Samba File Sharing 315If you know the name of the server you want to connect to, you can connect to it directlyand create a shortcut on the desktop. This is also useful for servers that are configured tonot be visible and thus don’t appear when you browse the network. Select Places,Connect to Server from the desktop menu. Then select Windows share as the Servicetype, and enter the name of the server as shown in Figure 13.9.13FIGURE 13.9Connecting Directly to a Samba ShareUnder the Optional information section, the following can be configured:. Share: The name of the Samba share.. Folder: The folder to open inside the Samba share.. User Name: The username to use for authentication when connecting. If a usernameis not provided, the connection is made with the guest account if it isenabled, which usually has limited permissions.. Name to use for the connection: Connection name to use when labeling thetemporary mount point in the Places menu and on the desktop.An icon will appear on the desktop using the name of the server or, if provided, the namein the Name To Use For The Connection field. A shortcut is also listed under the Placesmenu item in the desktop menu.NOTETo unmount the share, right-click on its desktop icon and select Unmount Volume. Ifthe share is not unmounted, it will remain in the Places menu on reboot, but you mustreauthenticate to access the share after rebooting.Connecting with smbclientThe smbclient command provides an FTP-like interface to the server. It is provided by thesamba-client package. Install it via RHN if not already installed.
