Animal Crusaders • Commemorative Issue • October 2010Plant with a MindPlant with SentimentReal treasure lies within. If we havea sensitive mind, we don’t needto search for pleasure from earthlypossessions; nature has enoughcharm to keep us happy, always!I have had the pleasure ofwitnessing a very touchinginteraction between a pottedplant and it’s hobbyist tenderwhich consolidated my faith innature’s power of keeping ushappy and away from the earthlycomplications of day to day life.I went to call on a friend who hadjust come back from a visit to herdaughter living abroad. She askedme to give her a little time to getme some refreshments. As I knewof her hobby of keepinguncommon and exotic plants, Ithought of strolling out on to herbalcony where she kept a largenumber of beautiful pottedplants. I was looking at each oneof them, appreciating the beautyand grandeur. She told me earlier that whenevershe has to stay away from herhouse for more than a day , shewould always engage someoneto look after and water her greenpals, the “DEMETER’s children” !To my utter surprise I found oneof the plants with large leaves hadall shining and bright like theother ones but with droopingleaves. As I was contemplating onthe ‘strange’ posture of the leaveswhich I remember seeing earlierin normally erect position; I feltmy hostess standing behind. Ilooked at her face and could notmiss tear drops rolling down hercheeks. She pushed me asidegently, caressed and kissed eachone of the leaves and raised herface towards me. Before I couldask anything, she explained thatthis particular plant is a bit more‘sentimental’ than the other ones.In spite of regular care, all herplants miss her personal touch!I felt a strange kind of fulfillmenton finding this aspect of the plantlife. Though, thanks to AcharyaJ.C.Bose, we all know that plantsare living beings, yet how manyof us actually realize that theplants have minds too!* DEMETER-the Greek goddess ofplant & agriculture~ Sudeshna Bose Bhanja35
