Setting Up the VM and Installing the Guest OS 537. Memory and CPU allocation: Select the maximum amount of memory the VM hasaccess to on the host system as shown in Figure B.9. If a smaller amount of startupmemory is selected, the amount of startup memory is dedicated to the VM when itis started instead of the entire maximum amount of memory allowed. If morememory is needed by the VM later, the host system can allocate more memory to itup to the maximum amount configured.Select the number of virtual processors the VM should have as well. The VM cannothave more virtual processors than the host has physical processor cores. It is recommendedthat the VM have no more than one less virtual processor than the hosthas physical processor cores.FIGURE B.9System Resource AllocationBAfter reviewing the summary of the settings selected, click Finish to create the VM andshow the virtual console through which the installation will occur. The configuration file/etc/xen/ is created. If the disk image doesn’t exist, it is created as well. If youreceive an error message that the domain can’t be created, look in the /var/log/xen/xend-debug.log file for error messages or tracebacks. For example, the following messagemeans that the host system does not have enough physical memory to allocate tothe VM:VmError: I need 262144 KiB, but dom0_min_mem is 262144 and shrinking to262144 KiB would leave only 243968 KiB free.If the host system is successful in creating the VM, a virtual console for the newly createdVM appears. The new domain name appears in the domain list in the Virtual MachineManager window. If you provided a kickstart file instead of a network installation tree, the contents of the Virtual Machine Manager window will show the OS being installedvia kickstart instead. For a para-virtualized host, the installation starts with the languageselection screen in Figure B.10.
