcontinue to function, but increased brake pedal travel, greaterpedal pressure, and longer stopping distances will beexperienced. In the event of a brake failure where only one circuit isoperational, the car should be brought to a halt as soon astraffic conditions safely allow. DO NOT continue driving -seek qualified assistance.Servo assistanceThe braking system is servo assisted, but ONLY while theengine is running. Without servo assistance greater brakepedal effort is necessary to safely control the car, resulting inlonger stopping distances. Always be aware of the following:• NEVER allow the car to freewheel with the engine turnedoff.• ALWAYS take particular care when being towed with theengine turned off.If the engine should stop for any reason while driving, bringthe car to a halt as quickly as traffic conditions safely allow, and DO NOT pump the brake pedal lest the braking systemlose any remaining servo-assistance available.Electronic brake force distributionYour car is equipped with Electronic Brake force Distribution(EBD), which, in order to maintain braking efficiency, automatically proportions the distribution of braking forcesbetween front and rear axles, under all load conditions. For example; under light loads EBD applies less effort to therear brakes in order to maintain vehicle stability; however ifthe car is heavily laden or towing, then more effort will beapplied to the rear brakes. The EBD system incorporates a monitoring system, whichchecks that all electrical components are in working orderwhen the starter switch is turned on and also at frequentintervals while the car is being driven. The EBD monitoringsystem is linked to the brake system warning light on theinstrument panel. If this light illuminates while driving, or2NOTE: DO NOT rest your foot onthe brake pedal while driving; thismay overheat the brakes, reducetheir efficiency and causeexcessive wear.Operating tip: Driving throughwater or even very heavy rainmay adversely affect brakingefficiency. Dry the brakingsurfaces by intermittent lightapplication of the foot brake, afterfirst ensuring that you are at asafe distance from other roadusers.NEVER move the carwithout the enginerunning because brake servoassistance may not beavailable. The brakes will stillfunction, but more pedalpressure will be required tooperate them.125
