Animal Crusaders • Commemorative Issue • October 2010Memories of LuluMemories of Lulu, the sweetest natureddog I have known.I went down to the pantry asusual, early one morning. ThereJaneth Khan the boy who used tohelp us greeted me.Mundi-baba, he said inUrdu, I have brought youa dog; and there behindhim was a cheerfullookinglittle dog, aboutfour months old, with alovely gold and whitecolouring, a snout coveredwith some hair, a pinkstring tight around itsneck, but the effect of allwas spoilt by a long, uglytail, with no hair at all onit. The tail became thesubject of derision of themilitary officers and their wives, for Fort Sandeman in Baluchistanwhere we were living then in theearly 40s was essentially a militarycantonment, and time and againthey adjured us to have it docked;but they lived to see it grow intoa beautiful, hairy, white and goldthing, the pride of Lulu, for thatwas what we named the pup, after our teacher’s favouritecousin, as suggested by her.14My parents gave me permissionto keep the pup and it followedme cheerfully that morning intothe long hall that was ourclassroom. But not so cheerful wasthe reception she got. One look, and Kudu my twin brotherscooted up, as it were, the mantelpieceand Thuli my sistermounted the ping-pong table.Lulu- photographed by a friend inChina in mid’80sThere they both remained for therest of that morning’s class, withLulu looking really happy belowthem, wagging its tail furiouslyand barking, trying to persuadethem to descend.Lulu was quite soon given aplaymate by one of the jamadars,a male dog of superior breed, witha smooth brown and white coat. His introduction to our householdwas not one of the happiest, forhe was placed on the ping-pongtable, and the tiny pup that hewas, unable to stand, he slid cleanoff the table and, of course, howled. We never took to him aswe did to Lulu, for there wassomething superior and aloofabout him, and, as a male,he went wandering. Luluwould stand on top of thehillock and cry withapprehension when Lindy, for that was what wenamed him, went downthe hillock to play with thetommies’ dogs below; butotherwise the two dogshad great fun together, running the vast emptyspaces in Sandeman andthe snow in winter and, itmust be admitted, destroying the fur slippersof our house – guests. After she had been with us sometime, one of the jamadars told methat Lulu had belonged to theclub steward. I could well believethat, for I remembered thatcheerful little pup, with the pinkstring around its neck, come outto greet the guests. I do notremember passing on thisinformation to my parents,
