He went <strong>to</strong> work as a textileartist <strong>in</strong> England and Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Ireland. W<strong>in</strong>s<strong>to</strong>n is now aresident <strong>in</strong> <strong>Malta</strong> with his own studio and gallery. Most of hiswork is related <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> local scenery, work<strong>in</strong>g with differentmediums. He has participated <strong>in</strong> numerous exhibitions,both collectively and solo, and Fund Rais<strong>in</strong>g Auctions. Peter Qu<strong>in</strong>n RWS: City Gate Bakery StallWatercolour, 47 cm x 61 cmEstimate: €800 - €1300Born <strong>in</strong> Dumfries, Scotland, Peter Qu<strong>in</strong>nattended <strong>the</strong> Glasgow School of Art from 1982 <strong>to</strong> 1987.He graduated with first class honours from <strong>the</strong> renownedDraw<strong>in</strong>g and Pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g Department <strong>in</strong> 1986, go<strong>in</strong>g on<strong>to</strong> spend a year study<strong>in</strong>g Art His<strong>to</strong>ry as a postgraduate<strong>in</strong> Glasgow. From 1987 <strong>to</strong> 1990, Qu<strong>in</strong>n had a studio<strong>in</strong> Glasgow and featured <strong>in</strong> many mixed exhibitions <strong>in</strong>Scotland and London. In 1990 he obta<strong>in</strong>ed a PhD <strong>in</strong>His<strong>to</strong>ry of Art from <strong>the</strong> University of Sunderland, wherehe now teaches. He lives <strong>in</strong> Newcastle, and visits <strong>Malta</strong>regularly with his Maltese wife Josiette. Often <strong>in</strong> hispa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>the</strong>re are figures who seem <strong>to</strong> be <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong>some sort of drama and s<strong>to</strong>ry. Patrick Dalli: UntitledCharcoal and watercolour, 50cm x 40cmEstimate: €700 - €900Patrick Dalli was born <strong>in</strong> <strong>Malta</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1955, and fromhis teenage years <strong>to</strong> 1995 he worked primarily throughself-tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. He <strong>the</strong>n started <strong>to</strong> undergo formal <strong>in</strong>structionunder <strong>the</strong> tu<strong>to</strong>rship of An<strong>to</strong>n Calleja, exercis<strong>in</strong>g ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> study of <strong>the</strong> human figure. In those very active years,Dalli concentrated his practice on <strong>the</strong> nude. George Muscat: Ceramic PlateEar<strong>the</strong>nware, 56cm DiameterEstimate: €500 - €600Born <strong>in</strong> Qormi <strong>in</strong> January 1962, George received his educationat <strong>the</strong> Salva<strong>to</strong>re Dimech School for Craftsmen under <strong>the</strong> tu<strong>to</strong>rship ofGabriel Caruana between 1975 and 1978 and has also attendedvarious courses by Maltese and foreign artists which <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r wi<strong>the</strong>xperimentation on his part contributed <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g him an excellent throwerand <strong>in</strong> his acquir<strong>in</strong>g a number of hand build<strong>in</strong>g and glaz<strong>in</strong>g techniques.He has s<strong>in</strong>ce participated <strong>in</strong> several exhibitions <strong>in</strong> <strong>Malta</strong> and abroad.Between 1996 and 2001, George was entrusted with aneven<strong>in</strong>g ceramics class for adults at <strong>the</strong> same school where he hadstudied. In 2001 he presented a TV series where he <strong>in</strong>terviewedMaltese ceramists. Joseph Ellul V<strong>in</strong>centi: A local <strong>to</strong>wn sceneGlazed Ear<strong>the</strong>nware, 30 cm x 58 cmEstimate: €600 - €800Retired architect, chartered electrical eng<strong>in</strong>eer and onceEnemalta Chairman, Joe’s attraction for clay derives from a lifeof construction and design. Clay, he says, br<strong>in</strong>gs you close <strong>to</strong>heaven, because God became <strong>the</strong> first artist <strong>to</strong> use this mediumwhen he created man. Joe draws on his past expertise <strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>ghouses and churches, cupolas and fac<strong>to</strong>ries, <strong>to</strong> give shape <strong>to</strong>his clay. Work<strong>in</strong>g with clay is <strong>in</strong> a way not very different fromwork<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> draw<strong>in</strong>g board. When Joe went back <strong>to</strong> schoolsome six years ago, sitt<strong>in</strong>g at benches with much youngerpupils, it was great fun.Under <strong>the</strong> capable tu<strong>to</strong>rship of George Muscat, at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malta</strong> College of Arts, Science and Technology, he quicklymastered <strong>the</strong> properties of clay and <strong>the</strong> mystique of glaz<strong>in</strong>g. Joe’s work is quite varied. Some of his earlier works could bevery humorous, with figures concocted out of clay and scrap material like cogs, rusty metal and bolts. Arnold Sultana: Is-SajjiedaOil on Canvas, 45 cm x 55 cmEstimate: €700 - €900Arnold Sultana showed <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> art s<strong>in</strong>cechildhood, when he would sketch anyth<strong>in</strong>g that struckhis fancy. He was encouraged by his tu<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> pursuehis talent and go fur<strong>the</strong>r. He <strong>to</strong>ok up oils <strong>to</strong> whichmedium he has adhered throughout his whole pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gcareer. He was <strong>the</strong>n produc<strong>in</strong>g large commissionedcanvasses, mostly of still lifes. These meticulouslyexecuted works gave him <strong>the</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>e of attention <strong>to</strong>detail when he moved on <strong>to</strong> landscapes and portrayalsof <strong>the</strong> local scene for which he is now well known.His pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs have a sense of place and capture<strong>the</strong> moment, by mak<strong>in</strong>g use of a limited palette withcolours which are peculiar <strong>to</strong> our islands. Mat<strong>the</strong>w Kassar: Cittadella, GozoAcrylic on newspaper collage, 39 cm x 88 cmEstimate: €350 - €450Mat<strong>the</strong>w Kassar was born<strong>in</strong> Pietà <strong>in</strong> 1968. He studied art froman early age at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malta</strong> Society ofArts, Manufactures and Commerceand later at <strong>the</strong> sixth form under hismen<strong>to</strong>r, Alfred Chircop. A four-yeardiploma course <strong>in</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g followed at<strong>the</strong> <strong>Malta</strong> School of Art under HarryAlden, Charles Cassar and JosephL. Mallia. After a one year course <strong>in</strong>Ceramics at Targa Gap, he studiedand worked with Rober<strong>to</strong> Cippoloneat his studio <strong>in</strong> Florence. Mat<strong>the</strong>w specialises <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>term<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g his pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs and collages with selectedpieces of newspaper cutt<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>to</strong> produce particular effects. Started as a graphic artist and illustra<strong>to</strong>r,he is a most highly talented pen and <strong>in</strong>k observer of all th<strong>in</strong>gsmundane. His pen and <strong>in</strong>k works are impeccably delicate,<strong>in</strong>cisive and <strong>in</strong>dicative of his <strong>in</strong>terpretation of romanticcorners of perception. His canvases <strong>in</strong> atmospherics andmood capture emotional vigour, with lyrical sentiments ofa romantic poet. He lives <strong>in</strong> Qormi where healso has his studio. Daniel rescues old pieces of wood and uses <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> pa<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong>n, <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g features such as locks and h<strong>in</strong>ges <strong>in</strong> his works.Daniel has a religious philosophy about why he uses wood as <strong>the</strong> base of hispa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs: “When Jesus was born he was placed <strong>in</strong> a wooden manger and diedon a wooden cross. He was <strong>the</strong> youngest student ever <strong>to</strong> beaccepted <strong>to</strong> attend <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malta</strong> Government School of Artunder <strong>the</strong> guidance of <strong>the</strong> Caruana D<strong>in</strong>gli bro<strong>the</strong>rs whorecognized his rare talent.Art critics refer <strong>to</strong> Aldo as a Romantic with a <strong>to</strong>uchof contemporary br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g forth his <strong>in</strong>dividuality. He has <strong>to</strong>his credit works rang<strong>in</strong>g from Church dome pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs andmurals <strong>to</strong> stamp designs, stage scenery and a number ofdignitary portrait commissions both locally and abroad.Aldo will also be remembered as a f<strong>in</strong>e tenor.
