AMCS Bulletin 12 — Chapter 5 97Dzibilchatun collection (Y-4-9). See Simmons(1980) for a description.Kin Orange-red: KinGroup: KinEstablished by: Andrews V 1989:2–4Regional Inter-Cave Distribution and Frequency:Actun Toh 36, Actun Pech 16Regional Intersite Distribution: N/RRepresentative General Distribution: Komchen(Andrews V 1989:2–4); Ek Balam (Bey et al.1998).Description: See Andrews V 1989:2–4Type Collection Reference: Komchen Y-10-1Forms Present in Caves: Olla (body sherds only),Cajete (lip dia: 27cm)Illustrations: 5.8, bDiscussion: The criteria for including sherds in thistype were problematic. The color of the polishedinteriors of a number of olla sherds is similar toDzudzuquil Cream-to-buff material from Balankanche(Y-13-2, classified by S. Boucher 1997).However, exterior surface finish more closely resemblesthat described by Andrews V (1989:2–4),including the Sierra-like color of exterior slips(10YR 4/6). Slips were glossy for the most part, but slightly waxier slips were included. On thewhole, both paste and slip color resembled that ofSierra Red; however, interior surfaces exhibitedDzudzuquil attributes. Colors of the polished ollainteriors ranged from 7.5YR 6/6 (reddish yellow)to 5YR 6/6 (reddish yellow). It is likely that thesherds we assigned to the Kin group represent atransition to Sierra Red. The Kin Orange-red sherdsfrom Actun Pech possess a thicker, better-adhered,more consistent, and glossier slip than is presenton Kin material from both Actun Toh andKomchen. The slip color of a number of sherdsfrom Actun Pech is similar to Sierra Red: OrangeVariety from Komchen (ibid: 12); however, thepaste is definitely earlier than Sierra.Discussion: Identical to Kin Variety (as describedabove) except striations present on olla interiors.Kin Orange-red Special (Fluted)Group: KinEstablished by: Type: Andrews V 1989:2–4Regional Inter-Cave Distribution and Frequency:Actun Pech 4Regional Intersite Distribution: N/RType Collection Reference: Komchen Y-10-(1–2) fortype onlyForms Present in Caves: Olla (neck sherds only)Illustrations: 5.8, aDiscussion: Identical to Kin Variety (as describedabove) except shallow fluting present on olla necks.Pital Cream: BlotchyGroup: PitalEstablished by: Adams 1971:25–26Regional Inter-Cave Distribution and Frequency:Actun Toh 1Regional Intersite Distribution: N/RRepresentative General Distribution: See Ball1977:36–37Description: See Ball 1977:36Type Collection Reference: BecanIllustrations: N/ADiscussion: Only one small body sherd recovered.Kin Orange-red Special (Striated)Group: KinEstablished by: Type: Andrews V 1989:2–4Regional Inter-Cave Distribution and Frequency:Actun Toh 2Regional Intersite Distribution: N/RRepresentative General Distribution: Komchen (seetype collection)Type Collection Reference: Komchen Y-10-2Forms Present in Caves: Olla (body sherds only)Illustrations: N/A
