308CHAPTER 13Network File Sharing. Share: Samba users can browse the shared directories without having to entera username and password combination. They are only prompted for a usernameand password when they attempt to connect to a specific shared directoryfrom a Samba server.. User: (Default) Samba users must provide a valid username and password on aper-Samba-server basis. Select this option if you want the Windows Usernameoption to work.. Authentication Server: Used in conjunction with the Domain and Server authenticationmodes.. Kerberos Realm: Used in combination with the ADS authentication mode. It mustbe in all uppercase letters, such as EXAMPLE.COM.. Encrypt Passwords: Set to yes by default. If set to no, passwords are sent over thenetwork in plain text and can be intercepted by a simple packet sniffer. It is highlyrecommended not to change this setting.. Guest Account: To configure the server to allow a guest account to connect, select asystem user from the pull-down menu. When a guest connects to the server, theguest user will be mapped to this system user with all the permissions the systemuser has.Click OK to save the settings. The settings take place immediately: If the service is notstarted, clicking OK starts it. If the service is already started, clicking OK forces a reload ofthe configuration file.Adding Samba UsersAfter configuring the server settings, the next step is to configure the Samba users. If theauthentication type is set to user, access to Samba shares are allowed by a username andpassword combination. These users must be configured as Samba users. Each Samba usermaps to an existing user on the Samba server, so a user account must exist for each Sambauser added before adding the Samba user in this graphical program. Refer to Chapter 9,“Managing Users and Groups,” for more information on adding system users. To add Samba users, select Preferences, Samba Users from the pull-down menu. ClickAdd User and provide the following:. Unix Username: The existing user to map the Samba user to.. Windows Username: The username to be used for Samba authentication. Thisoption is useful if the user already has an account on the Windows system connectingto the server, but the username on the Windows system is different from theusername on the Linux Samba server. For this to work, the Authentication Mode onthe Security tab of the Server Settings preferences must be set to User.. Samba Password: A password for the Samba user to be used for Samba authentication. For higher security, this should be different from the user’s system password.. Confirm Samba Password: Enter the password again to make sure it is recordedwithout typos.
