Selecting the right wire or cable to meet the designspecifications in manufacturing any electrical or electronicassembly is only the first step. Just as important as choosingthe proper wire or cable is how that wire or cable is prepared.Faulty stripping, cutting and crimping must be eliminated toachieve maximum performance from the wire or cable. InPRECISION production situations precision wire preparation is essential. The key to consistent precision wire preparation lies in thetool used. That’s where this guide can be of value to you. This guide gives you basic information on common wirepreparation problems and how to eliminate them by choosingthe right IDEAL tool for each job. IDEAL offers the broadestrange of wire stripping tools available. IDEAL is the onesource for wire preparation tools and equipment. This guide is geared to in-plant training of productionforemen, tool room employees, calibration inspectorsand assembly personnel.RELIABILITY4 Mil-Aero Precision Wire Processing

PRODUCTIVITYWire Diameters AffectStripping RequirementsA variety of factors determine just how precisely a wirecan be stripped. Among these are gauge, insulation type, concentricity and others. It would seem that common wiregauges would have equal measurements. This is a commonmisconception. Wire conductor diameters can differ just asinsulation thicknesses vary. Both factors are important whenselecting the proper blades, wire stripper and stripping methodof specific applications. The type of wire to be stripped and thetype of stripping required, non-precision or precision, will helpdetermine the stripping tool and/or method to be employedfor optimum results.ERGONOMICSIDEAL INDUSTRIES, INC.5

Wire Stripping BasicsThere are two basic levels of wire stripping—precision and nonprecision. The first type, precision wire stripping, is employedwhere extreme reliability and critical tolerances must be achieved.Aircraft, computers, aerospace, missiles, radar, and guidancesystems, and communications systems are examples of productswhere precision wire stripping is required. In many cases, themilitary standard is called for. Meeting that standard is rigidlyenforced and calls for the highest quality precision wire stripping. The second, non-precision stripping, is used in the manufacturingof lighting fixtures, electrical appliances, automotive harnesses, etc. Required here are wire strips that assure product reliabilityand are obtained at a relatively low cost. For each type of wire stripping and production requirement, the best tool and/or method to get the job done right mustbe determined.20 Mil-Aero Precision Wire Processing

Custom Stripmaster ®Wire Strippers BasicsThe first of the “controlled action” hand strippers is the CustomStripmaster ® Wire Stripper. Die-type blades allow this toolto perform precision stripping. The design incorporated acounter-bore hole acting as a support, centering the conductorand preventing the blade cutting surface from contacting thesurface of the conductor. Die-type blades are manufactured inmatched sets to assure accuracy and precision stripping. TheCustom Stripmaster ® Wire Stripper has simple, one-squeezeoperation. Just insert wire between blades to desired length, squeeze handles and release.Because of the wide variety of wire used today, there is agreat need for “specials.” These can consist of almost anycombination of hole sizes with almost any combination ofcutting hole and counterbore dimensions.Contact IDEAL INDUSTRIES, INC. for Free ApplicationEngineering Service.AN AEROSPACESTANDARDIDEAL INDUSTRIES, INC.21

Custom Stripmaster ®Wire StrippersThe Custom Stripmaster ® Wire Stripper has set the industry standard inhand-held, precision wire strippers for fast, accurate wire stripping withits one-step, squeeze-action stripping and unique precision blade design. This light-weight wire stripper, made from sturdy die-cast zinc, isdesigned for maximum mobility and high productivity in all typesof non precision and precision stripping applications. The Custom Stripmaster ® Wire Stripper offers extra leverage withits spring-action mechanical design for reduced operator effort. It can be customized with your choice of gripper pads and bladesets to match your wire stripping requirements. The comfort grip handles are color-coded to identify the best toolfor the application. Red handles are used on frames with the thinstationary gripper pad for larger wire (10–14 AWG). Black handlesare used on frames with the thick stationary gripper pad for smallerwire (16–30 AWG). When replacing blades, care must be exercisedto put them into the correct frame with the correct gripper set.Optional short-stop latch and transparent wire stop increasestool versatility and insures consistent strip lengths.Gripper pads hold the wire securely ina centerline relationship with the blade.Die-type blades incorporate a counterboredhole sized to the insulation and an inner cuttinghole sized to the conductor. This variesdepending on insulation type and thickness.WireInsulation slugGripperDie-type blade22 Mil-Aero Precision Wire Processing

Custom Stripmaster ®Wire StrippersFor over sixty years IDEAL INDUSTRIES INC. has been theleader in precision wire stripping. Utilizing die type bladesin our Custom Stripmaster ® , Custom Stripmaster ® Lite WireStripper, and our Stripmaster ® 45-950 Wire Strippers allowus to offer the best strip available today. There are two critical components to each opening to stripwire with die type blades, the cutting hole and the counterbore.Cutting holes cut the insulation to be removed and are sizedto be just slightly larger in diameter than the conductor diameter.Counterbores play a very important roll. Counterbores are sizedbased upon the outside diameter of the finished wire, and aresized to be slightly larger than the outside diameter of the finishedwire. Counterbores are necessary to keep proper alignment whilethe tool actuates, insuring that the user does not scrape, nick ordo any other damage to the conductor.Conductor DiameterInsulation ODCutterCounterboreCutterCounterboreWire Size AWG26 24 22 20 18 16 14 12 100.0230.0390.0230.04650.0220.0520.0280.0430.0280.0550.02920.05950.0340.0520.0340.05950.0350.06350.0420.05950.0420.0670.0420.073Tolerances: Cutter Dia.: ± .001; Counter-bore Dia.: ± .0020.0520.0700.0520.07850.0520.0860.0610.0810.0610.0890.0620.0960.0760.09350.0760.1040.0760.1130.0960.1130.0960.1250.09370.1380.1190.1360.1190.1440.1160.154StripperCat. Calibration ProceduresFor Custom Stripmaster ® and Custom Stripmaster ® Lite Wire Strippers with Die-Type BladesIDEAL INDUSTRIES, INC.Step 1Place the lower stationaryblade half over the blademounting studs.Step 2The blade dogleg should beattached first then depressedto seat itself. Slightly depressblade handle to allow the bladeto be properly seated. Insertthe dogleg of the upper movableblade into the locating slot ofthe side latch.Step 3Position the blade retainingplate over the mounting studs.Install split lock-washers andhex nuts onto the mountingstuds. Do not tighten hex nutsat this time.Step 4First, position the lower bladehalf cutting surface in linewith the lower gripper padsurface by slightly depressingthe gripper handle.Next, depress both handlesjust enough to allow the topand bottom blade surfacesto meet. (Exerting too much pressure on the handles could forcethe bottom blade out of alignment.) Now tighten the hex nuts toa maximum torque value of 10 in. lbs.Step 5Visually check the upperand lower blade alignmentby depressing the bladehandle only until the bladesurfaces make contact.Leaving the gripper pads in the open position, look at theblade cutting holes and mating surface between holes. Thisis most effectively accomplished with a light source behindthe stripper. Look for light in cracks between the cuttingholes. If light can be seen in these areas, inspect the blades’mating surfaces for debris or imperfections. Clean the bladesand check for light “leaks’’ again. If the blades have debrisor imperfections, set-up was not correctly performed. In this case, repeat the set-up procedures.Step 6The final checking procedure to confirm proper blade setupand calibration is to perform a series of strips on wiresamples for which the blades were designed. In doing so,be sure the one-step stripping action is smooth with positiveslug removal. During the stripping process check that thewire does not slip in the grippers and that the wire is notexcessively bent by the gripper pads. Finally, closely inspectthe stripped wire to be certain there are no nicks, scrapes orother defects in the conductor.Should any of the above occur, repeat the blade set-up andcalibration procedures. Also, be certain that the sample wire isindeed correctly matched with the cutting blades used. Referto the blade reference charts on pages 14 through 15 forblade selection guidelines.Optical ComparatorSome customers will have access to an optical comparatorwhich can assist in determining proper blade alignment. In this case, light is used to project blade gap onto ascreen. A template affixed to the screen verifies bladehole size and position. A fixture should be used for repeatcomparisons. This fixture blocks the moveable blade intothe stationary blade.Caution: Never plug or mechanically gauge blade holesas this could result in blade damage. With the cutting blades properly set-up and calibrated, the Custom Stripmaster ® and Standard Stripmaster ® WireStrippers provide automatic, repeatable and superior qualitywire stripping in a wide variety of production applications.Quality control and efficiency are assured.29

Stripmaster ® and Stripmaster ®Lite Wire StrippersThe Stripmaster ® Wire Stripper, a versatile wire stripper,is the standard of the industry. The Standard Stripmaster ®Wire Stripper incorporates a wire gripper that firmly holdsthe wire in a center-line position with the stripping hole.Lever action of the stripper offers a mechanical advantagethat makes wire stripping easier. This is a great aid inproduction applications as operator fatigue is reduced. One light squeeze strips the wire clean up to a full 7 /8 in.(22mm). The jaws are automatically held open to allowremoval of the wire without damaging its end. Thisstripper virtually eliminates all nicking, cutting orfraying on non-precision wire.n Knife-type blades handle general purpose, nonprecisionand coax cable wire strippingn One-step action reduces wire stripping time forincreased productivityn Spring-action mechanical advantage increases wirestripping leverage and reduces operator fatiguen Precision-ground, knife-type blades provide clean, accurate wire strippingn Sturdy die cast frame provides long-term durabilityn Wire gripper holds wire securely in positionn Stripmaster ® Lite designed for smaller hands —3/4 the size of the standard Stripmaster ® Wire Strippern Two tool sizes match user preference and wirestripping requirements34 Mil-Aero Precision Wire Processing

PRODUCTIVITYSelecting the proper tool for your wire and cable ensuresthe quality and consistency desired in a production environment. There are also ergonomic advantages. Using theproper tool and blade produces a clean cut through theinsulation allowing minimal hand force to actuate the tooland break away the insulation. Even selecting the properwire cutter improves the quality of the strip and significantlylessens hand force trauma. If your productionarea is a high risk for repetitive motion disorder, IDEALcan offer proven machines to greatly reduce these safetyissues. These machines will address your major safetyconcerns in addition to providing speed, efficiency andsuperior quality.IDEAL wire cutters produce aclean cut through the insulation.Diagonal cutters do not cutcleanly and decreases thequality of the strip.IDEAL INDUSTRIES, INC.37
