And much of the time, dark. Buteven during difficult and confusing times, there are so many warmand bright spots.I feel oddly happy as I’m writing this column, despite my usualdeadline anxiety. Maybe it’s the sort of family feeling—the good kind—a sense of connection—that has been growing on me during theseyears in the presidency which was hugely reinforced over the holidays. It seems like just a minute ago that we were working on the logisticsfor Rosh Hashanah and then all of a sudden we were freezing the leftover bagelsand cleaning up the crumbs from the break fast after Yom Kippur. It’s not that I felt particularlyprepared for the High Holidays this year, or that I atoned more effectively—oreven enough. But oh, I enjoyed myself! You can’t imagine (unless, perhaps, you’re a past president of this or a similar organization)how wonderful it is to scan through the congregation and see families together, sometimes with the addition of a baby or a fiance(e), and note the loving relationshipsbetween grandparent and grandchildren, and spouses sitting shoulder to shoulder, and children you knew as adolescents who are now college graduates, and childrenyou knew as kindergartners who now read Torah. You might also be surprised to knowjust how inspiring it is to see new members participating, younger members gettinginvolved at a deeper level, and members who expressed their sense of disconnectionnow committing to be a part of creating whatever our future is going to be.Okay, I understand that this might be a rosy view. All these happy families are nothappy all the time, and we confront various bobbles and messes now and then. But tofeel that we are all in community, that we care about each other, that we are a selfsustainingorganism that refreshes and revives itself, that encourages new growth anddeepening loyalty, well, it’s more thrilling than you might think. It is with this sense of warmth and light that I want to encourage you to consider acouple of areas where you and HERJC might connect a little bit more. The first is ourAdult B’nai Mitzvah class, and the second is our planned series of once-a-month Fridaynight family services. Both are ways to connect to each other and our tradition.Even in the dark and the cold, we have gratitude at Thanksgiving and rededicationat Hanukkah. Let me know how you’re connecting.Family Fun TogetherJoin us at Friday Evening Family Kabbalat Shabbat ServicesNovember 14, 2008, December 12, 2008at 6:30 pmpage 2 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2008www.herjc.orgHAKOL

From the Rabbi’s StudyRABBI ANDREW WARMFLASHGod’s Busy DayWhat is God’s day like? In the Talmud, in the tractate Avodah Zarah3b, our sages tell us that God’s day is divided into quarters, duringeach of which God is fully occupied. In the first quarter, God studies Torah. In the second quarter, Godjudges the world, moving from the throne of Justice to the seat ofMercy when God sees guilt that could spell destruction. In the thirdquarter, God feeds the world and all its creatures. And in the fourthquarter, God teaches school children. What are we to make of this ancient text that portrays God as scholar, judge, socialactivist and teacher of children? The answer to this question is suggested by a teachingabout Hanukkah, which begins this year on Sunday evening, December 21.In the Talmud, tractate Shabbat 21b, we learn that the reason we light one candle onthe first night and one more candle each night, is ma’alin b’kodesh v’eyn moridin—inmatters of holiness, we go up, but not down. As the festival proceeds, we want morelight, more radiance, more holiness; not less, and therefore we add a candle each night. On Hanukkah, fulfilling this imperative to ascend in holiness is relatively easy, requiring only a new candle. What about the rest of the year? How do we ascend inholiness? The answer is to emulate God’s busy day.First, we study Torah, because doing so leads us to acts of righteousness andkindness.Second, in our interactions with one another, we can shift from the theme of Justiceto the seat of Mercy, by giving one another the benefit of the doubt and showing eachother rachmanut compassion.Third, just as God feeds the hungry, there are so many things we can do to help othersand improve our world. Finally, as God is a teacher of children, we can teach our children and grandchildren,by example, so that a new generation will be imbued with the richness and joy of Jewishliving.By learning Torah, displaying compassion, doing deeds of social justice and teachingour children, we act like God—and we are ma’alin b’kodesh, we ascend in holiness. With best wishes for a de-light-ful Hanukkah! These family oriented Friday evening services will featurestory telling by Rabbi Warmflashand special songs by Cantor SokolFollowed by a light mealWatch the weekly e-mails for details!HAKOL is publishedby the Hewlett-EastRockaway Jewish Centre/Congregation Etz Chaim295 Main Street,East Rockaway, NY 11518Telephone: 516-599-2634Fax: 516-599-2851E-mail: office@herjc.orgWebsite: www.herjc.orgPresidentLIZ KISLIKliz@herjc.orgVice PresidentsMARILYN COHENJEFFREY FEIGENBLATTDANIEL GERSTMANDR. Hanukkah has come to greet us with dreidelgames, delicious jelly donuts, music for all to enjoy and candles shiningbrightly. We recall the Maccabee family and how they saved usfrom Greek defeat, but more importantly the miracle of finding virginolive oil in the midst of desecration and the miracle of it lastingfor eight full days so that our great Temple could be aglow again. Infact, like other holidays, Hanukkah is marked with its own specialpractices: we read a special haftarah and Torah reading every morning during Hanukkah. We also insert a special line into our daily davening: al hanisim v’al hapurkan v’alhag’vurot v’al hatshuot v’al hamilchamot she-asita lavotenu bayamim hahem bazman hazeh. This text praises God for the miracles of yesterday and today. In fact, in modern dayAmerica, Hanukkah has become a modern day miracle, uniting all Jews in prayer andobservance as we celebrate as one family. I invite everyone to recognize the miracles wetake for granted everyday. By simply implementing prayer into our lives we find wordsto thank God for the miracles that we take for granted, like waking up in the morning, eating fruit and even licking the jelly out of a delicious doughnut As we light eachHanukkah candle this year, we should think about all the other families who are celebratingthis beautiful holiday as well and imagine that, with each blessing we utter, ourvoices come together as one.In the spirit of Hanukkah, I would like to share the beautiful song below. Not byMight and Not by Power by Craig Taubman and Debbie Friedman talks about how thechildren are our voice, our miracle and how they are the power that keeps us connectedto God. Children, so innocent, have faith and hope. They believe, and we shouldlook to our children for that spark with the Almighty. Those who have witnessed the birthof a newborn know how powerful it can be.Not by might and not by powerBut by spirit alone,Shall we all live in peace. The children sing,The children dream,And their tears may fall but we’ll hear them callAnd another song will rise,Another song will rise,Another song will rise. Not by might and not by powerbut by spirit alone, shall we all live in peace. The children sing,The children dream,And their tears may fall but we’ll hear them callAnd another song will rise,Another song will rise,Another song will rise. Not by might and not by powerbut by spirit alone, shall we all live in peace. Not by might. Not by power.Shalom.As, we celebrate Hanukkah this year, bring your children, family and friends toHERJC’s annual Hanukkah party. I hope we can sing this song together and celebrateThe Festival of Lights.page 4 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2008www.herjc.orgHAKOL

That’s right—it was in 1974 that 23 congregants created the Patrons Society.Through good times and bad, we have persevered and today I amproud to report that we have grown to a membership of over 150members. I would like to take this opportunityto thank all of our Patrons for your past support and ask you nowfor your continued support for this coming year.I invite you to join the Patrons Society for this coming year. Our Temple doesn’t havea building fund nor do our dues cover the cost of our budget. The Patrons Society hastraditionally made a large and welcomed impact on helping balance our Temple’s annualbudget. HERJC needs you to step forward and help our Temple continue to grow andmaintain itself as one of the leading congregations on Long Island. When you join the Patrons Society, your name will be placed on the Patrons Plaquein the main lobby of the Synagogue and your name(s) will be published in Hakol in themonth following receipt of your contribution. Most of all, you will be doing somethingextraordinary for our Shul, school and Congregation. There are three participating levels of the Patrons Society. The cost of becoming aPatron is $1,000. The next level is that of a Chai Patron which requires a contributionof $1,800. The highest level of participation is that of a Millennium Patron, which isreached with a contribution of $2,500 or more.If you and your family are interested in becoming members of the Patrons Society, please leave a message for me in the Temple office at 599-2634.It is with great pleasure that I continueto list the names of our Congregantswho have pledged and paid this pastmonth. HanukkahThe Lighting of Hanukkah CandlesThe celebration of Hanukkah begins on the twenty-fifth day of the Hebrew month of Kislev. On this day, a smallgroup of Maccabean soldiers were victorious over the great Greek army, and the desecrated Temple was rededicated tothe service of God. We light candles for eight days, beginning on the evening of December 21, in commemoration ofthe famous miracle of the oil. After the Maccabean victory, one single crucible of oil (enough to light the TempleMenorah for only one day) was found. Miraculously, however, it lasted for eight days, long enough for new consecratedoil to be prepared. The Hanukkah menorah (Hanukkia) has nine candles, eight of which represent the eight days of Hanukkah. Theninth candle, the Shamash, is used to light the other candles and usually towers above the rest. The Hanukkah lights may be lit by any member of the family. In many families, each member lights his or her ownHanukkia.NIGHTLY BLESSINGSBaruch ata Adonai, Elohaynu Melech Haolam, asher kidshanu b’mitsvotav, v’tsivanu,l’hadlik ner shel Hanukkah. We praise You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with Your Mitzvot and commanded us to kindle the Hanukkah lights.Baruch ata Adonai, Elohaynu Melech Haolam,she-asa nisim la-a-vo-tenu, ba-yamim,ha-hem bazman ha-zeh.We praise You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who performed wondrous deeds for our ancestors in days of old at this season.TO BE ADDED ON THE FIRST NIGHT AFTER THE OTHER 2 BLESSINGSBaruch ata Adonai, ElohaynuMelech Haolam, she-he-che-yanuv’ki-y’manu, v’higianu lazman ha-zeh.We praise You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who has given us life, sustained us and enabled us to reach this season.page 8 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2008 www.herjc.org HAKOL

our jewish futurenursery schoolCHERYL KARPProbably one of the most difficulttasks parents need to learn is the artof active listening. Many years ago, when I began parenting my ownchildren I was fortunate to discoverand incorporate this skill in myeveryday communication with them. The skill of active listening is vitaland necessary in order to become aneffective parent. Active listening is a way of listeningand responding to another person that improves mutualunderstanding. Often when people talk to each other, they don’t listen attentively. Parents are so busy multitaskingthat they are often distracted, half-listening,half-thinking about something else. When people areengaged in a conflict, they are often busy formulating aresponse to what is being said rather than active listening. They assume that they have heard what their opponentis saying many times before, so rather than payingattention they focus on how they can respond to winthe argument.I once read a wonderful story by Leo Buscaglia abouta contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of thecontest was to find the most caring child. The winnerwas a four-year-old child whose next door neighborwas an elderly gentleman who had recently lost hiswife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went intothe old gentleman’s yard, climbed onto his lap, and justsat there. When his mother asked him what he had saidto the neighbor, the little boy said, “Nothing, I justhelped him cry.” Active listening can also be the art oflistening with your eyes and heart and knowing thatsometimes people just need time to express their deepestemotions without a response from the listener.Empathic, active listening is the greatest gift parentscan give to their children. It is our duty as parents toput ourselves in our children’s place—to walk in theirshoes—and understand where the child is coming fromwithout imposing our point of view. I leave you withthis wonderful message written by Herbert Lingren. It ismessage to all of us who want to make a better world byteaching our children how to incorporate the art ofactive listening into their everyday lives.I speak because I know my needs,I speak with hesitation because I know not yours,My words come from my life’s experiencesYour understanding comes from yours.Because of this, what I say,And what you hear, may not be the same.So if you will listen carefully,Not only with your ears,But with your eyes and with your heart,Maybe somehow we can communicate.religious schoolDAVID WOOLFEThere was a stretch when a number ofmy colleagues felt an interesting discomfortin being called the ChosenPeople. Instead, they touted themselvesas the Choosing People. Withoutgetting overly involved in a discussionabout whether or not Godcalled us to be distinct from the othernations of the Earth, there is still greatmerit in being a choosing people. At each point in our personal and communal experience,we are called upon to choose, to make a choice.Right and wrong. Good and bad. Life and death. Ineach, the lessons of Judaism direct us to make a choice;the right choice; the good choice; the choice for life.As teachers and parents, there are few things we dothat are more important than modeling the ability topage 18 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2008www.herjc.orgHAKOL

choose wisely and thoughtfully. With that in mind, I would urge all of you to discusswith your children your choice for President and other offices this year. Take your childrenwith you to the polling place (I take it as a matter of faith that you will vote!)Explain how wonderful it is to live in a country where voting is possible. And then, come December, when we celebrate Hanukkah and remember when theJews had to make a choice to live as Jews rather than as assimilated members of aHellenistic culture, remind your children why giving gifts on Hanukkah is fun andlovely, but that the important thing is the choosing. Every day, we choose to be the people—asindividuals and as a community—which we have been chosen to try to be.youth programsTODD HAUSMANTime sure does fly when you’re having fun!
