Thegreat theologian AbrahamJoshua Heschel put it best.“More than Jews keep Shabbat,Shabbat keeps the Jewishpeople.”Shabbat is the heart andcenter of our week and ourJewish lives. Shabbat morningat the synagogue is whereindividuals and families weaveinto community, wheremeaning is brought to themundane, where feelingovercomes apathy, wherebeing takes primacy overdoing, where our hearts andsouls emerge to accompanyour minds, where the ethicalmeets the ritual, and where ourroots are planted as a people ofhistory, with a unique culture,in the forest of the world. Our challenge of creatinga vibrant Shabbat experience atOhev Shalom is not now beingmet. People are not coming toservices. Why? First of all, ourservices -- the language, themelodies, the meanings, amongst other things -- aren’taccessible to a broad swath ofour members. Moreover, thereare so many demands onpeople’s time. People needmore draw than ever to chooseto come to services. And,finally, people are increasinglyfearful in the modern worldand don’t experience servicesas a soothing balm for that fear.I tell you about ourchallenge even when some ofyou may be perfectly satisfiedwith services as they are, because change is coming andyou need to be part of theprocess of improving ourservices in a way that retainsShabbat Morning, April 7“The Bible Steams Over” Come to a Shabbat of Love. A religious day of one of the festivals (Pesach,Sukkot, Shavuot) with observance virtually indistinguishable fromShabbat. What is “Chol Hamoed”? The intermediate days of Pesach and Sukkot, when “regular life” goes on (vacation-time in Israel!)

Volume 2, No. 8Page 3the best of our traditions. You need to thinkcreatively how to rejuvenate the weaker links ofour services –- mussaf, congregationalparticipation in singing, the lack of new tunes, etc. We have all glimpsed how much moreinspiring our Shabbats can be, through thedazzling experiences of Synaplex over the pastfew months.***I will address the challenge of creating more vitalShabbat life in our synagogue over four weeks.Today, I will identify the core values ofConservative Judaism, as they are expressedthrough Shabbat morning services. Next week, Iwill answer the question, “How do we approachchanging our services?” On March 24, I willelaborate on what we will change, and whatinnovations we will bring. To wrap up, onMarch 31, I will describe what the process ofchange will bring to you, and what you canbring to the process. I will focus on services inthese talks, but the process of change must alsoapply to other aspects of our ritual life as aConservative synagogue.***On to today’s topic, What are the core values ofConservative Judaism, as expressed throughShabbat morning services?I want to offer you a pneumonic to helpyou think about this question. ELASTIC. Thinkabout an ELASTIC. It has one body, can stretchand adapt to many different situations, butremains true to its core shape. Likewise, ourtraditional service works as one unit, not as setof pieces. We can stretch it, change it, but wecan’t stretch it to the point at which it will break, where we will sever the continuity with ourJewish past and Jews all over the world. Whendoes it break? That’s for next week. What does ELASTIC stand for?Egalitarianism – equal opportunity for all to beinvolved in and take leadership in oursynagogue Shabbat experience.Learning, Learning and Living in the Torahportion – studying it, deriving meaning for ourlives, bringing our lives and experiences to betterunderstand Torah.Action, the Primacy of Action – translating ourprayers and Shabbat activities into acts of socialjustice and chesed to Jews and non-Jews, here,in Israel and all over the world.Shabbat, Living in Shabbat Time – surroundingour Shabbat synagogue experience with othervital trappings of Shabbat life – candles, kiddush, and Friday night dinner.Thankfulness to God – investing our Shabbatsynagogue experience with a spirit of gratitudefor our lives, loves, and good fortunes.Integration, Integrating our Identities as Jewsand Americans, as bearers of a great traditionand as people who come to Judaism on manydifferent pathways, within the context ofShabbat.Community and Individual – Shabbat services asboth an inner spiritual experience, and abrilliantly-crafted communal expression of praiseto God.***We have the critical challenge of adapting ourShabbat services to our membership, to theirmodern sensibilities and needs. Shabbat and itsservices are at very core of who were are asJews, what we care about, and how we seek tosanctify life and improve the world. Peoplearen’t coming to participate in this core activityand this core day. We need to put our mindstogether, experiment as we are already doing, and bring innovative change. How we bringchange, that’s next week. What we change, thefollowing week. What the benefits of theprocess are, the following week.We will succeed and strengthen as aConservative Shabbat community around thenotion of elasticity. We will keep our form, change elements of our content, and pursue thecore ideals of our Conservative Jewish tradition– egalitarianism, learning, action, Shabbat, thankfulness, integration of identity, and therelationship between community and theindividual.See ya’ next week.Rabbi Mark Robbins

Page 14The Honey JarA Poem for Yom HashoahFreedom? They sit there in the rumbling jeepFeeling the vibrations run from their legs up totheir spinesThey look out of the window at the sullen greyThe rolling fields of death and sorrowThe storm clouds above as menacing as thesights below.Inside the carMen are waiting, worn and tired from days onpatrolTheir beards unshaven, the dark stubble likeashes scattered on a beachHardened by battle in trenches in bunkers, theyhave seen human hate and all that itbringsTheir morale shattered by machine gun roundsand artillery shellsIn their hands, they hold guns used too manytimes beforeBut the war will be over soon. The wheels slow down, and the doors openSoldiers file out and form in rank, their bootssloshing in the cold mudAhead lies walls, grey and worn, and behind them, buildingsA charade of civilization, apseudo-realityEmpty rail lines come and go,like the web of a BlackWidowThey enter the town, or whatseems like a townArmed and ready for anyresistance, even theremnants of a fleeing armyBut they find no enemies, nomen in greyInstead they find quiet streets, empty buildings, andbarracks in the distanceAnd all of a sudden, it isn’t atown anymore.Slowly they comeFrom the dark buildings, the worn barracks, thecrematoria lurking in the distanceThey are not men, but skeletonsGrisly and pale, and thin as bone, they walkfrom the buildings,Barely able to cry or talkAll they can do is stareIn fear and wonder at the soldiers. The soldiers are taken abackWhat horrors have nestled here in this grimplaceThe rumors are true, the tales of extinctionThe stories of atrocities unheard of in the worldAnd as a gaunt, dried up man approachesHe whispers something in a language thecaptain can’t understandAnd behind him in a room, more corpses,Bruised and broken,But nevertheless, this man is free. The captain watchesAnd turns back to his menAnd after a lifetime as asoldierAfter four years of warHe sits on a weatheredcurb and does somethinghe hasn’t done in years; He cries.Michael EloferMichael Elofer won anaward for this poem lastyear in the MordechaiAnielewicz Creative ArtsCompetition sponsored byJewish Federation. It wassubmitted by proud parentsDoris and Charley Elofer.

Free Tay-Sachs and Canavan Screening during MayFree Tay-Sachs and Canavan screening will be available at area synagogues, community centers andhospitals throughout May, sponsored by the National Tay-Sachs & Allied Diseases Association ofDelaware Valley (NTSAD-DV). For a complete llist of testing sites and times, contact 215-887-0877or ntsad@aol.com or visit www.tay-sachs.org. Carrier screening is a simple blood test performed bya certified technician. One in thirty-five Ashkenazi Jews is a Canavan carrier. One in twenty-seven isa Tay-Sachs carrier.▪ You must be tested for both diseases; carrier status for Tay-Sachs has no bearing on carrier statusfor Canavan.▪ Carriers are healthy individuals. The only way to know you carry the gene defect is to bespecifically tested for it.▪ Both Tay-Sachs and Canavan cause progressive neurological deterioration and are fatal inchildhood. No cure or treatment is available.▪ Affected children are most often born into families with no known history of the disease.Without screening, families are unaware that the deadly gene has been passed along forgenerations.▪ When both parents test positive for the same gene, there is a 25% chance with each pregnancythat their child will be born with the disease.▪ Carrier couples are encouraged to consult with a genetic counselor and physician to exploretheir many options to have a healthy family.▪ These diseases are most prevalent, but NOT exclusive to the Jewish population. Interfaithcouples and Jews by choice should be tested.Contact Rebecca TantalaNTSAD-DV Executive Director215-887-0877 • ntsad@aol.comCongregation Ohev Shalom2 Chester RoadWallingford, PA 19086The deadline for theMay issue ofThe Honey Jar isFriday April 13,12 noonTime Sensitive MaterialNon-Profit Org.U.S. Postage PaidWallingford, PAPermit No. 225
