We are excited to embark on a
New Year that is sure to bring
about many changes within
our Chapter. The need to grow
and expand our level of service
continues to escalate as Alzheimer’s
disease impacts more Coloradoans.
We could not accomplish our
mission without the dedication
of our volunteer leadership. The
Board of Directors is made up of
committed, caring individuals with
a variety of talents to provide the
expertise to continually “raise the
bar” for the Alzheimer’s Association.
Many of the board members serve
six years and contribute enormous
amounts of time, energy, and
Landmark Alzheimer study seeks participants
Beginning in April 2005, Alzheimer’s Disease
Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) will enroll about 800
older adults at 50 sites across the United States and Canada
in a study to determine better ways to identify people at
Scientists are still working to understand mild cognitive
impairment (MCI) and its relationship to Alzheimer’s
disease. Because basic questions about this disorder remain
to be answered, the denition of MCI continues to evolve.
MCI is most commonly used to describe a subtle but
measurable memory disorder. A person with MCI has
memory problems greater than normal for his or her age
but does not show other symptoms of dementia, such as
impaired judgment or reasoning.
In 2001, the American Academy of Neurology (AAN)
published practice guidelines for the early detection of
memory problems. The AAN workgroup of specialists
identied the following criteria for an MCI diagnosis:
· An individual’s report of his or her own memory
problems, preferably confirmed by another person
· Measurable, greater-than-normal memory impairment
detected with standard assessment tests
· Normal overall thinking and reasoning skills
· Ability to perform normal daily activities
risk of developing Alzheimer’s and assess whether drugs
being studied are effective.
The study, supported by a $1 million contribution
from the Alzheimer’s Association, is seeking about 200
participants with no cognitive symptoms. Another 400
should have mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a condition
in which individuals have memory problems that can be
measured on tests but do not interfere signicantly with
usual daily activities. An additional 200 enrollees will have
early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
Recruitment for the study will begin in spring 2005;
those interested in participating can contact the National
Institute of Aging’s Alzheimer’s Disease Education and
Referral (ADEAR) Center at 800.438.4380.
Is it just mild cognitive impairment, or is it Alzheimer’s?
A person with MCI has memory problems
greater than normal for his or her age
but does not show other symptoms of
dementia, such as impaired judgment or
reasoning.
Research suggests that nearly all cases of MCI progress to
Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. Other
studies suggest that some people with MCI may not
develop dementia, and some may even “revert” to normal,
but that many are at a very high risk of progressing to
dementia.
There is currently no treatment for MCI approved by
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Some
physicians may prescribe certain FDA-approved Alzheimer
medications and vitamin E supplements to treat symptoms
associated with MCI. Several treatments for MCI are now
being tested in large clinical trials.

Americans As Afraid of Caring for a Loved One with
Alzheimer’s As They Are of Getting Alzheimer’s
Alzheimer’s Association Joins Senators Clinton,
Grassley and Bond to Urge Passage of Ronald
Reagan Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Act of 2004
to Provide Relief
A new Omnibus survey of more than 1,000 adults
released by the Alzheimer’s Association revealed that
Americans are as afraid of becoming an Alzheimer
caregiver as they are of getting the disease itself.
On October 5, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton
(D-NY), Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Kit Bond (R-
MO) joined the Association at a press conference
in Washington, DC in urging Congress to pass the
Ronald Reagan Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Act of
2004, which would provide assistance and tax relief
to caregivers.
The Reagan Breakthrough Act would:
• Increase federal funding for research
• Provide relief for caregivers by increasing the
availability of respite care services
• Establish a $3,000 caregiver tax credit to help
pay for medications, home health care, adult
day care and respite care and provide an abovethe-line
deduction for long-term care insurance
premiums
• Increase funding for the National Family
Caregiver Support Program
“Both the report and the survey point to the
tremendous need for increased support for
caregivers,” said Sheldon Goldberg, president and
CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association. “Our
report shows that Alzheimer caregivers have a
disproportionately heavier burden than other
caregivers, due to the number of hours spent
providing care, the duration of time they give care,
and the difficulty of the tasks they perform, all of
which leads to an increase in unmet needs and
personal sacrifice.”
“As a nation, we rely on family caregivers. Although
caregiving is certainly rewarding, it can also result in
substantial emotional and physical strain and financial
hardship, which passage of the Reagan Breakthrough
Act will help alleviate,” said Senator Hillary Rodham
Clinton, co-chair of the Congressional Taskforce on
Alzheimer’s disease and co-sponsor of the Reagan
Breakthrough Act. “Congress must also pursue a
comprehensive, integrated healthcare system for
people with chronic diseases such as dementia to
better support the caregiver.”
Be Ready for Doctor Visits
How often have you left a doctor’s office and realized
that you forgot to ask an important question, omitted
mentioning one of the medications you take or simply left
out an important symptom you recently noticed?
Partnering with Your Doctor, a program offered by the
Alzheimer’s Association, hopes to help prevent these
scenarios. The program assists people with memory loss
and their loved ones in receiving the best possible health
care through improved cooperation with their physicians.
The program offers specific tools and strategies to improve
communication and understanding, covering these critical
topics:
1
2
3
4
6
How to communicate effectively with a physician
How to prepare for and maximize time during a doctor
visit by using care, medication and appointment logs
How to strengthen the partnership with the physician
How to lower stress and ensure the best health care
possible
Examples
Change in Symptoms Description
For people with Alzheimer’s and those who help in their
care, doctor visits are critical. The more information you can
provide the physician, the better he or she can evaluate the
disease’s progress. Use the following checklist to make sure
you’re well-prepared for your next doctor visit.
Bring all medications, both prescription and over-thecounter
(vitamins, aspirin, etc.)
Bring a record of changes in the health, memory or mood
of the person with Alzheimer’s. Be specific about when a
change first occurs and when and how often it happens.
Bring a list of your questions about medications, symptoms,
what to expect, treatments you’ve heard about or any other
issues.
Bring a small notebook and pen. Take notes during the
visit if you’re concerned about remembering everything the
doctor tells you.
Health, e.g., pain or illness “Bob complains of pain in his lower back
almost every day. This started about three weeks
ago and has slowly gotten worse.”
Memory “Bob seems really confused a lot lately. He forgot
how to get home from the store yesterday.”
Mood, e.g., restlessness, hearing things, “Bob isn’t sleeping at night. He cries often and is
hitting screaming, sadness, crying, strange obviously upset about something. This started
about ideas a month ago and keeps getting worse.”

Save the Date! Memories in

“enfermos”? ¡No! ¿Y es cierto que al envejecernos
debemos esperar tener fallas de la memoria a causa de la
edad? ¡No!
A medida
sangre
• Alimente su cerebro – coma comidas
ricas en antioxidantes como espinaca,
brócoli, pimentones rojos, cebolla,
maíz, pasas, fresas, naranjas, uvas
rojas, y cerezas. Otras comidas son
ricas en los ácidos grasosos Omega
3 y la vitamina E -- el salmón, las
sardinas, la trucha, el atún, aceites de
plantas como canola, zapallo, y soya,
y almendras y nueces mariposas.
• Ejercite su cuerpo y su cerebro. Haga
ejercicio físico, tome una clase,
converse, lea, haga acertijos. ¿Sabe
que uno de los mejores tipos de
ejercicio físico que también ejercita el
cerebro es el baile?
The Basics of Alzheimer’s Disease
If you are concerned about your own memory, someone who has
memory problems, or someone who has been formally diagnosed
with Alzheimer’s disease, the following programs are designed to help
you.
The Alzheimer’s Association recommends that those who are new
to the disease take one of these basic programs in order to develop a
foundation and before continuing on with Meeting the Challenges of
Caregiving educational series. The programs are designed for those in
the early stages of the disease. The Association offers several program
formats to choose from with varying time commitments.
Here are some of the questions that will
be answered in these programs:
What is dementia?
What is normal memory loss?
How will I, as a caregiver, keep
a person with Alzheimer’s
disease safe?
How do I get a good diagnosis?
As a newly diagnosed person
with Alzheimer’s disease,
how will I adjust? How
long will I be able to drive?
All About Alzheimer’s
Who should attend: the general public,
those concerned about loved ones with
memory loss, or if you are experiencing
memory loss yourself.
This is a one-hour general information
session for anyone interested in learning
about the difference between normal
memory loss due to aging and memory
loss associated with dementia. You will
learn about the Alzheimer’s disease
process and resources available for those
with Alzheimer’s and their families and
caregivers.
Getting Started: When the
Diagnosis is Alzheimer’s
Who should attend: designed for
caregivers or family members of
people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or
dementia.
This full-day program is designed for
busy family members, professional and
volunteer caregivers, and friends of
those with dementia. You will learn
the basics about the disease, handling
daily living challenges, preparing for the
progression of the disease, and behavioral
and communication issues. Also covered
is information about Durable Medical
Power of Attorney.
Who should attend: Individuals formally
diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or
dementia and their caregiver.
is designed for people with early
Alzheimer’s and their caregiver to help
them understand the diagnosis and how
to begin planning for the future. Together
they will gain an understanding of the
disease and the common changes that
will occur. They will learn key strategies
for living with Alzheimer’s disease that
will enrich their lives. (Orientation to
Meeting the Challenges of Caregiving
These programs are a wonderful
source of information and answers
for family members and caregivers
to help cope with some of the more
complex issues that arise throughout
the disease. These programs answer the
most frequently asked questions and
concerns that family and caregivers
typically deal with. All of our offices
offer these programs on a rotating basis.
The Challenges of Caregiving series is
designed for those in the middle to late
stages of the disease.
If you don’t see a program that addresses
your immediate needs, please let us
know so we can add it to our program
offerings. Or, if you see something
you like that’s not offered in your
community, call us so we can add it to
the schedule.
Here are some questions that will be
addressed in these programs.
LEGAL AND FINANCIAL
Do I need an elderlaw attorney?
How do I take over managing the
finances?
CAREGIVER CHALLENGES
How will I keep a person with the
disease safe?
As a new caregiver, what do I need
to know?
What kind of communication and
behavior challenges will we face as
the disease progresses?
MEDICAL AND RESEARCH
How does Medicare and Medicaid
work?
What are the medications for
Alzheimer’s patients and how do
they work?
Are there new medications coming
out?
CONTINUUM OF CARE OPTIONS
Does a person with Alzheimer’s
have to move into a nursing
home?
How do I determine if an assisted
living facility or nursing home is
the right one?
What does it mean to be a
caregiver for a person in a care
facility?
For Programs In your Community, Please See “Family Resource Programs”
SAVVY CAREGIVER PROGRAM
Caring for someone with
Alzheimer’s disease is a specialty
requiring specific skills and an
attitude that contributes to the
well being of both the caregiver
and the person with the disease.
This program enables caregivers
to develop a sense of control and
mastery within the caregiving
role. Most people involved in
care do it out of family love
and obligation but have no
training in how to effectively
handle the challenges of this
enormous job. Savvy Caregiving
comes complete with a caregiver
manual and CD-ROM to help
participants learn the critical tasks
in caregiving.
disease in Colorado and another
124,000 people providing their
Alzheimer’s disease live at home.
The goal of the Memory Café is to
provide much needed socialization
in the lives of families affected by
Alzheimer’s disease.
“This is a wonderful way to reach
families and caregivers who may not
A Big Thank You
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all participants
and supporters of this year’s Colorado Memory Walk.
With your help a record $937,000 was raised!
At 17 walk sites, a record number of walkers came together to support 62,000 Coloradoans living with Alzheimer’s disease.
Memory Walk is our largest fundraising event and helps raise awareness about Alzheimer’s. Funds raised help to increase our
services and programs statewide and enable us to reach even more of those in need of our support.
Thank you to our Teams and Team Captains! Many of you held fundraising events throughout the year and the effort you
gave to Memory Walk speaks of your dedication. Team captains will be receiving periodical Memory Walk updates. Call us
to be included in these mailings.
Thank you to our Memory Walk sponsors. In addition to your nancial support, many teamed up and joined us at our
walks. We are especially grateful for the outstanding support from our Statewide Presenting Sponsors, Life Care Centers of
America and Life Care at Home. Life Care Centers of America has been with us from our rst Memory Walk in 1989.
Online registration was a huge success! Many of you used coloradomemorywalk.org to communicate with your team
and to send emails across the country. Contributions came from the Virgin Islands, Mexico, and Europe. Watch for new
user-friendly improvements to the website next year.
Media sponsors help spread the word. We’d like to thank all the local media sponsors for supporting our cause. Special
thanks to CBS 4 - our TV partner, for being instrumental in publicizing Memory Walk across the state.
Jake Plummer, Quarterback,Denver Broncos and the Jake Plummer Foundation. The Jake Plummer Foundation has made
the Alzheimer’s Association one of the local non-prots they support. We thank Jake Plummer for supporting our Chapter
and are proud to have such a wonderful advocate for our cause.

SUPPORT GROUPS
Listings by County
If someone you love is
suffering from Alzheimer’s
disease, there is something
you can do to help them
and yourself. Plan to visit
an Alzheimer’s Association
Support Group this month.
There are no costs or
commitments to attend
regularly, just a family of
friends who care.
All groups meet once a
month according to the
day, time and location as
listed. Due to occasional
changes in schedules,
you are encouraged
to directly contact the
group facilitator, or you
may call 1-800-864-4404
or 303-813-1669 for
additional information.
The Alzheimer’s Association
requests that service
providers, students and
product representatives
refrain from attending
support groups sponsored
by the Association. The
purpose of the support
group is for family members
to share with one another in
a confidential setting.
The Alzheimer’s Association would like to recognize the very special volunteers who
consistently devote their time to help our organization run smoothly. We couldn’t manage
without these fantastic team players.
The Denver office is fortunate to have these volunteers
come weekly; they are administrative assistants, Dennis
Fitzpatrick, Heinke Reitzig, Su Coursen, Bill Lewis,
Debbie Nigbor, Jack Markey, Liz O’Malley, and Barb
Turano.
In Greeley, Connie Clark helps with the Sterling Memory
Walk, one of three walks in that region. She helps find
sponsors and is a Team Captain. She does it for her dad
who had Alzheimer’s and her mom.
Jill Suazo in Pueblo volunteers weekly doing accounting
projects as well as assisting with special events. She
Development
Meet Annuitant Lois Keller
Lois Keller of El Paso County, Colorado’s 82 years old and contributes to several different
charities. Lois’s core motive for giving to the Alzheimer’s Association is that her late
husband, Col. John C. Keller, had Alzheimer’s disease.
Lois is involved with the Association because she sees both a need and a benet. She
and her husband attended many workshops and a support group. It gives Lois pleasure
to introduce her friends to the Association because of the support she and her husband
received during the course of the disease.
Lois recently decided to establish a Charitable Gift Annuity. The Charitable Gift Annuity
helps her save on taxes and gives her income for life. With the income she receives she can
plan special activities with her granddaughter or donate to the Association’s Memorial Fund
or Memories in the Making art program.
Lois is “so happy to be able to help in this way.” The process of establishing an Alzheimer’s
Association Charitable Gift Annuity is easy. For information, please call Doña Dodson at
303/813-1669.
A Plan That Gives You Regular Payments For Life
Today you can help battle Alzheimer’s disease and, at the
same time, provide a measure of nancial security for your
self or a loved one by establishing a Charitable Gift Annuity.
A Charitable Gift Annuity provides you xed payments for
life, with the rate of return determined by your age at the
time the annuity is established - a high at 11.3%. It also
allows for signicant tax savings.
28
But most importantly, though a Charitable Gift Annuity,
you’ll provide a gift to ght Alzheimer’s and bring us one
step closer to ending this devastating disease. Here’s how it
works for one couple, both 70 years old, who decided to
put $10,000 into a Charitable Gift Annuity. Sam and Patricia
now receive a xed, partially tax-free quarterly payment of
$147.50 for the rest of their lives.
They also benet from a one-time charitable tax deduction
of $1,878, and, because they began their annuity with a gift
of appreciated stock, the capital gains tax due on the sale of
securities was reduced. When both have departed this life,
then and only then, the Alzheimer’s Association will receive
the balance remaining as a gift.
If you feel a Charitable Gift Annuity is the right choice for
you, please call Doña Dodson at 303-813-1669 for your
very own condential Personalized Gift Annuity Prole,
tailored to the amount you wish to give.
