542APPENDIX BCreating Virtual MachinesFIGURE B.14Guest OS Running in the VM ConsoleTIPTo have the VM console opened automatically if the Virtual Machine Manager isalready running when you execute the xm create -c command, select Edit,Preferences from the Virtual Machine Manager window. For the Automatically openconsoles option, select For all domains. Click Close to enable the change immediately. If the shutdown request is given to the guest OS from inside the guest OS such as byselecting it from the menus or executing the shutdown command, the guest OS shuts itselfdown properly, and then the VM is stopped as well. If a reboot request is given from theguest OS (other than during the installation process), it behaves as expected—the guestOS reboots, keeping the VM active.Alternatively, click the Shutdown button on the toolbar of the Virtual Machine Managerwindow containing the graphical desktop for the VM. The guest OS and VM can also beshut down by executing the following command as root at a shell prompt, where is the unique name for the domain:virsh shutdown The command returns after sending the shutdown action. To verify that the shutdownhas been completed, either execute the virsh list command and make sure the domainis not in the list or watch the Virtual Machine Manager domain list until the domain isremoved from the list.
