An important learning center for
the developing Iowa grape growing
business is the vineyards of Richard
Black near Farnhamville, 3228
Xenia Ave.
Black has been hosting Viticulture
workshops of the Northwest Iowa
Grape Growers Association for
about nine years.
“I think we’ve got one of the
strongest workshop programs that
we’ve ever had,” said Black, who
besides being a grower of wine
grapes is a retired professor of
art and an internationally known
printmaker.
Fire in RC
The Rockwell City Fire Department responded to a structure fi re at 860 Court Street on Saturday,
Feb. 11, at approximately 1:50 a.m. Rockwell City Police Offi cer Mike Anderson noticed smoke
pouring out of the apartment building and reported the fi re. Nobody was inside the building at
the time of the fi re. The only resident currently living there was building owner, Dusty Seiberling.
Seiberling was out of town at the time of the fi re. Fire department members were on scene until
11:30 a.m. The fi re department’s efforts were hampered due to zero degree temperatures during
the early morning hours. The structure is considered a total loss. Also assisting at the scene
was the Manson Fire Department, Calhoun County EMS, Rockwell City Police Department,
Calhoun County Sheriff’s Offi ce, and the State Fire Marshal’s Offi ce. Cause of the fi re is still under
Supervisors pass jake brake ordinance
By Ken Ross
Graphic-Advocate Editor
The Calhoun County Board of
Supervisors approved the fi rst
reading of an ordinance restricting
use of engine compression brakes
(jake brakes) causing excessive
noise within a mile of where the new
four-lane section of Highway 20
ends at Highway 4.
The supervisors had abandoned a
previous proposal to make the ban
(which affects a type of secondary
brake on semi trucks) a countywide
ordinance. The ordinance approved
at the Feb. 14 meeting is specifi c
to an area where residents had
complained about noise.
The ordinance does not restrict all
use of jake brakes, only excessively
loud use of jake brakes and
there would be an exemption for
emergency use. It was noted on Feb.
14 and at previous meetings that
the only trucks that are excessively
loud use a straight pipe system that
violates state law already, but local
law enforcement offi cers are not
trained in muffl er system inspection.
The ordinance will not go into
effect until after three readings
and signs will be posted prior to
enforcement. Signs where such
an ordinance has been used in
other counties has wording such as
“engine brake ordinance enforced”
rather than giving precise details on
the signs.
Sheriff Bill Davis, who also drives
a truck, said he and his deputies do
not want to harass truck drivers.
“The goal is not to hammer people,
the goal is to get the word out,”
Davis said.
Scott Jacobs, supervisor, said he
wanted the signs to be large enough
to be noticed. Most towns, such
as some in Calhoun County, have
similar ordinances, but the signs are
so small that nobody notices them.
Property owners in the area have
been present at meetings to support
an ordinance. One of them, Dave
Gidel, spoke on behalf of a jake
brake ordinance at the Feb. 14
meeting.
“It’s pretty much 24 hours a day,”
Gidel said. He added that he knows
that an ordinance will not eliminate
all the noise but he was told that just
putting up a sign would eliminate
about 60 percent of it.
Other county residents, including
those working for a locally based
trucking fi rm, have opposed the
ordinance, both in its previous
countywide form and in its present
site specifi c form.
One of the primary objections to
the ordinance is that it targets truck
drivers while not restricting other
sources of excessive noise.
“Why is this about jake brakes
and not a noise ordinance?” Tom
Anderson asked. Others in the
audience had similar objections and
noted that motorcycles can often be
heard many miles away.
Another objection was the
vagueness of the wording, with
the term “excessive noise” being a
matter of opinion unless a decibel
level is specifi ed and measured
before issuing a ticket.
Audience members also speculated
that the county was “opening a
can of worms” by specifying this
site which would obligate them to
approve future requests all over the
county.
Regarding the ordinances already
in place in local communities, it was
stated that truck drivers generally
assume that those are in place already
and that truck are at reduced speeds
already in towns so the braking noise
would be less.
Gidel said that if motorcycle noise
or any other noise is a concern, then
anyone concerned could request that
the supervisors take action.
“We’re bringing a recommendation
for an ordinance that we think
addresses a serious problem,” Gidel
said.
Cindy Voorde, county attorney,
noted that many violations of laws
involve a subjective judgment by the
law enforcement offi cer, including
public intoxication, reckless driving
and disorderly conduct.
Voorde said that when a person
refutes a charge, it is up to the
law enforcement offi cer to prove
the charge in court. There were
statements from the audience that
a truck driver from out of the area
would not miss a day of work to
contest a charge in court.
Gary Nicholson, supervisor, said
that if anybody wants a jake brake
ordinance near their property, the
person would need to appear before
the supervisors and go through the
same process. He said approval
would not be automatic and that
the property owner would need to
convince the supervisors that the
problem was at the same level it is at
the intersection of Hwy 4 and Hwy.
20.
Dean Hog, a supervisor
participating by conference call,
said the drivers who were violating
the noise ordinance were probably
already violating state law by not
having the proper equipment.
“All we’re doing is putting a
warning out there not to make
excessive noise,” Hoag said.
The motion to pass the ordinance
was approved unanimously.

There's a certain power in silence.
In a recent cover article by Time
Magazine, it was pointed out that,
in our world where extroverts, or the
loudest, get the most attention; introverts,
or the quieter people, may
be the better adjusted. Being a cardcarrying
introvert, I like that theory.
Have you ever been in a crowd of
yakking, noisy people and just want
to scream, “Would everyone just
please shut up!”?
There's a rather sexist joke going
around, mostly amongst men, that
women have 10,000 words in them,
and they're not happy until they get
those 10,000 words out. Daily. The
medical profession tells us that there
may be a good reason for that. It
seems that women have a gland in
their neck that men don't. The jaw
action of talking stimulates that
gland, producing endorphins that
make them feel better. Women love
to talk.
I've written about George Helt before.
In 2010, he passed away at the
age of 92. George had an interesting
and eclectic life of farming, photography,
flying model airplanes,
world travel, and love for his family
and friends. In talking to his wife,
Fern, who is 93, another story about
George emerged.
George had a gravely voice and,
yes, he was shy, or introverted. One
morning, when George woke up,
there was blood on his pillow. Fern
made him go to the doctor. The doctor
couldn't see anything wrong, so
he sent George to Iowa City. At Iowa
City, the doctors ran a tube down
George's throat, but couldn't see
anything wrong. They advised him
not to talk.
That is just what George did. For
six months! Fern wrote a note for
him that he carried in case someone
came up to him and started talking.
The note, in Fern's articulate hand
writing said, “Please excuse me. I
can't talk.”
As I mentioned, George loved to
travel. At the time of the stop-talking
scenario, George had a trip to the
1963 World's Fair in New York City
planned. He was taking his eightyear
old son, Kenneth.
And they went—George not talking
the whole way. George and Ken-
Mitt Romney went into the
recently and introduced himself to
two customers and the waitress -
Tom Tomson, Dick Dickson and
Harriett Harriettson.
Mitt explained that he was
connecting to regular people
in regular towns in his quest to
demonstrate his regularity. Mitt
sat between Tom and Dick at the
counter and Harriett asked whether
Mitt wanted coffee.
“No thank you. I believe I’d like a
mango frappe,” Mitt responded.
“We’re fresh out of mango frappe.
How about orange juice?” she asked.
“Fine, make it a Philippine-Florida
blend, if you don’t mind.”
“No, I don’t mind. That’s all I
drink myself.”
Mitt turned to Tom and asked, “So,
are you eager to start your day of
doing regular work, Tom?”
“Yeah, I can hardly wait to get
started slinging carcasses at the
packing plant.”
“Good, good. And you, Dick, are
you looking forward to your day of
productivity?”
“I just spent an all-nighter in
freezing rain repairing utility lines
and get to go out again after a few
hours rest.”
“Splendid, splendid.”
“Here’s your Philippine-Florida
blend. We’ll have to stock up on
mango frappe for your next visit.”
“Thank you, and how about you,
Harriett, are you content with your
menial yet dignified career choice?”
“Well, you’ll excuse me Mitt if
I don’t feel all that dignified today
after caring for five-year-old twins
who were sick with diarrhea and
nausea all night.”
“What you need is a good live-in
nanny. I know there are some really
reasonably priced ones but you need
to check their immigration papers
real closely,” Mitt said, chuckling
and winking.
“I wouldn’t want to deprive myself
of all the joys of parenthood,”
Harriett said as she walked away to
serve other customers.
“Mitt, what exactly is it you do,
other than run for president?” Tom
asked.
“That’s about it right now. I
worked hard and was frugal so that I
could get an income from dividends
and interest,” Romney said.
“So do you spend a lot of time
managing your investments?” Tom
asked.
“Well, no. For a long time now,
I’ve had my money in a blind trust,
so actually, I can’t manage my
investments.”
We did not have a very good
turnout for our meeting with the
citizens the 21st. The only good
thing is we had some very good
breakfast pizza served by Toni at
Coyotes Café.
We finished work on a balanced
budget. This year we lost $10,600.00
in property tax income. This was due
to the rollback change and lowering
of property values for next year. The
city lost $1,466,889.00 in property
value for 2012-13. We were able
to find a way to cut in certain areas
but still had to increase the special
assessments by about .49 cents per
taxable value of your property. A
$100,000.00 home increases around
$25.00.
We have declared 2 buildings to be
a nuisance and will be working on
the other 5 in the future. If you own
an abandoned house I would suggest
repairing it for habitation, sell it or
tear it down.
We shortened the dates for open
burning but hope to have an area
in town where you can dump the
leaves. There will be a small fee for
a burn permit this year.
As you noticed, we lost 4 trees in
the square. Two have been replanted
already. It was either cut them down
or risk a lawsuit if they fell on a car
or a person. Black ants were eating
the nice looking one by the parking.
What’s Happening
“Don’t you pay like 15 percent
in taxes on millions of dollars in
income?” Dick asked
“Actually, with all my charitable
donations, my take-home pay is only
about 60 percent of what I earn. I
barely have eight-figures to spend
on necessities and a few comforts
each year.”
“So how does a person get enough
money that dividends and interest
bring him an eight-figure annual
income?” Dick asked.
“I provided a valuable service
reorganizing companies that needed
different business plans.”
“Didn’t one company go bankrupt
after your business drained off tens
of millions of dollars in fees?” Tom
asked.
“Well, you win some and some
you don’t win as much.”
“How is going bankrupt winning
anything?” Tom asked.
“Oh, right, the company that went
bankrupt. I guess they didn’t really
win anything. I was talking about
myself. Say, your town here is really
nice. All the trees are just the right
height. You know what I like to do?
I like to sing God Bless America.
Let’s sing all three versus.”
Tom and Dick got up and moved
concern. They do carry more weight
if they are signed. We do not have
the personnel that large cities have
to do various things within the city.
HEALTH & NUTRITION
From Iowa State University Extension
By Holly VanHeel, MHA, RD
Enjoy A Heart Healthy Diet
Use this information as a guide to
help you select heart healthy foods at
the grocery store.
• Produce: Aim for 5 or more
servings of fruits and vegetables
each day to help increase your
soluble fiber
intake. Studies show that doing
so will lower cholesterol levels, help
control blood pressure to lower the
risk for developing heart
disease. For maximum benefits, eat
the skins and choose less processed
varieties.
Top Soluble Fiber Picks: apple
with skin, carrots, orange, pear with
skin, potato with skin
Top Potassium Picks: banana,
baked potato, okra, orange juice,
tomato
Top Antocyanins (blue and
red pigment): blueberries, beets,
cherries, red and blue grapes,
eggplant, red
cabbage, plums
• Fish and Seafood Department:
Aim for 3-5 servings a week. All
are low in fat and calories, and
certain varieties are the best source
of omega-3 essential fats. Omega-3s
will lower triglyceride levels, reduce
blood clot formation and risk of
arrhythmia, stabilize cell membranes
of the heart and improve conduction
of nerve fibers. Fresh and frozen
selections are preferred. Drain, rinse
and choose lower sodium canned
selections to slash excess sodium.
Best Catches: anchovies, herring,
MEAT
USDA Choice
Charcoal
Steaks
Bone-in, Pork
Shoulder
Roast
mackerel, oysters, salmon, sardines,
and white fish
• Plant-based Proteins: Aim for 25
grams soyprotein daily. Studies show
that consuming a lowfat, high-fiber,
plant-based diet including 25 g or
more of soy protein can stop, prevent
and help reverse heart disease. Check
the produce or health food sections
of your store for tofu and the freezer
section for the ‘burgers’ and new
Quorn made from myco-protein,
a derivative of the mushroom family
With all processed foods, watch
sodium content.
Best Bets: all beans, peas and nuts;
tofu; vegetable burgers, “chicken”
patties and nuggets; soy sausage
and bacon; Quorn products. FMI:
www.quorn.com
• Beans, Peas and Grains: Aim
for whole grains. Beans, peas and
grains are concentrated sources of B
vitamins and soluble fiber – which
has been shown to lower cholesterol,
homocysteine and triglyceride levels
– decreasing the risk for developing
heart disease. Dried and frozen
legumes are equally effective. Rinse
and drain canned beans to lower
sodium levels.
Best Bets: all beans, all peas, oats,
barley, brown rice, wild rice.
Nuts and Seeds: Aim for 1-3 oz.
daily worked into a healthful diet.
Nuts and seeds are natural sources
of vitamin E, fiber, plant protein,
magnesium, and potassium – which
are all heart healthy ingredients.
The American Heart Association
found almonds, in particular,
3 69
lb.
1 lb.
89
USDA Choice
Iowa Cut
Top Sirloin
Gold ‘N’ Plump
Cut up
Fryers
favorably affect cholesterol levels
and decrease cardiovascular risks by
30 to 50%. Flaxseeds are the most
concentrated plant source of hearthealthy
omega-3 fatty acids (50%).
Remember to use good portion
control, buy dry roasted versus oil
roasted and keep the salt low. Whole
nuts and seeds keep well at room
temperature in an airtight container
up to one year. Keep ground varieties
in the refrigerator up to 90 days.
Best Bets: almonds, peanuts,
walnuts, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds
• Oils and Spreads: Aim for 3
servings of medicinal margarine
daily. Replacing saturated and
hydrogenated fats with less saturated
fat is more effective in preventing
heart disease than reducing total fat
intake. Medicinal margarine contains
plant sterols to reduce total and LDL
cholesterol levels when consistently
consumed three or more times daily.
If you prefer regular margarine, tub,
whipped and spray margarine are
less saturated than stick.
Good Bets: canola oil; olive oil;
Take Control; Benecol
Better Bets: tub, whipped or spray
margarine
• Dairy: Aim for 2-3 fat-free
servings daily. Choose skim milk or
nonfat, light yogurt for maximum
calcium and minimum sodium.
Dairy products are rich sources of
calcium, magnesium and potassium
for controlling blood pressures.
Best Bets: 1 cup skim milk; fat-free
ricotta cheese; light, nonfat yogurt
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes.
To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fi ll each row, column
and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box.
You can fi gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the
numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name,
the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
Adds New Company
Total Weather Insurance (TWI) is
helping Growers Manage Weather
risks.
In 2011, corn and soybean growers
shared a common hurdle-extreme
weather. From fl ooded fi elds to
extended dry periods and from cold
spring temperatures to heat stress,
all varieties of extreme weather left
their mark on yields and, ultimately,
grower profi ts. This season The
Climate Corporation released
enhanced products: Total Weather
Insurance (TWI) Corn 2012TM
and TWI Soybean 2012 TM which
provide unprecedented protection
for growers against extreme weather.
TWI is based on target production.
The product helps growers by
insuring against bad weather that can
cause yield shortfalls, and is designed
to pay out for weather events at
higher yields and more frequently
than federal crop insurance. With
TWI, payouts are based solely on
occurrence of adverse weather;
no documentation is required and
payouts are independent of MPCI
claims.
Based on your location and crop,
TWI may include coverage for the
below perils:
• Planting Rain protects
against excessive precipitation that
can delay timely planting and other
fi eldwork.
• Drought with Soil Moister
Tracker TM protects against
depleted soil moister that can limit
reproductive success and yields.
• Daytime Heat Stress
protects against hot days that can
reduce crop growth and result in
yield loss.
• Nighttime Heat Stress
protects against warm nights that
may result in diminished kernel
growth due to increased respiration.
• Excess Rain with Soil
Moisture Tracker TM protects
against excessive local rainfall that
Kelly Walker of Des Moines was
guest speaker at the Feb. 6 meeting
of Signet Chapter No. 1, Order of the
Eastern Star, at the Carroll Masonic
Temple.
Miss Walker chairs the Iowa
Grand Chapter’s “Pathways” Lung
Cancer Education project and also
is a Past Grand Adah. Lung Cancer
Education is the primary project of
Iowa Grand Chapter this year. She
cited as the top 5 causes of non-small
cell lung cancer: smoking, radon,
asbestos, radiation to the chest; and
genetic factors. Her talk focused
upon radon, a colorless, odorless and
radioactive gas that forms naturally
from the decay of radioactive
elements found at different levels
in soils and rocks throughout the
world. After the meeting, members
were given opportunity to purchase
radon detecting kits, as a Grand
Chapter fund-raising project.
can lead to standing water with
starves the crop of oxygen and
promotes disease.
• Early Fall Freeze protects
against early fall freeze events that
may damage plans before full yield
potential is realized.
TWI 2012 Program
Enhancements
The Climate Corporation has
continued to invest deeply in research
and development focused on the
interaction between meteorological
events and production agriculture.
This investment has resulted in new
features and coverage available
to growers: TWI 2012 delivers
protection with enhancements in two
key areas:
Precision Rain falls Grids TM
• 2.5 x 2.5 mile rainfall grids
– over 800,000 grids nationwide.
• 25 times more granular
rainfall measurement that TWI 2011
• Powered by National
Weather Service Doppler radar data
that takes readings up to 1,300 times
per second
Soil Moisture Tracker TM
• Daily assessment of
excess rain and drought conditions
throughout the growing season.
• Estimates the amount of
water entering the soil each day
through rainfall and the amount
of water leaving the soil each
day though plant water use and
evaporation for each Precision
Rainfall Grid
• Utilizes an ultra-high
resolution agronomic database that
describes soil type and soil depth for
every 30 x 30 foot land grid across
the continental United States.
Love burgers? Nominate one
to be Iowa’s Best Burger!
Ames, Iowa– Iowa burger lovers
are encouraged to join this year’s
quest for Iowa’s Best Burger.
Almost every Iowa restaurant,
whether it’s the neighborhood Mom
and Pop joint, or an exclusive white
table cloth establishment, has some
variation of the hamburger on their
menu. So for the third year, the
Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and
the Iowa Beef Industry Council are
kicking off their search for Iowa’s
Best Burger.
Today’s offi cial kickoff is taking
place at the Iowa Beef Expo on
the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des
Moines, and will continue through
March 16.
“We’re looking for the best burger
served in an Iowa restaurant,” said
Elaine Utesch, a Correctionville
farmer who is chairman of the Iowa
Beef Industry Council. Utesch, who
is both a cow-calf producer and
cattle feeder, said the entries need
to be 100% beef burgers. “Although
burgers are often standard fare,
we know from experience that
the winners of this contest serve
fabulous burgers. There’s nothing
standard about them.”
Farm Bureau Speaker Corps Group
Lake City, Iowa – Darcy Maulsby
from Lake City attended training
in West Des Moines Feb. 2-3 for
the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation
(IFBF) Speaker Corps. Members
are nominated by their regional
managers and county leaders.
Thirty-seven farmers participated
in the 2012 training session, eager
to learn the latest tools and outreach
strategies to help them share the
story of Iowa agriculture.
The session featured an evening
reception that included legislative
updates from Marty Schwager,
state policy advisor, and Trudy
Wastweet, national policy advisor.
On Feb. 3, Laurie Johns, PR
manager, and Heather Lilienthal,
By Terry Watters
Opportunity Living is pleased to
announce it will once again hold its
annual Friend, Donor, & Volunteer
Appreciation and Egg…Stravaganza
on Saturday April 7th. Last year,
Opportunity introduced the build-a
basket silent auction and there were
45 Easter baskets built and donated
for the occasion. Everyone who
participated had a great time creating
and bidding on baskets. This year
Opportunity Living is again inviting
businesses, organizations and
individuals to create and donate a
basket for the auction. It is suggested
the basket be at least a $25 value. Let
your creative juices fl ow and build
a basket which refl ects your own
personality or a theme basket that
fi ts your business or organization.
The variety of baskets is part of what
makes the event so much fun.
Baskets should be completed by
March 26th and taken to Opportunity
and nomination procedures
are on the Iowa Beef Industry
Council’s website, www.iabeef.
org. Nominations can also be made
through the Iowa Beef Industry
Council’s Facebook page.
Utesch noted that restaurants
are a valuable partner to the beef
industry. “They do a tremendous
job of preparing and serving our
beef products in delicious and
creative ways. The burger is the all–
American classic, and restaurants
have done an excellent job in giving
customers lots of choices when they
order it.”
The more nominations a burger
receives, the better are the chances
that it will be on the top 10 list
announced in late March. Finalists
will receive a certifi cate and be
eligible for the secret taste-test of
contest judges. The winner will be
announced the fi rst week of May to
kick-off Beef Month.
Last year, 275 restaurants were
named by 3500 nominations. The
winner was the Rusty Duck in
Dexter, while Sac County Cattle
Company of Sac City won the
inaugural event in 2010.
today’s farmers. Training covered
media pitching, writing letters to the
editor, presentation, social media and
high-pressure on-camera television
interviewing skills.
“Farmers know they’ve got to
show consumers who they are by
broadening their reach with media
and consumer groups. Building
confi dence and providing tools
to make that connection is the
foundation of our training,” said
Johns.
The group also met with Des
Moines Register Editorial Page
Editor Randy Evans and Betsy
Freese, a writer, editor and blogger
for the Meredith Corporation’s
“Living the Country Life.”
While Speaker Corps training is
held annually, Johns and Lilienthal
provide customized training sessions
for Farm Bureau counties, schools
and organizations throughout the
year.
Opportunity Living
Announces Build-a-Basket
Easter Egg…Stravaganza
Living’s retail store, Celebrations
to Go, in Lake City. They will be
displayed there until April 4th,
where silent bidding will take place.
The baskets will be displayed in the
gymnasium at Opportunity Acres on
April 7th during the Friend, Donor,
& Volunteer Appreciation breakfast.
Final bids will be taken at 11AM and
bidding will be closed. Opportunity
Living invites you to join the fun by
building a basket for the auction.
Proceeds from the auction will be
used for I-Pads, computers, and
February 22, 2012
SUNNYVIEW
Thank you to Jo Ann Maguire for
this report. “When I walk into the
‘Great Room’ at Sunnyview I look,
in awe, at the very tall cornstalk
plant on the north wall. It is at the
edge of one of the beautiful large
windows. It has been secured with
a heavy string to help it stay upright,
due to the height. With the help of
Ted we measured the height at 10 ft.
Amazing!
The plant was given in memory
of resident Carolyn Rodewald in
2006. It was 2008 when Carene
took a slip off the original plant to
start a new one. She uses rain water
and a touch of ‘Miracle Grow’ to
work her magic. A year ago John
helped her repot the corn stalk in a
larger container with fresh soil. This
story would not be complete without
saying there are many green plants
in the room. Not only do they help
purify the air but they add a beauty
that only a real, live, green plant can
do. Thanks, Carene, for your ‘green
thumb!’”
Thank you to Jo Fickbohm,
president of the Sunnyview resident’s
group, for this report. “Sunnyview
residents were entertained by Peggy
Neubaum’s third grade students
at 12:45 p.m. on Valentine’s Day.
Around 40 kids did several group
readings that pertained to Valentine’s
Day. They did a very good job and
it is always refreshing to watch them
perform. Thank you, young-uns!”
Jo’s report continues. “Hall 1,
consisting of Jo Fickbohm , Betty
June Lindy, Jean Christensen, and
Helen Huey, hosted a Valentine party
on Feb. 14th for the residents. Fortyone
resident s were in attendance.
The theme of the party was ‘Let’s
get acquainted.’ Two days before
the party, questions were drawn at
random from a hat. These questions
were about incidents or memories
of the resident’s lives in the past.
Some questions were very practical
such as ‘How many different cars
have you owned and which was
your favorite?’ While others were
more on the humorous side, such as,
‘What is your earliest memory of a
bath and did you have to share the
water with others?’
Some residents were a little
apprehensive about using the
audio system and talking on the
microphone. One resident was
overheard saying ‘Maybe we should
rent a limo and get out of town so
we don’t have to do it.’ Several
others piped up and said “We’ll
go with you.” As it turned out,
everyone co-operated and took their
turn speaking and it was a very
entertaining evening. We did get
better acquainted, as we learned
about Jeanie Warneke’s ‘most hated
road trip’ and Pauline Walters’
‘scariest thing that ever happened to
her.’ Thanks to everyone for your
answers, you made the evening
enjoyable and we had several good
laughs.
Homemade cake, soda, and coffee
were served by Clarice Martz
and Jean Christensen. Residents
stayed a while after the program to
reminisce and discuss some of the
topics related to the questions that
were asked earlier. Our next group
activity is to be held in March by
Hall 5. We are all looking forward
to it.”
SHADY OAKS
One of the Shady Oaks’ residents’
favorite activities is BINGO, which
is held every Monday afternoon
with volunteer Vicki Keonin.
Two regular games of BINGO are
played, followed by a game of
BLACKOUT. This is no regular
game of BLACKOUT though, as
the winner gets a traveling BINGO
trophy to keep until the next
week! Other prizes for BINGO
games are all edible, ranging from
Cheetos, to candy bars, etc. Themed
BINGO games such as “CUPID” or
“LUCKY” Bingo are held throughout
the year as well. Pictured as our most
recent BLACKOUT winner is Steve
Rench. Steve has won two weeks in
a row and felt very “lucky.” Lucky
enough, in fact that he decided to
purchase a Powerball ticket. His
luck continued when he guessed the
correct Powerball number “10” and
Steve Rench
received a free ticket. The next ticket
unfortunately, was not a winner.
How exciting that he is able to brag
on his short winning streak though!
Congrats Steve!
SUNNY
KNOLL
This week at Sunny Knoll we
started our week off right with
Bingo and Spa Day. On Tuesday
we had a wonderful Valentines Day
party. That morning we made marsh
mellow pops. If you have never
made this I recommend it! They
are so easy and yummy! We served
the marshmallow pops and cookies
as well as punch at the party. A co
worker even let us borrow her punch
fountain which added a nice touch.
We crowned Gary Johnson as our
king and Bertha Ewing as our queen.
They were both very surprised but
pleased. On Wednesday we enjoyed
a day of devotionals and Bible
study. Thursday we got together for
coupon club. If you can believe it we
even have a couple guys that join
us! Thursday afternoon I had a good
group of ladies making bracelets.
The popular colors seemed to be red
and pink. Friday was full of social
fun. Friday morning is always Men’s
coffee and Friday afternoon is spent
talking with friends over a bowl
of ice cream. We hope everyone
enjoyed their Valentines Day as
much as we did!
St. Anthony Nursing Home
Recognized by U.S. News &
World Report in 2012 Best
Nursing Homes
Washington D.C. – February 7,
2012 – St. Anthony Nursing Home
has received an exceptional, five
star overall ranking in U.S. News &
World Report’s annual Best Nursing
Homes, released today. The U.S.
News Ranking of Best Nursing
Homes recognizes top-rated homes
in all 50 states and offers important
guidance to families and healthcare
providers caring for people in need
of a nursing home.
“More than 3 million Americans
will spend part of 2012 in a nursing
home, and trying to decide under
pressure which one is best isn’t
easy,” says Avery Comarow, Health
Rankings Editor. “Top-rated nursing
homes are worth considering and
deserve special recognition.”
U.S. News’s evaluation of nursing
homes is based on data from Nursing
Home Compare, a consumer website
run by the Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services. The government
agency sets and enforces standards
for nursing homes (defined as
facilities or portions of facilities
enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid
that provide 24-hour nursing care
and other medical services). Homes
earn an overall rating of one to five
stars, as well as up to five stars in
each of three underlying categories:
health inspections, nurse staffing,
and quality of care. U.S. News
updates each nursing home’s ratings
data quarterly.
Of more than 15,500 homes rated
and profiled on the U.S. News
website, St. Anthony Nursing Home
was among the fewer than 1 in 8 that
received a five-star overall rating in
all four quarters of 2011.
Sherry Greteman, St. Anthony
Nursing Home Director, stated,
“This five-star ranking symbolizes
“It is our goal to assure our
Smith, St. Anthony Interim CEO.
“This rating also demonstrates to
our residents and their families
that we truly care about providing
a safe, compassionate, home-like
environment for our residents.”
Using the search tools available
at http://health.usnews.com/seniorhousing,
consumers can identify
non-profit homes or those that accept
find the best fit.
St. Anthony Nursing Home is a
79-bed non-profit intermediate care
facility offering short- and longterm
rehabilitative nursing care
for residents, as well as dedicated
Alzheimer’s care. Residents benefit
from supervised living with care
designed to meet individual needs,
ranging from minimal assistance
to total care such as bathing,
dressing, feeding, and medication
administration. Residents enjoy a
modern, safe, homelike environment
with continuous care services
provided by a 24-hour professional
staff. Also, because St. Anthony
Nursing Home is attached to St.
Anthony Regional Hospital, a full
array of medical and specialty
services is easily accessible from
providers on the St. Anthony
campus.
Two Wartburg ensembles
performing at regional
choral directors conference
Waverly, Iowa — Two Wartburg
College ensembles will perform at
the regional conference of college
choral directors in Madison. Wis.,
Feb. 10-12
The North Central Division of
the American Choral Directors
Association Conference Concerts
will feature the Wartburg Choir and
the Castle Singers jazz ensemble
The choir, under the direction of
Dr. Lee Nelson, will be among three
college choirs, a youth choir and a
youth orchestra, performing “To Be
Certain of the Dawn: A Holocaust
Memorial Oratorio,” in the spotlight
concert Friday in the 2,251-seat
Overture Center for the Arts.
The Castle Singers jazz ensemble,
under the direction of Dr. Jane
Andrews, will be among 12 groups
performing in individual concerts,
but the only jazz group.
The NC ACDA includes choral
programs in Iowa, Minnesota,
Nebraska and the Dakotas. The
ACDA holds its national conference
in odd-numbered years and has its
seven regional gatherings in evennumbered
years.
“The theme of the conference is
‘Beyond the Notes,’” said Nelson,
director of Wartburg choral activities.
“It’s all about the learning process
rather than just the performance
of great music. It’s what’s music
education is really all about. The
whole conference deals with that at
all different levels.”
The Castle Singers were selected
on the basis of an audition CD with
three styles of music — an a cappella
ballad, a swing number, and a Latin
piece — representing its last three
annual tours.
“It’s peer selection,” Andrews
said. “Other chorale directors listen
to the auditions and select who
should come.”
The Castle Singers will perform
six pieces — “a variety to show what
jazz music is all about,” Andrews
said.
“We’ll do a swing piece, an
improvisation, an a cappella ballad,
two movements from the Jazz
Mass that we commissioned for
our European tour and Christmas
with Wartburg — one is a samba,
the ‘Gloria,’ and the other is blues,
‘Agnus Dei.’ When you think of
jazz, you don’t usually think of
sacred music.”
The 33-member ensemble will
close with its signature piece,
SEE OVER
1,000 DISPLAYS!
“Birdland.”
Meanwhile, Nelson will direct
more than 360 singers and
instrumentalists from four states —
including his 87-member choir — in
an hour-long multimedia production
about the Holocaust. Dr. Brian
Pfaltzgraff, assistant professor of
music at Wartburg, will be a soloist.
The college ensembles —
including those from Minnesota
State University at Mankato and
Nebraska Wesleyan University —
will be joined by the Madison Youth
Choirs (boys and girls) and the
Wisconsin Youth Symphony.
Father Michael O’Connell
of the Basilica of St. Mary’s in
Minneapolis commissioned the work
by composer Stephen Paulus and
librettist Michael Dennis Browne to
commemorate the 60th anniversary
of the end of the Holocaust in 2005.
The production uses photographs by
Russian-American Roman Vishniac
to complement the music.
Nelson previously conducted the
oratorio in 2008 as director of the
St. Cloud (Minn.) State University
choir, which performed at the
Natzweiler-Struthof concentration
camp in present-day France, near the
German border.
He called it a “transformational
experience.”
“It makes the tragic history of
the Holocaust very real for the
performers and the audience alike,”
Nelson said. “It tells the stories of
those lost in the Shoah through the
faces of the children in the Vishniac
photographs. We look at the world
through their eyes, we dialogue with
them throughout the work, then we
turn the lens and look at ourselves.
It’s a nontraditional Holocaust work
in that it is not an ‘in-your-face
piece’ — not overly sentimental, not
gory, but a true reflection on what
happened and is really sincere.”
The choir will take on different
roles, Nelson added, as a Nazi
soldier, a Jewish prisoner, the
Christian alliance helping the Jews
and “Christian guilt.” The children,
who eventually become the “voice
of God,” are involved at the behest
of Father O’Connell.
“He said, ‘Art transcends and
transforms,’” Nelson remarked,
“and his dream has been that young
people perform and study this work.
We are honored to keep that dream
going.”
Titan girls
end season
The South Central Calhoun girls’
basketball team lost to a powerful
Carroll Kuemper team, ending
tournament play for the year but
Head Coach Dave Birks appreciates
the effort of the team during the 21 –
44 loss at Carroll on Feb. 11.
“I was extremely pleased with our
effort, especially on the defensive
end,” Birks said, “ The girls played
with a lot of intensity. Unfortunately,
we had trouble scoring against their
sized and athleticism. The last game
of the season is always rough.”
Kori Assman and Haley Birks
shared top scoring honors for
the Titans with 8 each. Ashley
Henkenius earned 3 points and
Ashley Toms earned 2.
Kevin Poen family receives Good Farm Neighbor Award
During a ceremony recently in Lake City, Kevin Poen was presented with the Good Farm Neighbor Award by Jay Johnson, the Iowa
Deputy Secretary of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. From Left to right: Brian Waddingham, Executive Director of the Coalition
to Support Iowa’s Farmers, Kyle Poen, Tiffany Poen, Lynn Poen, Kevin Poen, Jay Johnson, IA Deputy Secretary of Agriculture and
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey
recently announced that Kevin Poen, a cattleman
from rural Lake City is the winner of the February
“Gary Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award.”
Jay Johnson, the Iowa Deputy Secretary of
Agriculture, presented the award to Poen on Feb.
17 at the Lake City Community Building.
“Kevin is one of many livestock farmers in Iowa
who do a great job caring for their animals, the
land while also serving in their local community,”
Northey said. “The Good Farm Neighbor Award is
a great opportunity to recognize these farmers that
make Iowa agriculture so special.”
Kevin and Lynn Poen and their children Tiffany
and Kyle operate the family’s row-crop, popcorn,
alfalfa and beef cattle operation between Lake City
and Yetter. Kevin is a fourth-generation farmer.
The Poens were nominated for the award by their
neighbor Darcy Maulsby saying, “Not only is he a
successful farmer and livestock producer, but he is
a progressive, community-minded Ag leader who
is committed to creating a brighter future for rural
Iowa.”
Maulsby went on to say, “Kevin is always
interested in finding new solutions to make his
beef operation more efficient, and he is the kind of
cattleman who works hard throughout the year to
protect soil and water quality… He uses minimum
tillage, terraces and waterways on his cropland to
