8 The Graphic-Advocate Local News February 22, 2012 SUNNYVIEW Thank you to Jo Ann Maguire for this report. “When I walk into the ‘Great Room’ at Sunnyview I look, in awe, at the very tall cornstalk plant on the north wall. It is at the edge of one of the beautiful large windows. It has been secured with a heavy string to help it stay upright, due to the height. With the help of Ted we measured the height at 10 ft. Amazing! The plant was given in memory of resident Carolyn Rodewald in 2006. It was 2008 when Carene took a slip off the original plant to start a new one. She uses rain water and a touch of ‘Miracle Grow’ to work her magic. A year ago John helped her repot the corn stalk in a larger container with fresh soil. This story would not be complete without saying there are many green plants in the room. Not only do they help purify the air but they add a beauty that only a real, live, green plant can do. Thanks, Carene, for your ‘green thumb!’” Thank you to Jo Fickbohm, president of the Sunnyview resident’s group, for this report. “Sunnyview residents were entertained by Peggy Neubaum’s third grade students at 12:45 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. Around 40 kids did several group readings that pertained to Valentine’s Day. They did a very good job and it is always refreshing to watch them perform. Thank you, young-uns!” Jo’s report continues. “Hall 1, consisting of Jo Fickbohm , Betty June Lindy, Jean Christensen, and Helen Huey, hosted a Valentine party on Feb. 14th for the residents. Fortyone resident s were in attendance. The theme of the party was ‘Let’s get acquainted.’ Two days before the party, questions were drawn at random from a hat. These questions were about incidents or memories of the resident’s lives in the past. Some questions were very practical such as ‘How many different cars have you owned and which was your favorite?’ While others were more on the humorous side, such as, ‘What is your earliest memory of a bath and did you have to share the water with others?’ Some residents were a little apprehensive about using the audio system and talking on the microphone. One resident was overheard saying ‘Maybe we should rent a limo and get out of town so we don’t have to do it.’ Several others piped up and said “We’ll go with you.” As it turned out, everyone co-operated and took their turn speaking and it was a very entertaining evening. We did get better acquainted, as we learned about Jeanie Warneke’s ‘most hated road trip’ and Pauline Walters’ ‘scariest thing that ever happened to her.’ Thanks to everyone for your answers, you made the evening enjoyable and we had several good laughs. Homemade cake, soda, and coffee were served by Clarice Martz and Jean Christensen. Residents stayed a while after the program to reminisce and discuss some of the topics related to the questions that were asked earlier. Our next group activity is to be held in March by Hall 5. We are all looking forward to it.” SHADY OAKS One of the Shady Oaks’ residents’ favorite activities is BINGO, which is held every Monday afternoon with volunteer Vicki Keonin. Two regular games of BINGO are played, followed by a game of BLACKOUT. This is no regular game of BLACKOUT though, as the winner gets a traveling BINGO trophy to keep until the next week! Other prizes for BINGO games are all edible, ranging from Cheetos, to candy bars, etc. Themed BINGO games such as “CUPID” or “LUCKY” Bingo are held throughout the year as well. Pictured as our most recent BLACKOUT winner is Steve Rench. Steve has won two weeks in a row and felt very “lucky.” Lucky enough, in fact that he decided to purchase a Powerball ticket. His luck continued when he guessed the correct Powerball number “10” and Steve Rench received a free ticket. The next ticket unfortunately, was not a winner. How exciting that he is able to brag on his short winning streak though! Congrats Steve! Reynolds is the son of Dan and Ranee Reynolds of Rockwell City. At the University, he was a member of Delta Tau Alpha Agricultural Honor Society and a four-year letter-winner for the football team. Reynolds, who graduated cum laude, was also named to the Provost and Vice Presidents List for four years and was included in “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” He has been accepted to Iowa State University College of Veterinarian Medicine for fall 2012. Ray Klinginsmith, who recently completed a term as the president of Rotary International, was the commencement speaker. He served as general counsel and professor of business at the University for 22 years. Truman was ranked No. 1 by Consumers Digest on its list of “Top 50 Values for Public Colleges and Universities” released in the magazine’s June 2011 edition. In its “2011 College Rankings,” Washington Monthly listed Truman No. 3 among master’s universities nationwide based upon the institution’s contributions to the public good, with student service as one of three criteria. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance placed Truman at No. 23 on its list of “100 Best Values in Public Colleges” for 2012. Central College Dean’s List Pella, IA - Jeffrey Redenius, a senior athletic training major, earned a spot on the fall 2011 dean’s list at Central College. Redenius, a native of Lake City, Iowa, is the son of Gary and Luanne Redenius and a graduate of South Central Calhoun High School. The honor is awarded to full-time students who achieve a 3.5 grade point average or higher on a 4.0 scale while taking 12 or more graded credit hours for the semester. Central College is a private, fouryear, residential liberal arts college in Pella, Iowa. Central’s academic program offers 39 majors leading to a bachelor’s degree, along with preprofessional programs and advising. Central was recognized in the 2011 U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings of the best liberal arts colleges in the nation. SUNNY KNOLL This week at Sunny Knoll we started our week off right with Bingo and Spa Day. On Tuesday we had a wonderful Valentines Day party. That morning we made marsh mellow pops. If you have never made this I recommend it! They are so easy and yummy! We served the marshmallow pops and cookies as well as punch at the party. A co worker even let us borrow her punch fountain which added a nice touch. We crowned Gary Johnson as our king and Bertha Ewing as our queen. They were both very surprised but pleased. On Wednesday we enjoyed a day of devotionals and Bible study. Thursday we got together for coupon club. If you can believe it we even have a couple guys that join us! Thursday afternoon I had a good group of ladies making bracelets. The popular colors seemed to be red and pink. Friday was full of social fun. Friday morning is always Men’s coffee and Friday afternoon is spent talking with friends over a bowl of ice cream. We hope everyone enjoyed their Valentines Day as much as we did! OBITUARIES Justin Heuton Lake City – Justin Heuton, 18, died Monday, February 13, 2012 at Moorland. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at South Central Calhoun High School in Lake City with burial in the Lanesboro Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the High School in Lake City. Justin is survived by his father, Tony Heuton of Lake City, special friend, Liz, grandfather, Bob Pankey, grandmother, Jan, greatgrandmother, Nettie Daisy, greatgrandfather, Leonard Konstanz, aunts and uncles, Jeannie, Julie, Tracy, Troy, Terry and Scott, as well as several extended family members. He was preceded in death by his mother, Leigh Heuton, brother, Taylor Heuton, grandparents, Roger Heuton, Paul and Bev Vincent, and great-grandparents, Lou Konstanz, Lorraine Heuton, and Wilber and Lucille Pankey. He was a Senior at South Central Calhoun High School in Lake City. He was active in Football, Golf, Swing Choir and enjoyed trapping and hunting. Iowa to Tony and Leigh (Pankey) Heuton. He was in 8th grade at South Central Calhoun Schools, and enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, trapping, his motorcycle and 4-wheeler. Norval V. DeWitt, 83, West Des Moines, died Feb. 11, 2012, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services were held on Feb. 16 and burial is at Friends Cemetery in New Sharon, Iowa. He served as principal of Rockwell City High School, 1969-1972. Chester Worth Ridgely Chester Worth Ridgely, 83, passed away Jan. 26, 2012, in Madison, Wisconsin. He grew up on a farm outside of Rockwell City. Center, Lake City Shady Oaks Care Center “Dignity In Life” Lake City 464-3106 Ornamental and Turfgrass Applicators Course Offered March 7 Calhoun County Extension and Outreach will offer the Ornamental and Turfgrass Applicators Continuing Instructional Course (CIC) for commercial pesticide applicators on Wednesday, March 7, 2012. The program can be seen at locations across Iowa through the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Pest Management and the Environment (PME) program. The local attendance site is the Calhoun County Extension office at 521 4th Street in Rockwell City. Registration begins at 1:00 p.m., and the course runs from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. The registration fee is $35. To register or to obtain additional information about the CIC, contact the ISU Extension and Outreach office in Calhoun County at 712/297- 8611. The course will provide continuing instructional credit for commercial pesticide applicators certified in categories 2, 3O, 3T, 3OT and 10. Topics to be covered include equipment calibration and safe application techniques; pesticide labels; pesticide stewardship; and Iowa insect, disease and turfgrass updates. Lenten lunch programs begin Beginning Feb. 29, the Senior Center in Rockwell City (at the library building) will have a Lenten program and lunch each Wednesday for five weeks starting at 11:40 a.m. Each week, a different pastor will conduct a program. Those planning on attending need to notify the Senior Center by 10 a.m. on the preceding Monday by calling 712-297-7401. A message may be left on the answering machine. Positive solutions for families Parents are invited to participate in workshops being held at the Stewart Memorial Community Hospital Conference Center conducted by Marcie Lentsch, early childhood specialist.
