Page 6THE GARDEN WHISTLEBrian’s train leaves the Winery Photo: John RobinsonThe winery need a vineyard and pickersdisguise that ugly neighbour’s fence. No I don’t knowyour neighbour, I was referring to the fence not yourneighbour!I actually took less photos thannormal at a running day as firstlyI was having so much fun drivingmy live steam Manawanui aroundthe railway, and secondly enjoyingthe company of mates that theafternoon just flew past. Thereare a few more pictures howevero n t h e w e b a twww.forum.gscalecentral.net/Lyndi-Railway-Revisited-by-the-WGRG-m235381.aspxUnusual for a running afternoon,we didn’t have that many visitingtrains, but Chris Drowley and Idid raise steam in amongst Brian’strack powered trains. ChrisDrowley’s Regner Vincent is sucha cute wee steamer. An advantageof having visiting stock on yourrailway is they always seem tofind that spot in your track thatneeds tweaking. And Vincentdid just that but with the skilledeye of the likes of David Allen alittle bit of repacking ballasthere, a slight tweak on a trackjoint there and reliable servicewas resumed. There were two regrets for theafternoon; the weather didgradually deteriorate throughthe afternoon, becoming quitecold with rain returning 10minutes after everyone left (wellexcept our family). And thesecond regret was something Iloath doing, I caused a majorderailment then rapidlydeployed the great hand from thesky causing more carnage. That would have been notso bad but it was right when Brian was proudlyPhoto: John Robinson

Page 9THE GARDEN WHISTLEA Day on the Fraser LineFirst clean the track, using the patented Ross Fraser Track CleanerA very busy yardPhoto: Robert den BoestertDetail showing Track CleanerTrack cleaning photos byKerry PattersonOn a perfect Spring afternoon manymembers of the ChristchurchGarden Railway Society met at thehome of Ross Fraser, owner of TheFraser Line in Kaiapoi.Ross has spent many hours workingon the signalling of the railway andthis was to be a good test. Thesignalling relied on trains using trackpower, or at least having a lightedwagon, for the detectors to work.Don Ellis had fitted two wagons withlights to enable his battery operatedtrain to be detected. Other batteryoperated trains, not fitted with a loadacross the rails were not able to bedetected.Running a battery operatedtrain meant one had to followa track powered train andfollow the signals as shown tothe track powered unit.Dennis Lindsay tried todemolish the bridge out of theshed and the first signal, withhis battery powered K27. Arather large engine. The K27was a Brass AMS modelrecently converted for batteryoperation.

Daffodil Day in CartertonLee Collett, Murray Clarke and Lloyd Dickens setting up the layout in the courtyard of theCarterton Event Centre.Page 13THE GARDEN WHISTLEOn Sunday 9thSeptember 2012 wehad our WairarapaGarden RailwayGroup’s publicdisplay at theCarterton DaffodilDay This year wehad a change ofvenue. Instead ofhaving a display inthe car park outsidet h e C a r t e r t o nRailway Station wemoved into theEvent Centre whichis in the middle oftown. This wasfortunate as theweather was wet, cold and miserable(not like theW a i r a r a p ashould be).Consequentlyfewer people visited Carterton because ofthe inclement weather. However, we stillhad an enjoyable day and met somepeople who showed an interest in gardenrailways. We want to thank Lee Collett andWarren Stringer who supplied the trackfor the day and Murray Clarke forbringing his buildings along with plantssupplied by Clareville Nursery. The locosand rolling stock were supplied by Lloyd,Joan, Murray and Charlie.Photos and text by Lee Collett,Carterton.Part of our club display which was in a room off the courtyard
