6.6 Parking designWhen implementing the proposed on-streetparking system, streets need to be redesignedto accommodate on-street parking spaces. Thedesign of on-street parking spaces needs to becarefully integrated with traffic lanes, publictransport-priority lanes, bike lanes and sidewalks. To make drivers stick to parking in dedicatedparking spaces and to prevent parking on sidewalksand public spaces, the implementation ofbollards, or other forms of physical separation, isneeded. This also helps keep building entrancesfree from obstructions. At intersections, crossings and bus stops onstreetparking spaces ought to be removed andbulb-outs created. At driveways into parkingbuildings raised driveways should ensure continuouswalkways and pedestrian priority. In the design of the on-street parking system, space should be reserved for public space elementsin-between parking spaces. Instead ofhaving parking spaces along the entire length ofthe street, some spaces can be used for outdoorseating, bike sharing, restaurant seating or otherhigh value uses. This will be beneficial to business, where shop owners could be allowed to use thespace for their use, while creating a more livelystreet.On-street parking examples from (top) Amsterdam,Lyon, Utrect, and Paris. Parking spaces are clearlydemarcated and sidewalks and bike lanes are free fromvehicles. Parking meters are clearly visible (includingcell phone number for cell phone payment) and formalbike parking spaces are provided. Shops entrances arevisible and accessible.Bollards in Seoul keep sidewalks free from parked carsalong the Cheonggyecheon greenway.Beijing Parking, ITDP-China 1371 March 2015
