A family of three generations, Frank Stuban, 88, of Seymour, Conn., hisdaughter Susan Monks, and three of his grandchildren, Bridget, Patrick and Peter,all of Trumbull, Conn., spoke to the residents and demonstrated the intricate processof making pysanky. Traditionally, the pysanky are made during Lent, blessedat church on Holy Saturday and gifted to family and friends on Easter Sunday. Thefamily, parishioners of Ss. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Byzantine Church in Ansonia.,Conn., impressed upon the audience the importance of sharing and preserving allcultural and ethnic traditions. Youth America GrandPrix (YAGP) is the world’s largest studentballet scholarship competition; it awardsover $250,000 annually in scholarships toleading dance schools worldwide. Thecompetition is held around the world andin New York City, and is open to dancestudents of all nationalities age 9-19.Hannah (Anya) Kulas, 16, of LaGrange, Ill., who was the YAGP GrandPrix winner for the Midwest states, participatedin the finals.The preliminary competition took placeat New York University’s Skirball Center,and each dancer had to perform one contemporarydance and one classical balletvariation. Miss Kulas competed in theSenior Women’s Division, which had over50 dancers from all over the world.From this group, 10 were picked to bein the finals, which were held at the NewYork City Center. At the finals each dancerhad to perform one classical ballet variation.Miss Kulas won second place in theSenior Women’s Division. She was offereda number of scholarships and she accepteda scholarship to the National CanadianBallet in Toronto for this summer.The New York Times (March 23), in itsreview of the competition, singled outMiss Kulas: “Some of the young prizewinnersbrought personality as well astechnical ability to the stage. HannahKulas gave a fluid, musical account ofNikiyas’s Act 1 solo from ‘La Bayadere.’ ”The Danceviewtimes (March 29)Ballerina Hannah (Anya) Kulas.noted: “Hannah Kulas, the senior womensilver medal winner, and a cool, blondbeauty, gave a vivid performance ofMakarova’s version of Gamzatti’s finalact variation.”Miss Kulas who will be a senior atLyons Township High School, is an honorsstudent and is interested in pursuing acareer in ballet. She has been dancingsince the age of 4 and loves ballet.She and her parents, Myron and LiliaWowchyk Kulas, are members of theUkrainian National Association Branch 22.“Notes on people” is a feature geared toward reporting on the achievements of membersof the Ukrainian community and the Ukrainian National Association.
