DEFINITIONS AND GENERAL PROVISIONS1. There will be two classifications <strong>of</strong> CHORISTERS and CORPS DANCERS:Group I - A CHORISTER or CORPS DANCER who is performing in a fully staged operaproduction for the first time under an AGMA contract.Group II - A CHORISTER or CORPS DANCER who is returning for any subsequentseason, who has appeared in any other performance produced by Washington National Opera, orwho has performed under an AGMA contract with any other company. A reference to seasons inthis contract shall be on an annual basis (e.g. 2001-02 season, 2002-03 season, 2003-04 season).30COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENTJuly 1, <strong>2010</strong> through June 30, <strong>2013</strong>
2. A CHORISTER is required to perform singing, acting and movement duties.The singing duties are indicated in the score. The acting and movement duties are the artisticprerogative <strong>of</strong> the STAGE DIRECTOR, movement coach, fight master or CHOREOGRAPHERassembled to create the physical production.3. The CHORISTER is expected, to the best <strong>of</strong> the CHORISTER’S ability, tolearn the movement required by the artistic team. It may be necessary for the artistic team t<strong>of</strong>amiliarize themselves with those CHORISTERS who are best able to carry out specificrequirements (i.e. acting ability, strength, movement abilities, ability to stand perfectly still,ability to march, ballroom dance ability etc.) by having the CHORISTERS demonstrate thoseabilities during a paid rehearsal. This should not be interpreted as an audition since theCHORISTER is already contracted.4. a. Only an individual hired as a SOLO DANCER or CORPSDANCER may be called upon to perform specialized dance choreography, feats requiringspecific training (e.g. lifts), or choreographed movement to which the ARTIST bringspr<strong>of</strong>essional movement training, expertise and experience. MANAGEMENT agrees to engagepr<strong>of</strong>essional SOLO DANCERS and CORPS DANCERS in accordance with the terms andconditions set forth herein when repertory selection and/or artistic prerogative dictates the use <strong>of</strong>pr<strong>of</strong>essional SOLO DANCERS or CORPS DANCERS. In no case shall supernumeraries orCHORISTERS be engaged to dance in place <strong>of</strong> trained pr<strong>of</strong>essional SOLO DANCERS orCORPS DANCERS for any production.b. All CORPS DANCERS employed on a production will beconsidered local hires regardless <strong>of</strong> the location <strong>of</strong> the ARTIST’s domicile.c. (i) MANAGEMENT shall guarantee a minimum <strong>of</strong> sixteen (16) dancepositions per season (e.g. <strong>2010</strong>-2011 season, 2011-2012 season, 2012-<strong>2013</strong> season), for acumulative minimum <strong>of</strong> forty-eight (48) dance positions during the term <strong>of</strong> this Agreement.(ii) MANAGEMENT may carry over up to four (4) unfilled dancepositions from one season to a subsequent season within the term <strong>of</strong> this Agreement.5. In a chorus scene, fifty percent or more <strong>of</strong> the chorus may perform basicdance (e.g. ballroom, folk, square, minuet) that requires three (3) hours or less to set, whennecessary for artistic reasons. If less than 50% <strong>of</strong> the chorus performs basic dance, or if morethan three hours <strong>of</strong> rehearsal is required, the CHORISTERS shall be compensated at 1.5 timesthe applicable performance rate.C. JOB SECURITYAt least 90% <strong>of</strong> the chorus/dance positions available on a per opera and seasonalcumulative basis shall be <strong>of</strong>fered to CHORISTERS/CORPS DANCERS who have performedfor MANAGEMENT under an AGMA contract during prior seasons. The 90% applies to thosewho have auditioned and are available.
