Installing the nVidia Display Driver 527Use the following steps to install the display driver from http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_amd64_1.0-9746.html:NOTEThe driver does not currently work with the Virtualization kernel. Be sure you arenot running the Virtualization kernel before continuing. Refer to Appendix B fordetails on Virtualization.1. Read the NVIDIA software license and be sure you agree to it before proceeding.Note that it is not GPL-compatible. A link to the license is on the download page.2. Before downloading the driver, install the kernel-devel, xorg-x11-server-sdk, andgcc RPM packages so that the precompiled kernel interface can be found orcompiled. The kernel-devel package is specific to the kernel version running, so besure to install the correct version. If you use the following command to downloadand install from RHN, the proper version is installed:yum install kernel-devel xorg-x11-server-sdk gcc3. Download the installation script from the nVidia website, NVIDIA-<strong>Linux</strong>-x86_64-1.0-9746-pkg2.run.4. You cannot be running the X server (the graphical desktop or login screen) wheninstalling the driver. Log out of the graphical desktop if you are logged in so thatyou are at the graphical login screen. Press the key combination Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go tothe first virtual terminal. Log in as the root user and execute the command init 3to completely stop the X server.5. As root, run the installation script to start the installation process (specify the fullpath to the script if you are not in the same directory):Ash NVIDIA-<strong>Linux</strong>-x86_64-1.0-9746-pkg2.run6. A simple text-based interface is used during the installation process. Accept thelicense to continue.7. A message is displayed stating that no precompiled kernel interface was found tomatch the kernel. You can choose to download it from the nVidia FTP site.8. If you choose to download it but it can’t be found or you choose not to downloadit, the next step shows the kernel interface being compiled.9. Answer Yes to the question asking whether to install the NVIDIA 32-bit compatibilityOpenGL libraries. The interfaces shows the progress as it searches for conflictingOpenGL files and then installs the driver.10. After driver installation is complete, you are asked whether you want the nvidiaxconfigutility run to configure the X server configuration file so that the nVidiadriver is used the next time X is started. Choose Yes to this question to configurethe /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. The old file is saved as /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup.11. Finally, select OK to exit the installation program.
