American Baptist ChurchesThe Baptist World Alliance-affiliated American BaptistChurches USA (formerly the Northern Baptist Convention) isalso thoroughly liberal.As early as 1910 Baptist leader William B. Riley admittedthat the denomination had been “surrendered into the handsof the Higher Critics” (George Dollar, A History ofFundamentalism). The term “Higher Critics” refers toliberals who teach that the Bible is not the infallibly inspiredWord of God.Between 1920 and 1932, a group of fundamentalist Baptistpastors unsuccessfully attempted to root the modernism outof the convention. They formed the National Federation ofFundamentalists of Northern Baptists. In 1932, many of thesepastors left the Northern Baptist Convention because of itsliberalism and formed the General Association of RegularBaptists. In 1947, the Conservative Baptist Association ofAmerica was formed by another group of pastors whodeparted from the modernistic Northern Baptist Convention.The leaven of theological heresy has since permeated theConvention. The schools and pulpits of the American BaptistChurches are filled with men who deny the infallibleinspiration of Holy Scripture and who question or denyChrist’s virgin birth, Godhead, vicarious atonement, andresurrection from the dead. The apostate American BaptistChurch has produced some of the most notorious,blasphemous heretics of the 20th century.In 1926, the Northern Baptist annual convention debatedfor almost five hours whether to retain in its fellowship theRiverside Baptist Church of New York City, pastored bymodernist Harry Emerson Fosdick, who denied practicallyevery doctrine of the Word of God.
