112AMCS Bulletin 12 — Chapter 5Discussion: Olla forms are relatively common in thecave collection and are reported at Cobá (RoblesCastellanos 1990:82). However, they appear to berare to non-existent at Ek Balam (Tara Bond, personalcommunication 2000). The direct, roundedrims of many of the sherds from the cave collectionare characteristic of early forms.Carolina Bichrome Incised: CarolinaGroup: CarolinaEstablished by: Robles Castellanos 1988:66Regional Inter-Cave Distribution and Frequency:Actun Toh 446, Actun Pech 126, Pak Ch’en 8Regional Intersite Distribution: El Naranjal (Boucher1997); Grupo Chan Pich (personal observation);T’isil (Ceja Acosta 2000); Kantunilkin, Chiquilá,Leona Vicario (as Tancah Variegated, Sanders1960:251–252)Representative General Distribution: Isla Cerritos(Robles Castellanos 1988:66); Cobá (as “UnnamedRed-on-cream,” Robles Castellanos 1990:87–88);Ek Balam (Bey et al. 1998); Tancah (as TancahVariegated, Sanders 1960); Xelha (Canche M.1992); Yucatán-Campeche Coast (as “UnspecifiedIncised-dichrome Type” Ball 1978:118); SanGervasio(Peraza 1993); Yaxuna (Brainerd 1958:120)Description: see Robles Castellanos 1988:66Type Collection Reference: Isla Cerritos Y-53-5; XelhaQ-14-3, San Gervasio Q-11-4Forms Present in Caves: Cajete, OllaIllustrations: 5.35, a–b; 5.36, a–b; 5.37, a–g; 5.38, a–c;5.39, a–h; 5.40, a–g; 5.41, a–fDiscussion: Paste and tempering is occasionally quitesimilar to Huachinango Bichrome Incised. Theoccasional fiber-tempering of sherds (as well asthe occurrence of olla forms for this type) was alsonoted at Ek Balam (Tara Bond, personal communication2000). At least one fiber-tempered sherdwas observed in the Isla Cerritos collection. Alsopresent in the same collection is the almond-shapedeverted rim style, which is well represented in cavecollection and possibly constitutes a later development.Decoration typically consists of postfireand postslip incisions and punctations. Painteddecoration consists of red-on-cream lines and dots. The striating of olla interiors (both neck and shoulder)common in the cave collection is also presentin the Xelha collection (Q-14-3). Olla slips appearto be better adhered than those of cajetes. In termsof form and decoration, olla necks are similar tothose from the Cobá collection (as “Unnamed Redon-Cream”).GroupEarly ClassicAD 350 – AD 600Type: VarietyAguila Aguila Orange: AguilaAguila Orange: UnspecifiedSabán Sabán Burdo: SabánSabán Burdo: BecoobBalanza Balanza Black: UnspecifiedLucha Incised: UnspecifiedCetelac Cetelac Fiber-tempered: CetelacCetelac Fiber-tempered: XcánUnspecified Xoclan Trickle-on-red: XoclanDos Arroyos Dos Arroyos Orange Polychrome:Dos ArroyosCaldero Buff Polychrome:UnspecifiedSan Blas Red-on-orange:UnspecifiedTimucuy Timucuy Orange Polychrome:TimucuyTituc Orange Polychrome: TitucTituc Orange Polychrome: BandedTituc Orange Polychrome:CamichínTituc Orange Polychrome:UnspecifiedAguila Orange: AguilaGroup: AguilaEstablished by: Smith and Gifford 1966:154, 171Regional Inter-Cave Distribution and Frequency:Actun Tacbi Ha 1Regional Intersite Distribution: El Naranjal (personalobservation)Representative General Distribution: type at Ek Balam(Bey et al. 1998)Description: see Smith and Gifford 1966:154, 171Type Collection Reference: N/AForms Present in Caves: CajeteIllustrations: N/AAguila Orange: UnspecifiedGroup: AguilaEstablished by: Type: Smith and Gifford 1966:154Regional Inter-Cave Distribution and Frequency:Actun Toh 5Regional Intersite Distribution: N/RRepresentative General Distribution: Cobá (RoblesCastellanos 1990:94–97); type: Ek Balam (Bey etal. 1998); Komchen (Andrews V 1988)Description: see Smith and Gifford 1966:154
