Manawa ‘Ino, The Storms ofMarch 2012On March 5, 2012, the HonoluluStar-Advertiser reported “the closureof Kuhio Highway, the evacuation of<strong>Anahola</strong> residents, and numerousother road closures, floods andlandslides.” Kaua‘i County was undera severe thunderstorm watch thatwas in effect most of the night. Trafficfrom all over the island was diverted.Two kumu (teachers) from the projectwent to <strong>Anahola</strong> that night to surveythe storm and take video footage asthe storm hit <strong>Anahola</strong> Bay.For weeks following the storm, largedebris dominated the landscape of<strong>Anahola</strong> Bay. Debris and an incredibleamount of tree stumps littered the‘aekai (shorelines) of <strong>Anahola</strong>. Thecommunity cleaned the beach for anentire day. The long-time residentsknew exactly what to do after a stormof that magnitude.
