Background• Expert committee finds hydrate potential in 1995• Indian National Gas Hydrate Program initiated in 1997• Seismic data interpretation in West and East Coasts• BSR seen in Andaman and KG Offshore• Further seismic data interpretation and special processing for mappingof BSRs in three Indian Offshore areas i.e. Andaman, Krishna Godavari& Kerala Konkan Basins• Government of India restructured NGHP in 2000• All Institutions/organizations working with a common goal undercoordination by DG, DGH as Technical Coordinator of NGHP

NGHP efforts

NGHP Studies in progress• Delineate Gas Hydrate reservoir and carry out Resourceestimation• To delineate different type of Geological settings vizaccretionary wedge and passive margins• To identify the hydrate bearing sand reservoirs• To identify locales having free gas below hydrates• Validate Prognostication

Production testing at Mallik• 2000 - 4000 cubic meters for 6 days• Cumulative production was 13,000cubic meters• Detailed analyses of the results areongoing• Depressurization method is effective

NGHP International Collaborations• USGS• USMMS• USDOE• IFM GEOMAR• JOGMEC• GFZ Potsdam ( In Pipeline )

Future Plans

Locations for Expedition-02AREA-AArea A (320 sq.km) liesin Vizag offshoreArea C ( 1280 sq.kmincluding area coveredunder NGHP-01) lies inGodavari offshoreAREA-CAREA-BArea B ( 300 sq.km) liesin Krishna offshore

Locations for Expedition-02

Challenges• No representative deepwater gas hydrates fieldexists anywhere in the world• Managing Water production rate• Sand control since the hydrate reservoirs existat very shallow depth below sea bed ( 200-400mbsf) the sands there would not be consolidated• Sea floor subsidence• Evacuation of dissociated gas
