of Accounting! For many of you this
newsletter is coming via e-mail, a new
format we hope that you will enjoy and one which
will allow us to expand our network and provide
you with pictures and “fun stuff.” And, yes, in

Gary Fleischman received the Hollon Family
Award for Teaching Excellence in Off-Campus
Programs and the 2008–2009 College of Business
Outstanding Senior Teaching Award. Ron
Pedersen was awarded the Promoting Intellectual
Engagement in the First Year Award which is
co-sponsored by ECTL, LeaRN, and Residence
Life & Dining. This award honors instructors
who inspire excitement, inquiry, and autonomy
in first year classes. Gary Fleischman was named
the McGee Hearne & Paiz Faculty Scholar in
Accounting and Mike Doherty was named the
Solomon D. Trujillo Distinguished Associate
Lecturer.
Student News
The University of Wyoming Delta Alpha Chapter
of Beta Alpha Psi returned home with a first place
award at the 2009 Rocky Mountain Regional
Meeting. Current officers Cassie Marshall
(President) and Brent Bright (Vice-President)
along with fellow chapter member, Angie Barrett
will be competing during August 2009 at
Nationals in New York City.
In November 2008 three student Institute of
Management Accountants (IMA) members and
their faculty advisor attended the 9th Annual IMA
Student Leadership Conference in Jacksonville,
Florida. Students had the opportunity to attend
presentations by professionals of well-known
companies throughout the United States and also
had the opportunity to tour the manufacturing
process of Sally Corporation, makers of robotics
for the theme park industry.
In February 2009 IMA members and faculty
advisors attended the Denver-Centennial IMA
Student Night in Denver, CO. In addition to
hearing a presentation by a past president of the
National IMA, students were also able to attend a
career workshop prior to the presentation.

Our very own UW IMA member, Christopher Anacker,
passed Part 1–Business Analysis of the CMA exam this
June and received $500 from the Denver–Centennial
IMA Chapter! Chris was the first to pass a CMA Part
from the “Denver–Centennial receive $500, $300, $200
and two $100 students passing the CMA campaign.”
Campaign dollars are available to students from the
University of Wyoming, CSU, UNC, Regis University,
Johnson & Wales, UCD, DU and Metro who pass a Part
of the CMA exam. Congratulations to Chris!
After a successful spring membership drive, the UW
IMA student chapter has 20 members ready to resume
activities this Fall.

Hats off and heartfelt appreciation to the women and men
diligently serving our country. Stephen “Casey” Green (BS 2008)
was deployed in February; and Amy (Fortuna) (BS 2005) and
Casey Henry, both deployed in April.
Agnessa (Vartanova) Madruga (MS 2005) has added CIA to
her credentials and has promised her family that with three
certifications (CPA, CFE, CIA) she is “done studying for a while.”

Nicholas Grooms (BS 2003) is the newest partner at Mader,

2006) was promoted from Staff Auditor to Senior Auditor with

Future Plans
As you all know, the demand for accounting professionals is still strong. We simply cannot get enough quality
students interested in majoring in accounting to satisfy the needs of our recruiters (although we do have 50
students enrolled in Cost Accounting for the fall semester!). So the Department of Accounting is working with
the Wyoming Society of CPAs to develop programs to inform and recruit junior high and high school students
into the profession. And, Linda Kidwell is recruiting students from surrounding states interested in pursuing a
Master’s in Accounting.
We just completed our five-year academic plan which includes ideas for developing a minor, then major, in
information management in conjunction with the Department of Management and Marketing, developing
CPE for Wyoming practitioners, and growing our enrollment.
