Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes.
To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fi ll each row, column
and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box.
You can fi gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the
numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name,
the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
Adds New Company
Total Weather Insurance (TWI) is
helping Growers Manage Weather
risks.
In 2011, corn and soybean growers
shared a common hurdle-extreme
weather. From fl ooded fi elds to
extended dry periods and from cold
spring temperatures to heat stress,
all varieties of extreme weather left
their mark on yields and, ultimately,
grower profi ts. This season The
Climate Corporation released
enhanced products: Total Weather
Insurance (TWI) Corn 2012TM
and TWI Soybean 2012 TM which
provide unprecedented protection
for growers against extreme weather.
TWI is based on target production.
The product helps growers by
insuring against bad weather that can
cause yield shortfalls, and is designed
to pay out for weather events at
higher yields and more frequently
than federal crop insurance. With
TWI, payouts are based solely on
occurrence of adverse weather;
no documentation is required and
payouts are independent of MPCI
claims.
Based on your location and crop,
TWI may include coverage for the
below perils:
• Planting Rain protects
against excessive precipitation that
can delay timely planting and other
fi eldwork.
• Drought with Soil Moister
Tracker TM protects against
depleted soil moister that can limit
reproductive success and yields.
• Daytime Heat Stress
protects against hot days that can
reduce crop growth and result in
yield loss.
• Nighttime Heat Stress
protects against warm nights that
may result in diminished kernel
growth due to increased respiration.
• Excess Rain with Soil
Moisture Tracker TM protects
against excessive local rainfall that
Kelly Walker of Des Moines was
guest speaker at the Feb. 6 meeting
of Signet Chapter No. 1, Order of the
Eastern Star, at the Carroll Masonic
Temple.
Miss Walker chairs the Iowa
Grand Chapter’s “Pathways” Lung
Cancer Education project and also
is a Past Grand Adah. Lung Cancer
Education is the primary project of
Iowa Grand Chapter this year. She
cited as the top 5 causes of non-small
cell lung cancer: smoking, radon,
asbestos, radiation to the chest; and
genetic factors. Her talk focused
upon radon, a colorless, odorless and
radioactive gas that forms naturally
from the decay of radioactive
elements found at different levels
in soils and rocks throughout the
world. After the meeting, members
were given opportunity to purchase
radon detecting kits, as a Grand
Chapter fund-raising project.
can lead to standing water with
starves the crop of oxygen and
promotes disease.
• Early Fall Freeze protects
against early fall freeze events that
may damage plans before full yield
potential is realized.
TWI 2012 Program
Enhancements
The Climate Corporation has
continued to invest deeply in research
and development focused on the
interaction between meteorological
events and production agriculture.
This investment has resulted in new
features and coverage available
to growers: TWI 2012 delivers
protection with enhancements in two
key areas:
Precision Rain falls Grids TM
• 2.5 x 2.5 mile rainfall grids
– over 800,000 grids nationwide.
• 25 times more granular
rainfall measurement that TWI 2011
• Powered by National
Weather Service Doppler radar data
that takes readings up to 1,300 times
per second
Soil Moisture Tracker TM
• Daily assessment of
excess rain and drought conditions
throughout the growing season.
• Estimates the amount of
water entering the soil each day
through rainfall and the amount
of water leaving the soil each
day though plant water use and
evaporation for each Precision
Rainfall Grid
• Utilizes an ultra-high
resolution agronomic database that
describes soil type and soil depth for
every 30 x 30 foot land grid across
the continental United States.
Love burgers? Nominate one
to be Iowa’s Best Burger!
Ames, Iowa– Iowa burger lovers
are encouraged to join this year’s
quest for Iowa’s Best Burger.
Almost every Iowa restaurant,
whether it’s the neighborhood Mom
and Pop joint, or an exclusive white
table cloth establishment, has some
variation of the hamburger on their
menu. So for the third year, the
Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and
the Iowa Beef Industry Council are
kicking off their search for Iowa’s
Best Burger.
Today’s offi cial kickoff is taking
place at the Iowa Beef Expo on
the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des
Moines, and will continue through
March 16.
“We’re looking for the best burger
served in an Iowa restaurant,” said
Elaine Utesch, a Correctionville
farmer who is chairman of the Iowa
Beef Industry Council. Utesch, who
is both a cow-calf producer and
cattle feeder, said the entries need
to be 100% beef burgers. “Although
burgers are often standard fare,
we know from experience that
the winners of this contest serve
fabulous burgers. There’s nothing
standard about them.”
in West Des Moines Feb. 2-3 for
the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation
(IFBF) Speaker Corps. Members
are nominated by their regional
managers and county leaders.
Thirty-seven farmers participated
in the 2012 training session, eager
to learn the latest tools and outreach
strategies to help them share the
story of Iowa agriculture.
The session featured an evening
reception that included legislative
updates from Marty Schwager,
state policy advisor, and Trudy
Wastweet, national policy advisor.
On Feb. 3, Laurie Johns, PR
Opportunity Living is pleased to
announce it will once again hold its
annual Friend, Donor, & Volunteer
Appreciation and Egg…Stravaganza
on Saturday April 7th. Last year,
Opportunity introduced the build-a
basket silent auction and there were
45 Easter baskets built and donated
for the occasion. Everyone who
participated had a great time creating
and bidding on baskets. This year
Opportunity Living is again inviting
businesses, organizations and
individuals to create and donate a
basket for the auction. It is suggested
the basket be at least a $25 value. Let
your creative juices fl ow and build
a basket which refl ects your own
personality or a theme basket that
fi ts your business or organization.
The variety of baskets is part of what
makes the event so much fun.
Baskets should be completed by
March 26th and taken to Opportunity
and nomination procedures
are on the Iowa Beef Industry
Council’s website, www.iabeef.
org. Nominations can also be made
through the Iowa Beef Industry
Council’s Facebook page.
Utesch noted that restaurants
are a valuable partner to the beef
industry. “They do a tremendous
job of preparing and serving our
beef products in delicious and
creative ways. The burger is the all–
American classic, and restaurants
have done an excellent job in giving
customers lots of choices when they
order it.”
The more nominations a burger
receives, the better are the chances
that it will be on the top 10 list
announced in late March. Finalists
will receive a certifi cate and be
eligible for the secret taste-test of
contest judges. The winner will be
announced the fi rst week of May to
kick-off Beef Month.
Last year, 275 restaurants were
named by 3500 nominations. The
winner was the Rusty Duck in
Dexter, while Sac County Cattle
Company of Sac City won the
inaugural event in 2010.
today’s farmers. Training covered
media pitching, writing letters to the
editor, presentation, social media and
high-pressure on-camera television
interviewing skills.
“Farmers know they’ve got to
show consumers who they are by
broadening their reach with media
and consumer groups. Building
confi dence and providing tools
to make that connection is the
foundation of our training,” said
Johns.
The group also met with Des
Moines Register Editorial Page
Editor Randy Evans and Betsy
Freese, a writer, editor and blogger
for the Meredith Corporation’s
“Living the Country Life.”
While Speaker Corps training is
held annually, Johns and Lilienthal
provide customized training sessions
for Farm Bureau counties, schools
and organizations throughout the
year.
Opportunity Living
Easter Egg…Stravaganza
Living’s retail store, Celebrations
to Go, in Lake City. They will be
displayed there until April 4th,
where silent bidding will take place.
The baskets will be displayed in the
gymnasium at Opportunity Acres on
April 7th during the Friend, Donor,
& Volunteer Appreciation breakfast.
Final bids will be taken at 11AM and
bidding will be closed. Opportunity
Living invites you to join the fun by
building a basket for the auction.
Proceeds from the auction will be
