In 2012, TripAdvisorgave the <strong>Omaha</strong> attraction theNo. 1 ranking in the UnitedStates. Now in 2013, the zoo isunveiling numerous improvementsthat it had been keepingquieter than a bear in hibernation.As part of the <strong>Omaha</strong> <strong>Press</strong><strong>Club</strong>’s Educational Series, clubmembers and guests had theopportunity to hearfirsthand what’s instore this year. HabermanCreighton UniversityDavid Haberman, CreightonUniversity emeritus professor,retired in 1995 after teachingjournalism for 40 years in what isnow called the Department ofJournalism, Media and Computing.He chaired the departmentfrom 1958-1995. He was also an<strong>Omaha</strong> World-Herald reporterand consultant and a contributorto <strong>The</strong> Catholic Voice newspaper.Haberman is co-author of thetextbook “Public Relations: <strong>The</strong>Necessary Art” and authored“Mass Communication Law inNebraska.” He served as an<strong>Omaha</strong> <strong>Press</strong> <strong>Club</strong> president andis a founding trustee of the<strong>Omaha</strong> <strong>Press</strong> <strong>Club</strong> Foundation.Michael Kelly<strong>Omaha</strong> World-HeraldMichael Kelly arrived at the<strong>Omaha</strong> World-Herald in 1970after graduation from the Universityof Cincinnati. Early assignmentscovering police, courts andcity hall gave him the solidfoundation that led to an ongoing43-year career in journalism. In1981, he became World-Heraldsports editor/columnist. Ten yearslater, Kelly became the newspaper’smetro columnist. Amongother honors, he received a nationalaward from the American Society ofNewspaper Editors for columnsabout his daughter, Bridget, whospoke out on behalf of sexualviolencesurvivors after her ownabduction, rape and shooting.Joe PatrickKFAB, KETV, KMTV &WOW RadioJoe Patrick’s broadcasting careerextended over 50 years before hedied in 2009 at the age of 84. <strong>The</strong>Drake University graduate workedfor radio in Iowa at FortDodge, Des Moines, Keokuk andWaterloo. In 1955 he joined LyellBremser at KFAB for sportscoverage, including play-by-playfor NU football. Later, he announcedNU football for WOWRadio. Patrick was a sports anchorfor KMTV and later KETV. Healso hosted shows for BobDevaney and Tom Osborne. We salutewomen in broadcasting by inductingthe two pioneers.Ann Pedersen is an awardwinningjournalist with a 30-yearcareer in broadcast news. <strong>The</strong> firstfemale full-time reporter assignedto the WOWT newsroom, shealso was the first woman in<strong>Omaha</strong> to anchor a regularlyscheduled weekday newscast. Shelater became WOWT assignmenteditor and then assistant newsdirector. In 1988 she becamedirector of news operations forWCCO-TV in Minneapolis, aCBS-owned and operated televisionstation. Pedersen taughtbroadcast journalism at theUniversity of Minnesota and cur-rently is an adjunct professor inthe Department of Journalism,Media and Computing atCreighton University.Carol SchraderKETV, KFABA KETV reporter and newscasterfor 20 years, Carol Schraderwas one of the first women newsanchors on <strong>Omaha</strong> television.Her signature features included“Wednesday’s Child,” focusingon special-needs children seekingadoptive families.
