Fuel SystemTYPE OF FUELPetrol enginesThe RON value (octane rating) and type of petroleum(unleaded or leaded) available at garage forecourts, will varyin different parts of the world. For example, in most Europeancountries 95 RON unleaded fuel is readily available, but inother parts of the world fuel supplies may be limited to leadedor lower octane fuels only. Before a new car is delivered to the first owner, the engine istuned to suit the fuel supplies commonly available in themarket in which the car is to be purchased. However, if thecar is later exported to a different country, or is used to travelbetween different territories, you should be aware that theavailable fuel supplies may not be compatible with the enginespecification. If in doubt, consult a Rover dealer for advice. The RON value quoted alongside is a MINIMUMrequirement for the United Kingdom and most Europeanmarkets and can be safely exceeded.IN AN EMERGENCY (and only if the correct fuel isunavailable), lower octane rated fuel can be used for verylimited periods of moderate, low speed motoring, providedengine ‘knocking’ does not occur.Diesel enginesThe quality of diesel fuel can vary in different countries andonly clean, good quality fuel should be used. It is importantthat the sulphur content of diesel fuel does not exceed 0.3%.In Europe, all supplies should be within this limit, but in otherparts of the world, you should check with your supplier.2Petrol fuel specification: 95RON unleaded petrol to EN 228specification.Diesel fuel specification: Goodquality diesel fuel to EN 590specification.111
