| FeatureStatman:State Athletes HaveHutzler To Thank ForRecords RecognitionBy SCOTT KINDBERGskindberg@post-journal.comAt some point in the next threemonths, it's likely that a high school footballplayer in New York will either run, pass, kick, punt or intercept his way intothe voluminous state record book.Already residing on its pages on the NewYork State Sportswriters Association websiteare familiar local names JehuuCaulcrick, Aaron Leeper, Josh Liddell,Larry Croft, Travis Maxwell and ChrisSecky, among many others. But those names don't just appear magically.First, someone has to compile thestats during and after each game and thentotal it all up at season's end. After that, the real work begins — piecing it alltogether from all corners of the state, payingparticular attentionthat no figurativestone is left unturned.Accuracy and attentionto detail is a must. That is when PaulHutzler is at his best. The 74-year-old fromCheektowaga spentmore than 30 yearsworking two jobs —postal worker andschool bus driver —but his true passion istracking stats from theshores of ChautauquaLake to the tip of"If you're goingto do the job, youhavetodoitright, get all theinformation youcan and be precise. You have tolove it and youhave to be totallydevoted."Long Island. And, it's safe to say, nobody has done it better. And, certainly, no onehas done it longer.Paul was a freshman atSt. Joseph's CollegiateInstitute in Buffalo thefirst time he begancrunching numbers. The year was 1951.———Paul and Brenda Hutzler'shouse sits on Randy Way, thirdhouse from the left at the end of the quietstreet. They've called it home for fourdecades. The mailmen who have made deliveriesthere over the years know the residencewell, too.In addition to the usual letters and packages, the U.S. postal workers have delivered— before the advent of the Internet—asmanyas10newspapersadaytotheHutzlers' doorstep, including The <strong>Post</strong>-<strong>Journal</strong> and The (Dunkirk) Observer, allin the name of chronicling the statisticalaccomplishments of high school athletesfrom throughout New York State, including,of course Western New York.➝ (continued on page 5)4 GRIDIRON, AUGUST 30, 2012

Thescores were 31-14 in the regular season and30-10 in the Section 6 title game at RalphWilson Stadium. It was the Red Raiders' first appearance at"The Ralph" in 11 years."It solidified the thought that we're at thetop of the Double A's," coach Tom Langworthysaid about ending the drought. "Wemade it down to the final two and one ofour goals is to get back there and we'd liketo win a sectional championship."<strong>Jamestown</strong> reached that title game with animpressive semifinal road win at KenmoreWest, the top seed from Class AA North. The teams were tied 7-7 at halftime, but the<strong>Jamestown</strong> quarterback Dennis Drew6 GRIDIRON, AUGUST 30, 2012

Red Raiders exploded for three touchdownsin less than 3½ minutes early in thesecond half.In the quarterfinals at Strider Field,<strong>Jamestown</strong> dodged a bullet with a 10-6win over Lockport for its sixth straight winafter a loss at Orchard Park in the secondweek of the season. The Red Raiders were 6-1 in the regularseason and 4-1 in Class AA South to claimsecond place. They were also a perfect 5-0at home.KEY PLAYERS LOST:Spencer DeCinque, who led the team inrushing with 1,340 yards and touchdownswith 13. He was also 37 for 47 on extrapointattempts and a perfect 7 for 7 infield goals, which included a four in a winover Clarence, which is tied for third instate history.Ben Whitney led the team in tackles with108 and was the co-leader in sacks withseven. J.B. Maisonet had 73 tackles, sixsacks and led the team with four blockedpunt.Jake Dwaileebe led in interceptions withfour and was the leading receiver with 38catches for 563 yards. Jacob Gullo was aco-leader in sacks with seven. Also gone are Terrance DeJesus (50 tackles),Adam Sundholm (57 tackles) andlinemen Kyle Marsh, Tom D'Angelo andNolan O'Boyle.KEY RETURNEES:Quarterback Dennis Drew (74 for 126,958 yards and eight touchdowns), enddefensiveback Zach Panebianco (24 tackles, three interceptions), tackle JohnCzech (67 tackles), lineman CortlandHaines (73 tackles), end-linebacker MikeWatson (44 tackles), end-linebacker ConnorAnderson (33 tackles) and runningback Da’Quan Hollingsworth.OUTLOOK FOR 2012:"The team is definitely different from lastyear. We lost a lost of guys, we have someguys coming back. We have more somemore depth this year than we've ever had."I think it will be a physical and hard-hittingteam again. That's the brand of footballwe've been known for and we takepride in that. We're going to hit you andwe're going to play a very clean game. Ithink we'll be very competitive."The return to the Section 6 title gameafter 11 years was a major plus in 2011."I builds a lot of momentum," Langworthysaid. "The guys know how close they were.We hung right in there with the statechamps on two different occasions."He added, "Now we have to take it to thenext level and not only get to the stadium, but once we get there win a sectionalchampionship."OUTLOOK FOR CLASS AA SOUTH:"It will be extremely tough again, likeevery year. I think Orchard Park will havea good team again. Clarence is extremelywell-coached and has good players. Frontierhad a jayvee team last year that didn'tlose and West Seneca West is getting better.Lancaster has a brand new coach. LenJankiewicz was a tremendous coach andone of his assistants (Chris Dickson) hastaken the reins and I'm sure is going to tryto continue the tradition that Lenny had. It's going to be a battle every week like it isevery year."KEY GAME OF SEASON:"The key game is the next one, which isthe opener (against Kenmore West). Inweek two we'll play Niagara Falls andthough it is a non-league game I thinkthey'll be one of the top teams if not thetop team coming out of the north. Thatwill be a good measuring stick to seewhere we're at. Then we open our leagueseason in Week Three up at Lancaster, which is always a difficult place to play. Ithink those three games are crucial to usbecause that sets the tone for our season."<strong>Jamestown</strong> receivers: Front from left Connor Anderson, Zach Panebianco, Brian Park.Back: Josh Colwell, Ben Larson, Steven Carlson, Harrison Tyra.TIRED OF HIGH HEATING BILLS?of Erie, PACustom-Built Replacement Windowsand Doors Will Help!Installed by our experienced staff.D&S GLASS SERVICE333 Fluvanna Ave., <strong>Jamestown</strong> • 664-9321(across from Arby’s)www.dsglass.comFree In-Home EstimatesGRIDIRON, AUGUST 30, 2012 7

"Theend of the season, the ball just didn't bounceour way and it's really as simple as that. If itdoes, we're one game away from the stadium. It was one of those years where we had someinjuries, things didn't go our way and wetalked to the kids about how that was a part oflife and how you react to that kind of stuff ishow you're going to react to it later in life. And those guys, they responded pretty welland they never quit. They had a big team lastyear, they've got a nice staff and theirprogram is going in the right direction.Cattaraugus-Little Valley's coming down. They know all of us. They used to be inour league and there's no easy game. I-Prep probably has more potential thanany of us, so who knows?"We take it one day at a time and oneweek at a time," Helmer said. "But we'reconfident. Our kids are going to work forMaple Grove to start and then Randolphand follow the schedule from there. AndI think that's how we have to prepare. Ifwe keep things moving forward and inthe right direction, we've got a goodshot."KEY GAME OF SEASON:"It's our opener," Helmer said. "I alwaysthink it's our opener, even if it's a nonleaguecontest. Southwestern lost thatgame, 39-0, to Dobbs Ferry, but the run itmade to get to that point won’t soon beforgotten.“It’s cliché for coaches to say but we trulydid get better every week,’’ Sirianni said.“We lost to an outstanding team in DobbsFerry in the final but that didn’t diminishanything we did up until that point.’’The Trojans, who finished 5-1 in Class CSouth and 11-2 overall, started theirimprobable postseason run with a 41-14 Southwestern quarterback: Jake Pilling32 GRIDIRON, AUGUST 30, 2012

victory over JFK in the quarterfinals andthey followed that with a thrilling, 27-24,overtime win against Fredonia in thesemifinals. A 10-0 win over ClevelandHill gave them the sectional title andthey kept going from there, beatingWellsville, 23-6, and Waverly, 19-13, toget into the finals. It was a string of victories perhaps noone would have predicted following thatloss a couple months prior.“We didn’t see that coming but our kids, some of them had played in that (championship)game two years prior andknew how those teams worked,’’ Siriannisaid. “And they got hot at the right time.It was a fun year. It was very little pressure. It was just go out and play. Thatteam overachieved, I guess you couldsay, but they earned the right to play fora state championship.’’KEY PLAYERS LOST:After a stellar career, Jake Swan, whoplayed almost every position at one timeor another, was lost to graduation, as waslinebacker Tyler Uber, running back anddefensive end Dan Petruccello, offensiveand defensive lineman Dan Austin andoffensive lineman Rob Newell.“The losses, there was talent there but itwas more about leadership,’’ Siriannisaid. “The seniors last year provided uswith tremendous leadership and that’sgoing to be the hardest thing to replace. The new seniors coming up need to takecontrol because it’s their team. WithSwan, his career was unbelievable atSouthwestern, but the leadership that welost is going to be the toughest thing toovercome.’’KEY RETURNEES:The cupboards certainly are not bare atSouthwestern.First-team all-state offensive linemanPete Trathen is back, along with quarterbackJake Pilling, wide receiver/defensiveback Ryan Schutte, linebackers MattMartin and Jesia Hogue, and kickerfirst-team all-state kicker Tanner Hoose.Juniors Kyle Moran (offensive anddefensive line) and Kevin Bellardo (runningback) also return.“Those guys have played in 13 varsityfootball games so that gives us a lot ofexperience in that regard,’’ Sirianni said.“Most kids only play in 16 or 17 gamesin their high school career. That definitelyhelps. They played in some biggames but we’ll see how the leadershipis. We’re anxious to see how these kidstake control of this team and lead.’’OUTLOOK FOR 2012:The Trojans will be looking for theirfifth straight trip to the sectional championshipgame at Ralph Wilson Stadium.Sirianni, however, is not lookingthat far ahead.“Just like everybody else, we’re just tryingto get better during the preseasonand get ready for the first game,’’ Siriannisaid. “We’ll see how it goes. There’s been a lot of change inthe offseason. We have more kids out, we have newcoaches, we’re doing things a lot differently. It willbe more like what we did in the past. Last year isjust a good year to leave behind.’’The Golden Falcons’ two wins in their 2-6 seasoncame against Lafayette.Krenzer took over for Mike Ginestre, who went 6-19 in three seasons, in the offseason and hopes toget Falconer back to where it was during Krenzer’sfirst stint as varsity head coach.“We have a lot of work to do,’’ Krenzer said.“There has been a lot that has happened in thelast four years. The kids have respondedwell, they just have a lot to learn.’’OUTLOOK FOR 2012:First and foremost, Krenzer is lookingfor improvement.“I’m optimistic,’’ Krenzer said. “I don’tknow where the season will end up butI do know when you start at the bottomthere’s only one way to go. We’re goingto see how much these kids can learnand how fast they can learn it and we’llsee what we can do. I don’t know wherethis team is going to end up but I amoptimistic that we can do better thanwe have in the past couple years.’’The changes Krenzer is trying to maketo the program will take time but, hesaid, so far, so good.“It’s going well,’’ Krenzer said. “Thekids are working hard. I can’t say thatour team has veterans because how Icoach is much different than thecoaches in the past. I knew it was goingto be that way and we’re going to haveto work through that. It’s been a reallearning curve for a lot of the kids anda lot of work as coaches to get ourexpectations across to the kids.“I think the kids are excited and Ithink they’re glad I’m here. I’m glad tobe here for them. I think they’re readyfor a change.’’OUTLOOK FOR CLASS C SOUTH:“There’s always Southwestern,’’ Krenzersaid. “They’re state championshipcaliberevery year. "We did not haveall of our starters togetherdue to injuries. Slowlybut surely they came backand the last three or fourgames of the year westarted playing well, especially on defense."Bodimer was particularlyencouraged with how theteam played in the sectionalfinal. ChautauquaLake distinguished itselfas the class of the leaguethroughout the season, but the Thunderbirdshands full against Clymer, needing turnoversto set up each of theirtwo touchdowns."We ended on a high noteplaying against ChautauquaLake," Bodamersaid. how well we played against them. It was agood end to the year."Now he would like to see that strong finishcarry over to a strong start to this season."It would be great if we could start offwhere we ended," Bodamer said. "If wecould maintain that momentum thatwould be a great way to start the year."KEY PLAYERS LOST:Tailback Ryan Phelps will be a big lossfor Clymer following a season in whichhe rushed for about 1,200 yards andscored 18 touchdowns, providing a bigchunk of the Pirates' offense. Phelps alsolined up at middle linebacker ondefense.Quarterback Justin White was also lost tograduation."We don't throw the ball a ton but youstill need to be able to when you have to,"Bodamer said. "Justin was very good atscrambling; when things broke down hewas at his best."KEY RETURNEES:First-team All-State defensive linemanDan Lictus will be back for his senior season."He's the one kid that teams are going tothink of first when they game-plan forus," Bodamer said.Several other seniors also return, includingfullback/middle linebacker Tom Heiser, lineman Caleb Clark, fullback/tightend Connor Payne and linemen AustinCramer and Rich Resta.Junior Jake Wiggers got a decent amountof carries at tailback last year behindPhelps and will get an increased workloadthis season. In all, six starters on both sides of theball return for the Pirates.OUTLOOK FOR 2012:This season marks the first in 10 yearsthat Heiser won't be on the sidelines, asthe former coach chose to step down sohe could enjoy his son's senior year.Bodamer, the jayvee defensive coach anda varsity assistant last year, takes over andhopes to see his team pick up where itleft off over the second half of last season."It would be great to make a return tripto the stadium but we'll have to play prettywell to do that. They're definitelygoing to have to earn it," Bodamer said."That's one thing about the DD bracketwe're in, you have to show up to playevery week. I would just like to see themcompete at a high level every week. That's the biggest thing."OUTLOOK FOR CLASS DD:The battle for the league title reallyopened up with Chautauqua Lake's moveto Class D. Panama finished in secondplace last year and figures to be amongthe favorites this year, but Sherman, Clymerand Ellicottville were all rightbehind the Panthers a year ago."I think there are a lot of teams in DDthat could end up in the top two,"Bodamer said. "I think we'll be competitive."Our numbers are down this year. A lot ofschools, their overall numbers are down. You've got to stay healthy. There are a lotof things you can't control that you haveto hope go your way. I just want us to becompetitive. I think we can be and itwould be a real letdown if we're not."As for the rest of the division, "I have noclue," he said. "Until about the fifth weekof the season it could be a tossup, like itwas last year."KEY GAME OF THE SEASON:"Week One," Bodamer said, referring tothe rivalry game at Sherman on Saturday."We are really telling the kids one week ata time. That is something I've beenstressing and when Week One is againstone of your nearest rivals and you've lostto them a couple years in a row, you'd bereally foolish to look past that game."That's going to be a good test to find outwhere we're at and where we have to go."Clymer jr backfield: Garrett McAfoose, Matt DeStevens, Jake Wiggers800-723-9213LICTUS OIL & PROPANEYOUR COMPLETE PROPANEHEADQUARTERS• QUALITY PRODUCTS• GREAT SERVICE• FRIENDLY STAFF• SEE OUR NEW SHOWROOM IN CLYMER!!!!GOOD LUCK PIRATES!GRIDIRON, AUGUST 30, 2012 49

It will be no different for Westfield asit moves on from a number of players whohelped the Wolverines to the playoffs last season.“We lost four or five players who had startedsince they were sophomores,” coach Bob Northsaid. “We are losing Trey North who was ourstarting quarterback and safety as well as MasonSamonia who started on both sides of the lines.”Brent Morrison took snaps at both fullback anddefensive end while Cody Merrill played on bothWestfield quarterbacks: Nolan Hunt and Dylan MacCubbin54 GRIDIRON, AUGUST 30, 2012

sides of the line.“We probably lost half of our starters onboth sides of the ball,” North said. “Wewill also miss Austin Alonge who playedslot receiver and linebacker while AnthonyLeone also saw snaps at receiver andcornerback for us.”KEY RETURNEES:While Westfield may have lost half of itsstarters, that means the Wolverines willalso be returning half of their starterswho will look to take advantage of theopportunity ahead of them.“Mike Okerlund was someone whoplayed both sides of the ball and ranreally hard for us at tailback,” Northsaid. “He is also someone who splits outwhen we go to our spread formation andcatches some passes for us.”Cameron Wright saw time at both linebackerand fullback last season and willlook to take over those positions fulltime in 2012 while Dan Ferguson alsosaw time as a starter last season ondefense, but will be looked to as aweapon this season at running back orwide receiver.“We do have three lineman returning forus,” North said. “Jordan Ellis, WilliamNowell and Caleb Genther will take careof our line. They will have to protectDylan MacCubbin, who will be our quarterbackthis season.”Jon Coe will be another weapon atreceiver while the Wolverines will look tosome new targets at the tight end position.“Caleb Lawson and Danny DeMarcoboth saw some time on the defensiveside of the ball,” North said. “This yearthey will likely split some time at tightend as well.”OUTLOOK FOR 2012:After a 4-4 record, the Wolverines willlook to continue to grow.“I’d be pleased if we were close to thatsame record this season,” North said.“We went into the playoffs with a 4-3record before losing and I was pleased. We have five or six starters on both sidesof the ball coming back, but they aregoing to have to step up.”One of the issues Westfield will face isthe loss of many players who had previouslyhandled the football.“With the loss of the guys who had handledtheballwewillhaveachallengetrying to replace them,” North said. “Wehave guys with experience. Some ofthese guys have been playing for a whilenow. It is on them to lead this team.”OUTLOOK FOR CLASS SOUTH:Salamanca finished top in the Class CSouth standings last year, while Southwesternwas a close second.“I think Southwestern always has to bementioned in the first breath,” Northsaid. “Salamanca lost some guys, butthey should be right up there again. Ithink whoever can stay healthy could beright up there with Southwestern.”Falconer, Cassadaga Valley and Allegeny-Limestone will all be in the hunt with theother teams to win the Class C Southdivision.KEY GAME OF SEASON:While Westfield does not play Southwesternuntil the second week of the season,North believes Week 1 will be the mostimportant game of the season for theWolverines.“Allegeny-Limestone is our opener athome,” North said. “It is important forus to jump right into so we are ready forSouthwestern. The season ended indisappointing fashion, however, as the Panthers fell toClymer, 38-6, in their playoff opener.“We did a pretty good job (overall),’’ coach Chris Paynesaid. “The year was kind of like we expected it to be. Wewere in the hunt until the end of the year. The end ofthe season was pretty disappointing. Against Clymer wehad some injuries in the first half and never got in thegame after that. The year went well until the finalgame.’’Panama had beaten Clymer during the regular seasonbut the Pirates were on a roll by the time the two teamsmet in the playoffs. In that game, Panama had troublewith Clymer’s rushing attack as tailback Ryan Phelpscarried the ball 30 times for 204 yards and two touchdownsand Jake Wiggers added four touchdown runs.Clymer advanced to the Class DD finals at Ralph WilsonStadium, where it lost to Chautauqua Lake, 14-0.KEY PLAYERS LOST:The Panthers lost a handful of quality of players, includingNick Lenart, who was a three-year starter at quarterback. Also gone are running back Tyler Marsh, tightend/defensive end Dylan Stow, defensive standoutAndrea Marsh and Hunter Waller.“Losing those five seniors hurt the team but I think we’llbe able to fill in those positions with some of ouryounger players,’’ Payne said.KEY RETURNEES:Running back/safety Robbie Benson figures to be one ofthe better players in the league and Alec Blose is expectedto be a big contributor at either tight end of fullback.Kelvin Eddy is also likely to get some carries as the Pantherswere looking for another fullback and runningback during preseason practices. The offensive line should be a strength with most of that58 GRIDIRON, AUGUST 30, 2012

unit returning, including Devin Ireland,Tony Paterniti and Tanner Propheter, who was first-team all-league last year.Dustin Smouse, Mike Schreve, JacobShort and Tyce Schneider will also playalong the line and Troy Franklin isexpected to make an impact out of thedefensive backfield. The Panthers’ jayvee team is coming offa very successful season in which theyposted a 7-1 record – with their only losscoming in their final game – so Payneexpects to see some kids off that teamfilling valuable roles on the varsity teamthis season.Junior Bryce Payne will battle with seniorSawyer Eggleston for the starting quarterbackposition, and Steven Enlow andEric Schutte will contribute.Payne is pleased with his team’s numbersthis year, with 44 kids turning out.OUTLOOK FOR 2012:The Panthers figure to be among the topteams in the league, though a handful ofother teams will also be in the mix forthe division title.“I think we have the same outlook as lastyear,’’ Payne said. “We want to be in thetop four. Our goal is always to win thedivision. We haven’t won a division titlein a while, but that’s always our first goal.“We want to try to get in the top fourspots and a have a chance to win a semifinalgame. If our course of action takesus further than that we’ll have to readjustour goals. We want to be competitive andwe want to be in the mix at the end ofthe season.’’OUTLOOK FOR CLASS DD:“It’s a good league,’’ Payne said. “It’sgood for the small schools. It’s very competitive.’’Class DD also figures to be more wideopenthis year with the move to Class Dby Chautauqua Lake, which won the sectionalchampionship last year to cap anundefeated season in which it dominatedmost of its league opponents.Panama, Clymer, Ellicottville/West Valleyand Sherman/Ripley all finished within agame of each other in second throughfifth place. Payne figures those sameteams will be in the mix for the leaguetitle this year.“Dan Lictus has been starting since I canremember,’’ Payne said of Clymer’sstandout lineman, “and Clymer has apretty strong senior class this year. Ellicottvilledidn’t lose much either. Theyhad a lot of juniors last year so they havea ton back. Sherman has very good athletesand is very well-coached. We’regoing to have pretty good games. Youhave to be out there playing your best ifyou want to have a chance.’’KEY GAME OF SEASON:“I think it’s going to be Week One,’’Payne said. “I always say that but I reallybelieve that this year. Sept. 12012SCHEDULEClymerSept. 7Sept. 15at Pine ValleyWestfieldSept. 22Sept. 28Oct. 6Oct. 13HEAD COACH:Bob Krenzer.at Panamaat EllicottvilleFranklinvilleat ForestvilleSHERMAN wildcatsSherman linemen: Travis Henry, Trevor Enterline, Dominique Rammelt, B L-R Riley Lees, Jacob Toy, Jon SpachtRECAP OF 2011 SEASON:The youthful Wildcats posted a 4-3 league record anda 6-3 overall record and won the DD Bowl championshipafter narrowly missing out on the Section 6playoffs. Sherman finished the regular season in a tiewith Clymer and Ellicottville for third place in ClassDD but dropped to the fifth seed – and out of the sectionalplayoffs – due to tiebreakers.“Naturally we were disappointed,’’ Sherman coachBob Krenzer said. “You’re always disappointed whenyou don’t win everything. But we kept working at it.We should have a few benefits because of that thisyear.’’The Wildcats downed Pine Valley, 30-0, in the semifinalsbefore getting by Franklinville, 12-8, in the finals.Krenzer believes those two bowl playoff victories willhelp the team this year.“There’s no doubt about that,’’ he said. “Even thoughwe were very disappointed losing on a tiebreaker, thekids continued to want to play and they did a nice jobin the DD Bowl qualifier and the DD Bowl (championship).’’The season prior, Sherman won the D Bowl over Cattaraugus-LittleValley.KEY PLAYERS LOST:The Wildcats only lost a handful of players, led by runningback/linebacker Kyle Keith. In just their two playoffgames, Keith carried the ball a combined 41 timesfor 250 yards, two touchdowns, and a pair of two-pointconversions and made a total of 21 tackles. That wasthe type of impact Keith had on both sides of the ballthroughout the season.“Replacing Kyle Keith is going to be hard,’’ Krenzersaid.Sherman also lost running back/safety Nick Alday, offensive lineman/linebacker Cody Graczyk, two-waystarter David Lyon and cornerback Zack Starceski.66 GRIDIRON, AUGUST 30, 2012

KEY RETURNEES:The Wildcats return seven starters on bothsides of the ball.181-104 record, believes that wins are a secondarygoal to getting the kids to play up totheir potential.Quarterback/defensive back Andrew Grahamis back, as is first-team all-leaguedefensive lineman Trevor Interline, who willalso line up at fullback.Devin Moorhead will take over some of theball-carrying duties, along with NickGriener. Other returnees include offensivelineman Jacob Toy, tight end/linebackerDylan Scouton, offensive and defensive linemanTravis Henry, defensive back KyleHannold, and Riley Lees and DominicRammelt, who became a starter during theseason.OUTLOOK FOR 2012:Krenzer would like to see his team in themix for the league title, but the longtimecoach realizes that the bigger rewards comein the postseason.“You want to win the league, obviously, butthere are two seasons,’’ he said. “The firstseason is important because you’ve got toqualify (for the playoffs) and get anothergame. But the real season is the second season.’’Krenzer also knows that contending in theregular season and advancing in the playoffs– especially at the small-school level –often comes down to which team has thefewest injuries.“I always qualify it by saying we have to belucky enough to stay healthy,’’ Krenzer said.“You lose the wrong person or persons andit’s devastating. With some good luck thisyear in regard to staying healthy I expectthat we should be very much in the hunt ofthings.’’The longtime coach, who has compiled a“What we strive to do – our coaching philosophy– is that we just want the kids to playat least to the best of their ability and if thatmeans we win games that’s good,’’ Krenzersaid. ``Of course it’s easy to say that whenyou don’t have to prove yourself. Whenyou’re a young coach it’s a lot of pressure.’’OUTLOOK FOR CLASS DD:With Chautauqua Lake moving up to ClassD, the Class DD title will likely have severalcontenders. Panama finished in secondplace last year and Clymer, Sherman andEllicottville/West Valley were all one gameback. Another game behind those teams wasFranklinville.“I think that Clymer is definitely a contender,’’Krenzer said. “Panama’s jayveeteam was flat-out awesome. Franklinvillebelieves they are going to be stronger thisyear. When you get down to the bottom line, every game is just as important as the previousgame and the next game. You’ve got towin them one at a time, if you can.’’KEY GAME OF SEASON:Krenzer pointed to the season-opener onSaturday, when the Wildcats will host rivalClymer in a game featuring two of theleague’s top teams.“I look at it one week at a time,’’ Krenzersaid. “We’ve got to start off with Clymer andthey have some positions that are extremelytalented. They are going to be a challengein the first game.“It’s an important game because we’re soclose. But being ready to play for everygame is the challenge in our league.’’Sherman backs: Trever Enterline, Andrew Graham, Devin MoreheartMack’sHOMETOWN MARKET104 Church St., Sherman, NY 14781716-761-MACK (6225 )Mack’s has all yourtailgating needs!Stop By For Your Chips &Dip, Hot Dogs,Hamburgers & SodaCALL AHEAD TO HAVE YOUR SUBSMADE & READY TO GO!!GRIDIRON, AUGUST 30, 2012 67

The Timberwolves, who ended theseason at 4-5, made the most of their spot in the bowlplayoffs, however, as they defeated Allegany-Limestone,24-18, to win the Class C Bowl Championship.“It was sort of an up and down year for us,’’coachTim Miller said. “We finished strong, winning the CBowl. We finished on a positive note. (Qualifying forthe sectional playoffs) is always the goal but someyears it’s harder to attain that goal than others. Wewere close last year – there was a three-way tie for thelast spot and we lost out on tiebreakers. But you makethe best of your situation. We got to play two moregames and get two more victories so there are positives.’’74 GRIDIRON, AUGUST 30, 2012

Cattaraugus-Little Valley backs: Matt Booth, Sam Agnew, Gil KeenenCattaraugus-Little Valley moved up lastseason from Class D to Class C South. Now it moves back down to Class D.“Moving to a new league last year, we feltpretty good about it. We were competitiveevery week,’’ Miller said. “Moving backdown, it makes it tough but that’s just oneof the challenges of being one of thoseschools that’s on the borderline.’’When the Timberwolves were last in ClassD two seasons ago, they lost in the D Bowlchampionship to Sherman.KEY PLAYERS LOST:The biggest losses for Cattaraugus-LittleValley are running back Josh Forster andmost of the offensive line he ran behind.Forster finished with nearly 1,300 rushingyards and was a workhorse for the Timberwolves.“He did a little bit of everything for us,’’Miller said. “We’ll miss him a lot. He was atough, tough football player.’’Only one player returns to the offensiveline, with Jim Agnew and James Lenahantwo of the standouts who will be missedfrom that unit.KEY RETURNEES:Cattaraugus-Little Valley returns aboutseven starters this year, though a couple ofthem only started the last few games dueto injury.Fullback and middle linebacker MattBooth figures to be one of the topreturnees.“He’s going to be a big key for us,’’ Millersaid. “He’s worked very hard in the offseasonand he’s come back bigger andstronger. We’ll look to Matt for leadership, particularly on the defensive side, and forcarrying the ball on offense.’’Starting quarterback Sam Agnew alsoreturns.“It’s always good to bring back your quarterback,’’Miller said. “It’s so much easierto get your offense going when you have akid who knows what’s going on.’’OUTLOOK FOR 2012:Another year, another new league for theTimberwolves.“Fortunately, Class D is not a completelyunfamiliar league,’’ Miller said. “The onlyactual new opponent is InternationalPrep. We don’t know a lot about them. Butthe other schools, we’ve played all of themin the last few years.“There are certain things you know. Forexample, when you play Randolph youhave to stop the option. But every teamhas new wrinkles they throw in so to beaway for a year is enough to put you at adisadvantage. There’s a learning curvethere but we’re fortunate in that we’vebeen around these teams before.’’Miller’s goals for his team are the same asthey are most years.“We want to be competitive and, as always,we’d like to be in the playoff picture at theend of the year,’’ he said. “It will be asteep hill to climb with all of the kids welost on the line and with the loss of JoshForster, but we’re going to try to climbthat steep hill.’’One thing Miller would like to see thisyear is better defensive play.“We’ve been trying to improve defensively,’’he said. “We didn’t do well enough ondefense last year. We had a tough timekeeping our opponents out of our endzone so we’ve been revamping our defensea little bit. That’s the teamthat everybody is chasing. What I saw lastyear and what I know this year is the rest ofus are all in the mix. You better show upevery night or you can turn around and be0-5 in the league. There’s not a team in theleague that shouldn’t put fear into us.’’KEY GAME OF SEASON:“I think the first two weeks are going to bereal big,’’ Furlong said. “We haveSpringville non-league opening night and Ithink just being a new coach coming off theseason we had last year, it’s going to beimportant for us to play well and get a littleconfidence. I haven’t had a long time withthese kids so I don’t know how much theytrust me yet.“We have Cassadaga Valley right after that.If we don’t come out and play well in thefirst two games then we have Allegany andSouthwestern and I think I could lose thekids real quick.’’Aug. 31Sept. 8Sept. 14Sept. 22Sept. 28Oct. 6Oct. 122012SCHEDULEForestvilleat ClymerPine Valleyat St. Mary'sShermanat PanamaFranklinvilleHEAD COACH:Tim BerganASSISTANT COACHES:Tim Grinols, Chris Mendell, Jim Pawlowski,Mike TelaakSENIORS:Josh Duhan, Peter Gabel, Taylor Grinola,Keegan Kettle, Will Murphy, Jake Rinko,Alex Steinbroner, Ben Scott, Charlie Scott,Jacob Stoll, Storm WilsonJUNIORS:Tanner Gregory, Fletcher McComb, CodyMowry, Dylan Paprocki, Jesse Pollock, LorenzoSmith, Cory Timblin, Cam Wilson.SOPHOMORES:Alex Delity, Zach Logel, Phalla Musall,Calum Watt.ELLICOTTVILLE eagles86 GRIDIRON, AUGUST 30, 2012

RECAP OF 2011 SEASON:Ellicottville went 4-3 in Class DD, finishingin a third-place tie with Clymer and Sherman.Tiebreakers gave the Eagles the fourthseed and a matchup with top-seeded ChautauquaLake in the opening round of theplayoffs. The Thunderbirds dominated thegame, winning 22-0, but despite the loss theseason marked a step in the right directionfor the Eagles.“After going 2-6 in back-to-back years, havinga .500 record was very good, we felt,’’Ellicottville coach Tim Bergan said. “Threeof our four losses were to the teams that wereat Ralph Wilson Stadium.’’The results were even more impressive whenconsidering how young the Eagles were.“We only had two seniors from Ellicottvilleand one from West Valley,’’ Bergan said. Two of their losses came against ChautauquaLake, which went on to win the Section 6Class DD championship, but the Thunderbirdswill not be a problem this year as theyhave moved up to Class D league.KEY PLAYERS LOST:The Eagles lost the bulk of their runninggame with the departure of 1,000-yard rusherand leading scorer Zak Fisher and fullbackJeff Brennan.Fisher was named co-offensive player of theyear in Class DD and also played safety, while Brennan also manned a linebackerposition. The only other loss for Ellicottville was guardShawn Durrenetto.KEY RETURNEES:Bergan will be looking to fill the holes left inthe offensive backfield with a pair of sophomoreswho both saw action as freshmen lastyear.Thalla Musall is expected to handle the bulkof the carries while Callum Watt will takeover the fullback duties.“We feel confident,’’ Bergan said. “Thesekids are good athletes. I don’t envisionthey’re going to be what Zak was but we’ll besharing the load a little bit more. I love to bea one-back team but this team probablywon’t be that.’’Junior Cam Wilson will be back for his thirdyear starting at quarterback, and much ofthe line in front of him also returns: centerCory Tomelin, guard Dylan Paprocki, tacklesWill Murphy and Fletcher Macomb andtight end Storm Wilson.First-team all-league defensive back PeterGabel is back and will also play wide receiver,as will Jake Rinko.“We have a lot of experience coming back,’’Bergan said. “We only have three positionsto fill offensively and two to fill defensively. That gives us a lot of experience.’’OUTLOOK FOR 2012:“We set the goals always the same in Ellicottville,’’Bergan said. “That is start with thefirst game and we want to win that one. Inthe back of your mind you want to make theupper playoffs, then you’d like to make it toRalph Wilson Stadium and, if possible, you’dlike to walk off that field with a win. Andthat’s as far as we can go.’’As with last year, Class DD teams can play fora sectional title but are not eligible toadvance to the Class D state playoffs. Onlyteams from the Class D league are able to dothat.“We’re happy with that situation,’’ Bergansaid. “I think it’s a great opportunity for thekids and I think right now for Ellicottvillewe’re in the right place.’’OUTLOOK FOR CLASS DD:“It’s very competitive in this division,’’Bergan said. “You’ve got to win the gamesyou should win. There are some great footballplayers in the division – Clymer’s gotsome great kids coming back, Panama hadan undefeated jayvee team, Sherman stillhas its quarterback and a bunch of its line,Forestville has a bunch of kids back from lastyear… It’s going to be very competitive.’’If the Eagles’ young players continue toimprove, they should be among the teamscontending for a playoff berth and a shot atplaying at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Bergan, however, doesn’t want to look that far ahead.“My main thing is thinking about (seasonopener)Forestville and going from there,’’Bergan said. “We have Clymer Week Twoand that will be a hugely important game forus. You just have to watch it unfold week byweek. I think it will be like last year. Therewill be tiebreakers to determine the finalfour spots and once you get there you have achance to go to Ralph Wilson (Stadium).’’KEY GAME OF SEASON:“It’s the opener,’’ said Bergan, whose teamwill host Forestville on Friday night. “I can’tgo any further than that. You can’t get to two(wins) if you can’t get one. I have in the backof my mind that Clymer and Sherman willbe key games but I can’t look any furtherthan the first game.’’The Eagles will meet Clymer in Week Twoand Sherman in Week Five.Ellicottville quarterback Cameron WilsonEllicottville running backs: Cody Mowesy, Calvin Watt, Jake Rinko, Lorenzo Smith, PhallaMusaliEllicottville receivers: Tanner Gregory, Taylor Grinols, Storm Wilson, Peter GabelFOOTBALL PREVIEW 2012 87
