The slope from El. 2 m PWD to the top of the floodplain, commonly at about 6 m PWD, or to thetop of embankments at El. 10.7 m PWD, is protected with concrete blocks of various dimensionsplaced side-by-side in rows. Thinner blocks are used at the lower levels where the wave load is lower.At higher levels blocks are placed in alternating rows with a 5 cm difference in thickness. Theresulting irregular or stepped surface reduces wave run-up, increases the weight per unit area andallows people to walk more easily up and down the slope. The average block size is assumed to be50 cm. The placement of this layer requires machine handling.2-13
