And the 79-year old is downsizing.“I’m trying to get rid of some of these so my kids don’thave to!” he said.<strong>For</strong>merly listed in the Guinness Book of World Recordsand named fX network’s “Most Passionate Collector”in 1995, Art Santen is singular among U.S.opener collectors for his collection’s volume. But hestarted saving openers in the 1950s for the same reasonas most: regional or nostalgic interest. “My father soldhis tavern and just kept a ring of Griesedieck Brothersbeer bottle openers,” said Art. “That got me wonderingif other companies had so many openers,” he said.Other companies did have openers and, with the rise ofmicrobreweries, more openers are being made. “Thereare about 1,600 styles of openers, with more than17,000 unique openers known,” said John Stanley, whoedits the quarterly newsletter of the <strong>Just</strong> <strong>For</strong> <strong>Openers</strong>collectors club at www.just-for-openers.org.Stanley reports eBay sale prices in the newsletter; theJuly edition reported many beer and soda openersavailable for less than $20. “We tend to get membersin the <strong>Just</strong> <strong>For</strong> <strong>Openers</strong> club who are in their 40s or 50sand are looking for a less expensive entry into breweryadvertising,” said Stanley.Art Santen has more than 40,000 bottle openers,corkscrews, cigar box openers and other packageopeners in his collection.
