There has been some discussionin the neighborhood lately regarding CP’s plans for the8th Street Rail Crossing. At September’s general meeting,an Inglewood resident made claims of a promise by CP toInglewood that the crossing would remain open permanently.CAC subsequently contacted the Inglewood developmentchair, Alderman Joe Ceci and City Transportation directorMac Logan and none can recall any meetings with CPRor provide documentation to substantiate the claim madeby the Inglewood resident. The only information we havereceived from CP is “CP has a corporate understanding thatthe SE LRT may be 5 years out from 2010, … the crossingwould have to be closed at this point if it was not closedbefore…” They have also stated CP is undertaking a NorthAmerica wide level crossing review in 2010 with the intentof closing crossings having significant safety or operationalissues. We understand that it is CP’s practice to deal directlywith the municipality’s road authority (‘The City’) inmatters such as this; however, we feel strongly that Ramsayneeds to be included considering we are most affected bythe 8th Street crossing. Meetings could start as soon as early2011; stay tuned for future developments. The Civic Affairs Committee welcomes new members.Contact the Chairman at vpexternal@ramsaycommunity.ab.ca for details of the Civic Affairs Terms of Reference,Volunteer Code of Conduct and reading list of planningdocuments of record. They havebeen down to the Elbow on a romp looking for beavers. Didyou know Otters rely heavily on beavers for shelter. This kindof fits that now our “5-7 year olds boys and girls” group areno longer called Beavers but Otters. I have got the word fromthe parents that they want to see their kids outside more soguess who is back down to the Elbow floating boats this week?Well they are otters and otters like to play in the water. Howmany kids and parents are going to end up wet? Stay tunedfor the adventures of the soggy bottom gang! The leaders havea planning session coming up so we just have to wait and seewhat wild and crazy things are coming. Q: Why is snow removal so important?A: Snow that remains on sidewalks is a hazard to:• Persons who have limited mobility and are at risk for falls.Persons such as older adults or those who have disabilitiesmay suffer severe injuries in a fall on ice and/or snow. A fallon an icy walk could lead to an injury that would preventreturn to one’s home.• Persons whose jobs require them to walk from house tohouse or who make home deliveries. Such persons delivermail, read water/gas meters, voluntarily deliver for Meals-On-Wheels and visit those who are unable to get out. What is Aging In Place?Carla Berezowski, CAPS (Certified Aging In Place Specialist)Aging In Place is the ability to remain living in the home ofyour choice independently, safely and comfortably regardless ofyour age or ability.Aging In Place is based on Universal Design principleswhich basically state that anyone can live safely in a spacedesigned using these principles, regardless of age or ability. The space is user-friendly for all, easy to maneuver around ifyou are in a wheelchair or if your arms are full with kids andgroceries. The changes required to enable you to stay in your homemay be minor ones like replacing door knobs with lever handles, installing D-shaped cabinet pulls and removing trippinghazards like area carpets.Other changes could be a bit more in depth such as upgradinglight fixtures, changing flooring, moving switches and outletsfor easier access or changing cabinets to accommodate slideout shelves and drawers. Then there are major renovations such as building a masterbedroom on the main floor, renovating a bathroom shower tomake it wheelchair accessible or widening halls and doorways. There are many different options to make your home safeand comfortable for you, your parents, or someone else youlove for years to come. Many modifications are simple andinexpensive; it just takes a little bit of creativity and understandingthe needs of the client to find solutions. In Calgary, 9.4% of the population is over 65 years old(StatCan2009). Of these, 90% live in their own home. Thatmeans there are just fewer than 100,000 people who are agingin their homes. Further, these homes tend to be older, datafrom the 2006 census indicates that over 40% of seniors livingin their own homes which were built prior to 1971. Thesehomes tend to have poor lighting, narrow doors and hallways, smaller rooms and no considerations at all for ease of maneuverabilitythroughout the home.Aging In Place Calgary wants to educate as many people aspossible about the opportunities and independence that ourknowledge and understanding of universal design offers. Insome cases people do have to move out and into an assistedliving or long-term care situation. However, a much larger percentageof the population is able to live in their homes for theduration of their lives – they just need a few modifications toensure it is safe.Ramsay News page 11

Your Ramsay NeighbourSam Hester has lived in Ramsay since 2004 and has seen a lotof changes in her house and her life since then. Her relativelynew boyfriend of the time, Scott, has become her husband, and a room upstairs in her 1911 home now accommodates atoddler. Wiring has been updated, new floors have been putdown, and a brand new shower stall means that she no longerneeds to crouch down in the bath under the eave of the houseto wash. Despite the changes, Sam is still the artistic free spiritI’ve known since elementary school.Sam was born in Toronto but moved to Calgary when shewas small and grew up in the city. When she graduated highschool at just 16, she spent a year as a Rotary exchange studentin Germany, followed by a year at the University of Calgary. She then lived in Toronto for a number of years, where shefollowed in her father’s footsteps to graduate from U of T, andspent a year at Ontario College of Art. She found herself leavingthe hipster circles of arty Toronto to take a job as a flightattendant for Air Canada, and for the last twelve years hasbeen making the regular journey from Calgary to Frankfurt.Sam greatly appreciates the flexibility of this route and her job, allowing her time to be an artist. One of her two main art forms is portrait painting. In herkitchen she displays eight pieces of a 19-portrait series, “TheBrothers,” (all musician friends of her younger brother MattMasters), which had its opening at ArtPoint in 2004. Downthe hall is a self-portrait that was a Top Finalist in the PortraitSociety of Canada’s 2006 International Portrait Art Festival. The walls and ceilings in the rest of her house are painted inbold colours, in mosaic style in some places and with brightsuns shining in others. Her other art form is indie comics, which combines her love of writing with illustration. A trip tothe San Diego Comic Con led her to meet some independentcomics publishers, and through those connections one of herillustrated stories has appeared in a junior high textbook. Hercomics are autobiographical, chroniclingthe adventures she has had (such as followingBob Dylan around the world tosee concerts in Japan, across Europe, andall over the USA) and the people shemeets along the way.Sam is fascinated with what she calls“teenager books.” She finds them to haveriveting plots intended to engage theyoung reader but that can be enjoyed byadults too. She likes illustrated storiesand books for this age group becausethey’re not quite for kids, not quite forgrown-ups. She says, “I think I just likean art form that defies a boundary ofsome kind.” She has done academic writingon the genre and once had to turndown the opportunity to do a Master’sdegree in Creative Writing in NewZealand. She would like to have the chance to pursue analyzingliterature again someday. For now though, she is enjoying taking care of her almosttwo-year-oldson and day-to-day life with Scott. She lovesRamsay for the friends she’s made in the 23rd Avenue Cluband the fantastic experience she had as part of the artists’ collectiveat ArtPoint. She and I both can’t believe she has madeher home near the bottom of the hill at Ramsay school, whereas kids she and I would come to a screeching halt after a terrifyingride on my toboggan.RAMSAY RESIDENTSSHARE YOUR NEWS• Musicians, artists, performers – let us know whenand where to catch you & see your work.• Enthusiasts – let us know about your initiatives.Email us at news@ramsaycommunity.ab.ca by the 15thof each month.Ramsay News page 14
