Catarawan, Piat, CagayanCooperator: Marcial BalmoresFish Cage Construction and ManagementAfter its separate introduction of 45-days delayedfeeding and polyculture technologies in various partsof Cagayan Valley, BFAR RO2 has shown that bothcan be combined following successful result of itsdemo project in the municipality of Piat, provinceof Cagayan.Following recommended stocking rate andcombination on polyculture, the 1,520 square meterfishpond owned by Balmores was stocked with 6,080pieces size 22 tilapia (80%), and 380 common carp(5%) last March 20. The remaining 15% or 1,140pieces hito fingerlings were stocked two monthslater, or exactly halfway in the culture period to avoidpossible predation.Stocking rate is 5 pieces fingerlings per squaremeter.Likewise, following protocol on 45-days delayedfeeding technology, introduction of artificial feedscame one-and-a-half-month into the 4-monthculture period.Polyculture takes advantage of stratified feedinghabit of the stocks being cultured such that directfeed competition is eliminated and maximumutilization of pond resources is ensured. Likewise,a key to the success of this project is the symbioticrelationship of the cultured species. The carp,being pond bottom feeders and dwellers helpedmaintain water quality by eating excess feeds andother detritus. The hito meanwhile, preventedovercrowding and unnecessary feed and oxygencompetition by feeding on fry or offspring of thetilapia.Delayed feeding technology meanwhile dependson the propagation of plankton to serve as naturalfood for the fingerlings during the early stage ofculture period. This is done by applying chickenmanure at rate of 1 to 2 tons per hectare for basalfertilization and its maintenance using 16-20-0(ammonium phosphate) inorganic fertilizer at rateof 100 kilograms per hectare thru tea bag method.13
