INTRODUCTIONMODULE 2009The fall semester of 2009 starts on August 19 at 13.15 inthe SSE Auditorium.SSE REGISTRATIONYour official registration to SSEwill take place on August 19.You register by signing the SSEMSc Registration Book. This hasbeen a tradition since the foundingof the School in 1909 and it takesplace in the Board Room of theSchool. Please note that you haveto be here to register in person, oryour place at SSE will be revoked.IMPORTANT DATESJuly 30August 19August 24Dead-line forconfirming yourplace at SSE(www.studera.nu)Introductionmodule beginsThe GM programstartsThe purpose of the introduction module isto create a solid foundation and to set a positiveatmosphere for the two intensive studyyears to come. During the first day you willbe registered and get practical informationabout SSE and the services offered. August20 will be devoted to your General ManagementProgram and you will get to knowthe faculty and your new classmates. On thelast day of the introduction the SSE StudentAssociation will arrange social activitiesduring which you will get to know eachother and become familiar with Stockholm.Expect three full days packed with activitiesfrom early morning to late evening.Please note that the introduction moduleis mandatory for all master students. OnAugust 24 the specialization courses/modulesbegin, and on the same day there will bea short introduction module (course 198) tothe SSE computer environment.IMPORTANT!SSE is a private institution of higher educationand differs in some respects fromits state run counterparts in Sweden. It isof great importance that you are awareof the SSE Study Regulations, which canbe found in the SSE Academic Policies(MSc GM). When registering at SSEyou will sign a statement which, amongother things, confirms that you accept theSchool’s rules about the minimum numberof credits required and exam proceduresand that you, at all times, will act as agood ambassador of SSE. A copy of thisagreement is enclosed in the SSE AcademicPolicies for your reference.A more detailed schedule will be sent to youin August.4


SSE ACADEMICSTRUCTUREAll educational programs at the StockholmSchool of Economics are based on researchand stress a theoretical and analyticalapproach. The teaching methodology is amixture of American and European teachingmethods and theories. Some modulesare characterized by more traditionalteaching, with lectures, written courseassignments and seminars. In other theteaching is to a great extent based on cases;active participation in class is expected andcontributes to the final grade. Many of thecourse modules require substantial preparatoryreading.As an SSE Master student, you will bepart of a student body of about 1700 activestudents. You may find that the structureof examination differs from what you areused to. SSE exams will put great emphasison not only understanding the materialfrom the respective module, but also beingable to connect and integrate learningacross different topics. Exams are writtenor oral.SSE ACADEMIC YEARThe SSE academic year consists of twosemesters, fall (August –December) andspring ( January– June), each worth 30 ECTScredits. In order to complete the programyou will have to take a total number of 120ECTS credits.8 9


SERVICES OFFEREDSTUDENT SERVICESStudying at SSE can be rather intenseand it is important that all the practicalitiessurrounding your study situation areworking smoothly. The Student Servicesdepartment handles services and functionswhich will be of assistance duringyour studies. We have professional studentcounselors and we will assist you with formalgrade transcripts, we deal with studenthealth issues and offer you career servicesetc. SSE takes a sincere interest in the students’well-being and integrity, and you arealways welcome to contact the Student Servicesfor any reason. The School has a verystrict policy concerning harassments of allkind, and there are disciplinary measuresfor violations.housing serv icesFinding accommodation in Stockholm isvery difficult, and if you are looking forhousing we recommend that you immediatelyregister with SSSB: www.sssb.se/index.php?page=home_engSSSB is a foundation that manages themajority of student accommodation inStockholm. Expect the process of findingaccommodation to take 2–4 months. Registeringwith SSSB is free, but unless you login once every three months you will bederegistered. The cost for SSSB accommodationvaries depending on size, facilitiesand location but expect to pay around SEK3000 for a single room with shared kitchenfacilities.The Student Association at SSE mediatesa limited number of second hand contractsand lodging opportunities. They can alsohelp you with information, shorter translationsand general advice.Please contact their representativeMaria Johard at 21122@student.hhs.seSSE provides a limited number of roomsand apartments that are available primarilyfor international exchange students.Available accommodation is distributedthroughout June and July and is normallylet for one semester. ca r eer serv icesThe SSE Career Services assists studentsin entering the job market and supportthem in the process of choosing a career.We offer the following services: counselingand advising, skills seminars, access to theVault Online Library and an annual PlacementReport (an employment survey ofSSE graduates).Individual counseling sessions assist studentsin defining career alternatives andchoosing a career and teach them jobsearchstrategies. You are welcome to signup for an individual session to talk aboutyour career plans.Through the Career Services website youhave access to the Vault Online Librarythat includes company and industry guides,among others. The Career Serviceshas a separate shelf in the SSE Librarywhere you will find career managementbooks.The SSE Career Services works in closecooperation with the Business Committeeof the Student Association. Company presentationsare offered on a weekly basis,and the SSE Business Forum (Career Days)take place in the beginning of februaryevery year. Please note that you need tobe a member of the Student Association totake part in their recruitment services.PC SUPPORTPC Support will assist you with everythingconnected to the student computer environmentat SSE, logging on, passwords,printing, solving technical problems withSSE computers, as well as with connectingyour own lap-top to the SSE wireless network.The wireless system also works at“Studentpalatset” (student facility not farfrom SSE). At Saltmätargaran 13–17 youhave access to five computer labs with atotal of 90 computers as well as printers,CD-burners and scanners. You will alsofind computers in the library and a lap-toproom. For a quick look at your schedule oryour e-mail you can always use the browserterminals at SSE. MAPLIBRARYThe SSE library functions as the principalinformation resource for students, researchersand staff within the fields of businessand economics, and it also has supplementaryholdings in law, statistics and thesocial sciences.The selection of the printed and digital collectionsis made out in cooperation withSSE researchers. The library offers accessto over 15,000 electronic journals and morethan 60 databases as well as 4,500 metersof shelf space containing printed materials.The library is open Monday to Friday12.00–17.00. An access card is requiredin the mornings until 12:00, in the evenings17:00–20:00, and during weekends12:00–16:00. <strong>FOR</strong> INTERNATIONAL<strong>STUDENTS</strong>Moving to another country to pursue studies is a major undertaking. Below you will findsome information which may be valuable when moving to Sweden. More comprehensiveinformation and a list of valuable links can be found at the SSE web site www.hhs.se/Education/NewStudent2009RESIDENCE PERMITSStudents from countries outside of the EU/EEA need a residence permit to study inSweden. You must have this before comingto Sweden. Students who need a residencepermit are advised to apply as soon as theyreceive the notification of admission sinceit is important to have sufficient time toapply for your residence permit before thesemester starts. Students from EU/EEAcountries do not need a residence permitbefore arriving. However, if you are studyingfor more than three months you mustregister with the Swedish migration boardno later than three months after yourarrival. Visit www.migrationsverket.se foradditional information.SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER(PERSONNUMMER)Having a “personnummer” is often the keyto Sweden. With a social security numberit will be easier to open bank accounts,open a telephone subscription etc. (In Swedenthe social security number is called“personnummer”). Application for civilregistration – must be made at your localtax office. Bring your passport, a letter ofacceptance from your department/educationalinstitution or Högskoleverket, and, ifyou are married, your marriage certificate.Visit the local tax office in person. Consultwww.skatteverket.se for visiting address andopening hours.INSURANCE COVERAGE ANDMEDICAL CAREIf you are a citizen of any of the Nordic orEU/EEA countries, you have access topublic medical services if you register inadvance at a social insurance office in yourhome country and obtain a Europeanhealth insurance card. If you are a studentfrom outside the EU/EEA countries stayingin Sweden for more than one year – i.e.if you have a residence permit valid for oneyear or more – you are entitled to the samehealth benefits as Swedes. GENERALIN<strong>FOR</strong>MATIONACCESS CARDS & SECURITYSSE is located in the middle of Stockholm,which brings closeness to a wide variety ofcultural events, sports, shopping, leisureactivities, etc. This also means that securityprocedures must be observed. Every SSEstudent will be able to purchase an accesscard. The card is personal and must not belent to anyone else. It can be used in thefollowing card readers: the main entranceon Sveavägen 65, the door to the right atthe top of the stairs in the lobby of the mainbuilding, the entrance at the short side ofthe main building (Kopparporten), the PC-Labs, the library during internal openinghours, and to the entrance to Saltmätargatan13–17.cards will be sold during lunch hour,week 36 (august 31 to september 4) in rooma137 for sek 100:–. please note that wewill only be able to accept cash.ALUMNIAs an alumnus from SSE you will be partof a unique worldwide network of some13,000 professionals active in various fieldsof business.The SSE fellow alumni around the worldform a vast global community.
