the book of Acts and the Epistles I see a different kind ofChristianity, a different kind of church there, than the onethat Rick Warren has devised. Thus, I must reject Warren’sPurpose Driven methods and I must warn those who have anear to hear, regardless of how small that crowd may be today, that they not heed the siren call of the contemporary churchgrowth gurus.30

Rick Warren Preached No Gospel atTed TalksWhen Rick Warren, one of the most influential pastors inthe world, was invited to teach at Ted Talks in February 2006to a mixed secular audience of some of America’s mostprominent thinkers, a forum that he knew would be recordedand heard widely beyond the immediate audience, it was awonderful opportunity for a Baptist preacher to preach thegospel of Jesus Christ. That is the apostle Paul would have done. It was what healways did in every forum, whether in the market place atCorinth or on Mars Hill in Athens, because Paul wasconvinced that the gospel alone is the power of God (Romans1:16). Thus he testified, “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified” (1Cor. 2:2).But Rick Warren does not walk in the steps of the apostlePaul. He has a different gospel and a different objective inministry, his gospel being a human-centered gospel of doinggood, and his objective being to change the world throughhis PEACE program. As for Paul, he summarized his gospel as follows:“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I alsoreceived, how that Christ died for our sins according tothe scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he roseagain the third day according to the scriptures” (1 Cor.15:3-4).Paul said elsewhere that this gospel was delivered to himby divine revelation and that if anyone preaches anothergospel, he is under God’s curse (Galatians 1:6-12).31
