Location: Zagreb County is part of central Croatia and the greater Zagreb
region. It borders with the City of Zagreb, the Republic of Slovenia and six
Croatian counties: Karlovac, Krapina-Zagorje, Varaždin, Koprivnica-Križevci,
Bjelovar-Bilogora and Sisak-Moslavina.
Transportation connections: The accelerated development of the county
began in the 19th century when Zagreb constructed railways and a modern
highway towards the Adriatic Sea, and towards Central and Eastern Europe,
becoming one of the most important crossroads of South-Eastern Europe.
The county is represented by:

Natural characteristics: Lowlands – Sava, Krapina, Lonja and Odra Rivers;
Lowlands of the marsh areas – fish ponds Vukšinac, Pisarovina and the largest
and most famous Crna mlaka (www.crna-mlaka.t-com.hr), a special
ornithological reserve included on the list of Ramsar sites. Foothills – the
slopes of Mt. Medvednica, Žumberačko and Samoborsko gorje, remote foothills
of Vukomeričke gorice (255 m) and Marijagoričko foothills (312 m). Mountains
- Medvednica (Sljeme 1033 m), Žumberačka gora (Sveta Gera 1178
m) and Samoborsko gorje (highest point is Japetić 879 m and the distinct
Plešivica 778 m).
Climate: moderate continental.
Water: One of the very important natural resources of the county is water,
especially a sufficient supply of quality drinking water. The two most famous
waters are: Jamnica natural mineral water and Jana natural spring water.
The Sava River is the largest river flowing through the county separating the
county into two parts; it flows from west to
east with a length of approximately sixty kilometres.
It is a calm and wide river. Due to
the small difference in altitude, it bypasses
the more elevated areas, creating frequent
sleeves and creating islands in between.
When these sleeves lose contact with the
main river course, marshlands result. Today,
these are present in large numbers of
municipalities along the Sava River. Due
to a range of floodplains and backwaters,
as well as gravel excavations, there are
approximately thirty manmade lakes in the
county: the largest is Čiče (3.5 hectares),
followed by Zajarki, Orešje, Rakitje, Strmec,
Kerestinec, Abesinija and Siromaja
with developed sports fishing. The largest
flood in history was in October 1964; the
new Sava bank, as well as the Sava - Odra
– Sava channel, was constructed as a result of this.
Other important rivers in the county are: Kupa, Kupčina and Odra in the
south, as well as Sutla, Krapina and Lonja in the north.
Protected nature: Medvednica Nature Park (protected since 1981, www.
pp-medvednica.hr) and Žumberak - Samoborsko gorje Nature Park (protected
since 1999, www.pp-zumberak-samoborsko-gorje.hr). The area of Turopoljski
lug, with a surface of 3348 hectares, was proclaimed a protected
area on 12 May 2003 due to its diverse plant and animal species, as well as
large oak forests. It is important to point out that there are special botanical,
ornithological, zoological reserves and forest vegetation reserves in the
county, as well as areas with special protected landscapes. There are also
seven monuments of park architecture, mainly the grounds of castles and
curia, as well as several well known forest parks.

Economy: The most significant economic activities include: trade, industrial
operations, agriculture, small and medium size business, crafts and old
trades, as well as tourism and catering.
Around three quarters of county revenues
are generated by private small and medium
size entrepreneurs. The most numerous are
entrepreneurs in trade and services, followed by the
processing industry. In practice, entrepreneurship,
tourism and the municipal economy have proven to
be the backbone of social and economic prosperity
in Zagreb County.
Agriculture: Agricultural activities include farming
and swine production, cattle breeding, viticulture,
fruit and vegetable growing, as well as fishing. Rural
locations, based on their size and activities, are the
greatest social and natural treasure of the county
(56% are agricultural areas, while 35% of the total
area is forested). The average size of family farms
in the county is approximately 3.35 hectares. The
county is second in Croatia in terms of value of agricultural production, accounting

Autochthonous products: Souvenir Basket of Zagreb County: linen towels,
licitar products (traditional honey biscuits), pottery products, new Portugizac
red wine from Plešivica, new Kraljevina Zelina white wine, fruit liqueurs,
ceramic gifts and candied edible flowers. Other autochthonous products:
honey brandy and honey products, Samobor crystal glass, Samobor bermet
(traditional Samobor aperitif) and muštarda (mustard made of roughly
ground mustard grains with the addition of black grape jam and spices),
Samobor and Turopolje salamis, Suban medicinal plants and teas, products
made by the county’s Eko Association and Zrno Eko Farm, as well as other
food products. The Jamnica mineral water spring has been recognized since
1825, and the water has been on the market since 1891. Most county product
brands can be found in Interspar shopping centres (“Kap zdravlja” - “A drop of
health” apple cider vinegar, Varžak honey, Dragec smoked cheese, Kriško cheese,
Laktec sauerkraut, paprenjak – traditional Croatian gingerbread cake, Filipec
Bermet, Korak wine, Tomac, Jarec, Kos-Jurišić, Kolarić, Brigljević spirits, Haluga,
Perković, Ivančić-Sračić wine and spirits) and Mercator (“Kap zdravlja” apple cider
vinegar, Dragec dried and smoked cheeses, Laktec sauerkraut, Samobor salami,
Portugizac Plešivica red wine, Kraljevina Zelina white wine).
Autochthonous desserts: Samobor custard slice (kremšnite), Rudarska
Greblica (miner’s cake), Plešivički Copanjak,
Zlevanka, Vrbovečka Pera, Jelačić slice.

GENERAL INFORMATION

1. Samobor kremšnite (custard slice)
Ingredients: 1 L milk, 250 g sugar, 70 g
smooth flour, 8 eggs, 1 package vanilla
sugar, 2 pastry crusts
Separate the egg whites and yolks, and cook
the milk to the boil. Mix the egg yolks, flour,
50 g sugar, vanilla sugar, and 200 ml milk.
Cook on high heat for 10 minutes, stirring
constantly to prevent the custard from
burning. Beat the egg whites with remaining
sugar until stiff. Add the cooked cream to the
egg white mixture and fold well. Pour the hot
cream onto the pastry crust in an even layer and
cover with the second pastry crust; cut into squares
and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Plešivički Copanjak (Plešivica cheese dish)
Dough: 500 g flour, 1 tbp pork lard, 3 tbsp
cream, 50 ml water, salt to taste
Knead the dough and leave for 30
minutes. While waiting, make the filling.
Filling: 500 g fresh cottage cheese,
chopped parsley, green onions (1
bunch), 3 tbsp butter, 2 eggs, salt to
taste
Grease the pan with lard and sprinkle
with flour. Roll out the dough. Spread the
filling over half of the dough, and then cover
with the other half of the dough. Tuck in the
ends so the filling does not leak. Bake about 40
minutes at 200ºC.
2. Rudarska Greblica (miner’s cake)
Dough: 400 g flour, 50 g oil, 10 g fresh
yeast, 300 ml milk, cream, 1 tsp sugar

Filling: fresh cottage cheese, 1 egg,
300 g ground walnuts (for sweet cake)
or diced spinach (for salty cake)
Mix the crumbled yeast with 100 ml milk, add
1 sugar. Add flour; mix and allow to rise until
doubled. Roll out the dough in two pieces.
Place one layer of dough on a greased pan, add
filling, and cover with second layer of dough.
Bake approximately 15 minutes at 200ºC.

Kukuruzna Zlevanka (Cornmeal dish)
Ingredients: 3 eggs, 150 g sugar, 500 ml milk, 200 mg fresh
cottage cheese, 6 tbsp cornmeal, 300 ml cream, pinch of salt
Mix all ingredients, except cream, and pour into a greased baking pan.
Cover with cream, sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 40 minutes at 200ºC.
3. Vrbovečka Pera (Vrbovec dish)
Dough: 20 g yeast, 2 tbsp melted
butter, 500 g flour, 1 tsp salt
Filling: fresh cottage cheese, 2
eggs, 200 ml cream, pinch of salt
Knead the dough and leave it in a warm
oven to rise. Mix eggs, cream, and salt
with the cheese. Roll out the dough so
that you cover the bottom and sides of
a greased pan, add the filling, and roll the
edges over it. Bake at 200º C.
Jelačić slice
Ingredients: 1.5 kg chocolate, 1.5 L
whipped cream, 20 egg yolks, 3 eggs,
300 g sugar, 300 g almonds, 200 g
walnuts, 150 g flour, grated lemon peel,
little vanilla sugar
Mix the egg yolks, 3 eggs, and sugar into a
creamy mixture and add the almonds, walnuts,
flour, grated lemon peel and vanilla sugar into the
mixture. Bake in a warm heat and let cool.
Cook the chocolate and whipped cream over maximum
heat, constantly mixing. When it boils, remove from
heat and allow to cool. When cooled, mix until it
rises and becomes crumbly.
For the glaze, grate chocolate and dilute with a
small amount of oil, warming slowly over low
heat while, stirring mixing.
Cover the biscuit with cream and the pour the
warm glaze over the cream. Cut the well cooled
cake into thin slices.

• Vincekovo, St. Vincent’s Day (22.1) – feast
day of vine growers of continental Croatia,
traditional “Vine Grower’s New Year”. Marks
the start of a new production cycle in which
the vines are pruned and then “christened”
with old wine and decorated with sausages
and wheat, corn, grapes and bread, in the
hopes the vines will be fertile and bear
much fruit. Local customs accompanied

land, crops, the green, and cattle. Traditional

youth even jump over the fire. Celebrated
in parishes in which the patron saint is St.
George.

Croatian Climbing
Society from Zagreb
organized their first
excursion from Rude to
Oštrc and Plešivica back in 1875.
As early as 1881, you could enjoy
the view of the picturesque, green
hillsides of the County mountains
from the wooden viewing pyramids
of Plešivica, visited that same
year by many hikers and tourists.
Today there are numerous wellmarked
and maintained hiking
trails in the area. Head out over
attractive cliffs and grassy peaks,
to one of the best equipped
furnished mountain lodges or huts,
picturesque villages and chapels,
pass by medieval structures, fast
mountain brooks, ancient water
mills and waterfalls.

Within Zagreb County, there are 69
common open hunting grounds and
14 state owned hunting grounds, two
state owned duck breeding grounds
with significant game reserves,
and approximately 3500 hunters.
Hunting is prohibited in the three
protected nature sites in the County.
The total hunting area covers
266,886 hectares (while the total
non-hunting area totals 63,465 hectares).
Hunting rights in the hunting
grounds are primarily held by the
hunting associations. Within Zagreb
County, 53 hunting lodges have been
constructed, mostly owned by the
hunting associations. Hunting associations
are also owners of approximately
30 firing ranges for trap shooting,
of which four qualify as Olympic categories.
The main wild game species
are roe deer, boar, rabbit, pheasant,
grey partridge and wild duck.

FISHING TOURISM
The Zagreb County Sports-Fishing
Federation includes 3700 adults and
400 members aged 7-14 years. There
are a total of 23 associations, of
which 19 associations hold water
management rights, while 4 associations
are in the Jastrebarsko mutual
sports-fishing association. Approximately
200 members from 15 associations
are active in competitions,
while the other associations have a
more economic-recreational character.
The associations holding fishing
rights have their own waters (lakes)
which they care for by investing and
including: fishing huts, tables and
benches, barbeques, maintained walking
trails, children’s playgrounds etc.
Other associations which operate in
the Country are competition oriented
societies.
