I curtailed mytongue and began to read. “Iwill lift up mine eyes untothe hills, whence cometh myhelp.” (Psalm 121)I lifted up my eyes andthrough the foggy windshieldsaw a car backing slowlytoward us on the shoulderuntil it stopped right in frontof our car. The car was awhite Dodge. My husbandjumped out and I watchedhim greet the driver withan explanation of our need.The man opened his trunkand reached in for a wrench.He refused the cover of anumbrella.Now, I have to explain thatour car was French and usedmetric sized bolts, whichrequire a metric lug wrench.The chance of a Dodgewrench fitting a Peugeot boltis less than snow flurries inJuly in Baltimore.My husband later exclaimedthat the trunk wasfilled with wrenches of allsizes. The man simply puthis hand in and pulled out awrench that was the perfectfit. In a manner of minuteshe swiftly exchanged theneeded bolts from the donorwheels onto the troubled one.He also tightened all the restof the bolts to ensure our safepassage.Then he left as quickly ashe had arrived. We barelyhad a chance to thank him.The rain had stopped.The mood was reverent asmy husband climbed backinto the car. Uncharacteristicallyquietly he asked if I<strong>not</strong>iced what the man waswearing. Yes, I had seen hehad on white jeans and awhite shirt. But, my husbandcontinued, did <strong>you</strong> see hisfeet? On his feet were whitetennis shoes, without a spotof dirt.I have since read accountsof ot<strong>her</strong>s who encounteredin their plight a messengerof help. Our angel had manycharacteristics in commonwith them.
