Animal Crusaders • Commemorative Issue • October 2010Memories of Luluperhaps because I was afraid thatwe would not be allowed to keepthe pup.In the course of time, Lulu wasinevitably discovered by a hugewhite, fierce street dog and,equally inevitably, gave birth to alitter of seven pups. Kudu namedthem Snowwhite and the Sevenpups. But the time had come forus to leave Sandeman and wewere allowed to take only two ofthe pups with us, besides Lulu.We chose a female which hadLulu’s colouring and a white male.While traveling by traln, fathersaid he had never seen suchagony as on Lulu’s face in thedog-box. Our hosts in Delhi werekeen to have one of the pups andwe parted with the white male.Many years later I was told thathe had become as fierce as itsfather and only the head of thefamily could touch him. Thefemale pup, named Gogai, hadLulu’s happy looks and woke usevery morning, scampering overthe mattresses on the floor inLulu-the most comfortable place on earth,at the master’s feetMadras where we slept. She alsobecame the adored pet of theyouth of the house, for he fed herhis glass of milk every morning.So Kudu and I sat outside hisroom one morning andcomplained aloud to each otherthat he was taking our pup fromus. He emerged laughing the nextmorning and said he had nointention of taking our pup, soGogai lost its daily dose of milk.When we were in Ottapalam,however, a cousin greatly wantedit and we left it with her when wewere going to Bharatpur. We sawGogai some years later, a biggerversion of Lulu, lovely but moregrave.Lulu stayed on with mysister Kunja after she got marriedand lived up to a ripe old age.~ K. P. S.
