2012 Season OutlookHead Coach Rudy Argueta is entering his fourth year as the headcoach of the Lions’ men’s soccer team. The team is coming off thebest season in program history, finishing the 2011 campaign with aprogram-best seven wins and their first-ever appearance in theHCAC Tournament.Coach Argueta is excited about what this year’s team brings tothe table.“This team is unified, positive and full of leaders,’’ Argueta states.“Our seniors have led the younger players and are ready to lead on thefield this year.”Argueta thinks the program continues to head in the right direction, and wants to capitalize on the momentum of making the conferencetournament in 2011. The plan to do that is to continue to bring intalented players who are willing to work hard and become better everyday. Combining this with the work ethic of the current players will takethe program where it wants to be, believes Argueta.“Effort, and will to win combined with talent will be the cornerstoneof the 2012 team,’’ Argueta adds. The Lions have eight seniors on this year’s team, and Arguetabelieves this will be huge for the success of the team. These eightseniors came in with Argueta four years ago, so he feels a special bondwith them. He believes this bond is important because the seniorsknow exactly what coach wants out of them.“These eight players have learned through experience, good andbad, and are ready to compete and challenge for a conference title intheir senior year.’’ Argueta says.Among these returning players are four of the top-five leadingscorers from last year’s team. Argueta expects the team to be evenbetter scoring goals this year as long as the players stay healthy.Among these returning players is junior Christopher Corbett who isalready the leading scorer in program history scoring six goals in eachof his first two seasons. Corbett was a First Team All-HCAC selectionlast fall.“He knows the game, reads it very well and can make big plays outof virtually nothing,’’ states Argueta of Corbett. Also returning is Nick Siko, who had four goals last year. Arguetabelieves Siko is one of the keys to the season, and described him asthe heart of the team, a hard worker, and a leader. Other key returningplayers include James Grzebyk (Hice), who had three goals and anassist last year, All-HCAC Second Team member Lee Rogers, whototaled three goals last year, and Nick Groman, an anchor on defensewho started all nineteen games last year. Senior goalkeeper TylerKenyon played in all 19 games last season, recording 88 saves andtwo shutouts. All the above mentioned players are seniors this season.Other seniors this season include Shawn Damen, Gabe Abraham andMichael Brunner.Along with the eight seniors, the team brought in 15 first-yearplayers, many of whom that are freshmen. Argueta believes thatat least eight of them will be ready to compete for playing timeimmediately, possibly even starting positions. Not only are they goodplayers, who will provide quality depth, they are good people off thefield as well which really helps with team unity, says Argueta. TheLions’ roster totaled 37 players heading into August, the biggest rosterin team history.Coach Argueta believes this team looks prepared to eclipse lastseason’s overall win total, and finish in the top three of the conferencestanding. Last year’s team was third in the HCAC, qualifying to theHCAC Tournament where they fell to eventual conference tournamentchampion Rose-Hulman. The top four teams in the HCAC regularseason standings advance to the HCAC Tournament. The winner thenrepresents the conference in the NCAA Division III Tournament.LOVE THE GAME“Love the game.
