PREMIER BDi LangtonFAVOURITE SONS, OLD AND NEWYears of loyal service, camaraderie, personalmilestones and premiership glory mayentrench a man to his club, but it doesn’tnecessarily make him a leader. Or a strategicmind. Or a stirring motivator. Buckley knowsit’s not all beer and skittles, Ratten may bebreathing a little easier but it hasn’t happenedovernight. Oh it’s a ruthless game, this playingfor your mates business. Chris Scott took hispedigree elsewhere and struck immediate gold.Premier B sees six new coaches this year and aclear message from clubs: we want success,we want promotion …and we want it now. There is a common trend of replenishmentand revitalisation, plenty of youth, a steadyingcore of experience and a sprinkling return ofthe wise old stager. Here’s a snapshot of wherewe finished last year together with off-seasonmovements.Ajax – Premiers Prem CBernie Sheehy’s boys surprised with asmashing grand final victory, but a numberwill be travelling this year; expect only guestappearances from Routman, Steinberg andothers. Pinch-hitting ruckman Adam Spencer-Laitt will be missed, but Jason Samuel andDanny Freed are looking likely and JasonTendler arrives from Balwyn to stir up a bit ofJacka chatter.Werribee Districts – Runners Up Prem CIn a decade of Amateur footy the Tigers havemoved from D4 to Premier B with coach KirkNorton steering a swag of talented juniorsfor the past six years. The loss of Zachariahmedallist Cam Lee (Collegians) and prolificforward Nathan Black (EDFL) will be sorely felt, but plenty of class returns in the guise of JoshBellegante and Alex Taylor.Old Haileybury – 10 th PremierThe Bloods’ forward line gets an injection fromJohnny Nicolopoulos (DLS) and Nick Gooda(Mornington) while defender Corey Millardreturns from Collingwood’s VFL list. Followingthe club’s misfire in Premier, newly installedcoach (and past premiership captain) DarrenSeccull has adopted a youth focus, althoughbrother Mark may go again. Son Brede willwear the guernsey (if and) when released fromthe Pies.Old Melburnians – 9 th PremierFormer Demon Nathan Brown takes theRedleg reins after a stint at Cheltenham, withlots of exuberant Grammar youth replacing anoutgoing dozen of varying levels, includingrookie-listed Sam Dunell (St Kilda) and TomCampbell (Bulldogs). Brown has implementeda hugely physical pre-season program to lift theoverall fitness of the group.Beaumaris – 8 thAn undeniable off-season horribilis for coachMifsud will be a faint memory as he pondersjust WHO will fill the gaping defensive holeleft by retiring club favourite Mark ‘Dougie’Ensor. On the upside, the Sharks welcomeback 2010 grand final lynchpin Tommy Deanfrom overseas and Wilba Murton looks set fora stellar year.Uni Blacks – 7 thThe Students have a new Master in 2006 Mooremedallist and two-time winner of the BrendanKeilar medal, Matt Kempton. The Vultures are back in Premier C, afterclaiming the flag in Division 1. The whispersaround the league however, are that they are farfrom satisfied with that win and are expectingto hit the ground running at the higher level.Zeke McCarthy was vice captain of the Big Vside and was joined in the team by Mitch Grantand Paul Groves. It has been an offseason of change for theartists formerly known as Old Essendon. In amove that is sure to strengthen their bond withthe school, the club is now known as PEGS andhas made a switch to the traditional schoolguernsey . Trent Cummings will be at the helmagain in 2012 and there is an air of anticipationover at Wright Road that it could be a big year.Rupo will be very hopeful that their steadyinflux of recruits will be enough to offset theloss of some prime movers. Still there usuallyseems to be an abundance of talented underagersready to step up and this should ensurethat the trip to Salesian will not be a happyhunting ground for Rupo’s opponents. So, on to the predictions. I think Old Camberwellwill get home (just) against Mazenod; the Roysin to upset the Vultures’ flag unfurling; Marcellinto knock of their old foes, PEGS; Banyule tomake a successful start back in Premier C; andRupo to outlast the Rovers.PREMIER C 2011 GRAND FINALS PREMIER C RESERVEWerribee 2.1 5.3 6.5 7.9 (51)Ajax 7.5 11.7 17.9 19.11 (125)WerribeeGoals: C. DIVISION 1Darren DawsonALL ABOARD!!The fine-tuning has all been completed. Andnow the Division 1 train is about to leave thestation. Four new teams are on board (Ormond,MHSOB, Glen Eira and St. John’s), but no-onereally knows where this journey will end. Theonly certainty is that, as of this morning, allten teams were on an equal footing. However, come 4:45pm this evening, five of thoseteams will have stolen a march on the othersand be one win closer to a finals berth. Fromexperience, practice-matches are never really ahugely reliable form guide. Plenty of tinkeringtakes place, not all players are available, andit’s a last chance for coaches to check out newplayers and try a few different strategies.I am excited about what this section promises,as there appears to be plenty of teams “onthe up”. On that basis alone, I expect thatcompetition for the top four will be fierce. Lastseason’s beaten finallists North Old Boys-St.Patrick’s (3 rd in ’11) and Whitefriars (4 th ) willboth be eager to turn the pain of Septemberdefeat into something more positive come thepointy end of the year. Really, it is a no-brainerthat both NOBs and Friars, both with excellentdepth and returning coaches Richard Peoplesand Theo Vlahos at their respective helms, will be at the forefront of teams vying forpromotion.Williamstown CYMS (5 th ) last season missedout on finals action by percentage only. Despitethe loss of a couple of key players, a focus onfitness during pre-season under new coach Ian“Chops” Rickman should ensure that the CYsare better placed to run games out. Pre-seasonwins against Anglesea and Ormond mean thatexpectations are high at the Fearon, as are thoseof their fierce rivals the Pirates. Peninsula (6 th )was surprisingly lack-lustre for long periods lastseason, and this ultimately cost them a place inthe finals. A strong run home was not enoughto make up for ground lost early on, so I wouldthink that they will hit the ground running fromthe get-go.After starting 2011 like a house on fire, OldGeelong (7 th ) ran out of steam just as quicklyand had a most disappointing second half of theseason. With some solid practice-match formunder their belt under new coach Frank Dunell(a familiar name in Ammo footy circles), look forthe Oggers to be much more competitive thisyear. As the old tune goes, for Old Mentonians(8 th ) the only way is up. The Panthers are lookingto “restore the roar” following a horror seasonwhich was somewhat salvaged by a fightingwin in the final home-and-away match of theseason. A talented young list could translateinto more wins than losses. For me, the unknowns are the new teams.Ormond won six matches in Premier C lastyear, and had the sixth best percentage. Talkabout being stiff to be relegated! Rumour hasit there has been a clean-out at Gunn Reserve, and depth may be tested. MHSOB will belooking to bounce straight back to the morefamiliar premier grades, but the Unicorns willdefinitely not find the going any easier thisseason. DIVISION 2Rich HummerstonA DANGEROUS GAMEAs Rex Hunt once voiced, a closed mouth catchesno foot but doesn’t pay the bills either. Orsomething like that. So here are my predictionsfor the season upcoming. And for those who maydisagree, don’t get mad, get even. As someoneelse once said, the last shall be first . . .Bulleen TemplestoweAfter a lamentable 2011 in Division 1, the Bullantswill unquestionably be looking to improve ontheir solitary win from the seasons past. Boastingan impressive 100% winning record in this yearspre-season, including a resounding victoryagainst the highly touted Banyule Bears, all signsare pointing to a far more enjoyable time at TedAjani this season, finishing 7-9.Old ParadiansJoining Bulleen in a step down in class this season,Old Paradians, too, should find the going a toucheasier in Division 2. While 2011 yielded marginallybetter results than their demoted counterparts,(4 wins) the demotion has left a sour taste inthe mouths of the Paradian faithful and willundeniably be the catalyst behind their predicitedsuccess in 2012. With coach David Boundy at thehelm and coupled with some extensive recruiting,I’ve got Old Paradians finishing 1 st 1-3 at seasonsend.South Melbourne DistrictsHistory tells us, when a club remains tight lippedthrough summer, they usually have somethingto hide. (Did someone say Fevola?) If the lack ofinformation coming from Lindsay Hassett this preseasonis any indication of South Melbourne’s formthis year, the Swans will be looking to improve onlast year’s 6 wins. While the Fevola allegations areunfounded, South Melbourne’s unrelenting spiritis not, I have them finishing 5-7.Eltham Old CollegiansComing off a successful 2011 campaign andboasting arguably one of the most significanthome ground advantages in the VAFA. Simalarlyto South Melbourne, Eltham have kept their cardsclose to their chest this season but providingthey kept Sabastian Ciavola in cotton wooland adequately hydrated over the summermonths, there should be no reason to bein finalscontention. I’ll pencil them to finish in 4-6.St Mary’s SalesianThe Saints administrators have had a busysummer, recruiting from far and wide to bolstertheir stocks coming off a less than satisfactoryseason in 2011. After narrowly avoiding relegationlast season, SMS on the back of some decent preseasonform are poised to catapult themselvesupwards. I’m predicting 7-9.Therry PenolaShowing debatably the strongest pre-seasonform, and a 2011 season that netted a preliminaryfinal appearance, Therry have the goods to be theside to beat in 2012. Add the arduous trip downthe Tullamarine for most sides; they shouldn’t losemany games at home. While I’m pencilling themin between 2 and 4 , and anything could happencome finals time.Monash GryphonsAfter clawing their way to a Grand Final from 5 thposition last year, Monash have the undeniablespirit, culture and the tenacity to mix it with thebig boys. Time will tell if their “stocky” midfieldhave the talent to mix it with the best of division2, but with the likes of Munro, Wells, Baxter andCherien, I’m predicting they can, finishing 4-6 atseason’s end not out of the equation.La Trobe UniversityAfter missing out on finals action by a meredraw last season, the Students will be throwingeverything at Division 2 in 2012. clubs who have chosen to implement protectionto their pre-season recruits similar to the codes fornuclear warheads, I’m a touch hesitant to make aprediction. Nonetheless, I’ll go with 5-8Emmaus St Leo’sUnfortunately in all ladder predictions, theremust be the Cellar Dwellers of the season. WhileI enjoy giving out the term as much receiving as aTetanus shot, my eyes are on Emmaus St Leo’s. Myprediction is not a statement about their list butrather the competition they will be pitted against.Prahran-AssumptionRounding out the Division 2 competition, it’sPrahran-Assumption, the undisputed championsof Division 3 in 2011. Boasting a playing listprobably more suited to Premier, I see it inevitablethat the 4-Blues join Old Paradians at the topof the table this year. The twin towers in PeterCristoforo and Adam Sleight to kick 150 goalsbetween them.Looking towards opening weekend, I’m goingwith Monash over the Swans, Old Paradians totouch up St Mary’s, while Therry will send EmmausSt Leo back down the Tullamarine without anypoints. Eltham will take the chocolates over theStudents away and Prahran to account for theBullants easily. To assist me in making my outlandish statementsmore accurate, I would be more than happy toreceive any match reports, milestones and praiseto rich@scoopon.com.au.DIVISION 2 2011 GRAND FINALS DIVISION 2 RESERVEGlen Eira 2.4 9.8 12.13 18.20 (128)St Johns OC 5.2 5.6 11.7 14.8 (92)Glen EiraGoals: G. DIVISION 3Nick WynneNEW SEASON, NEW OPPORTUNITIESCass McCombs sang “Love thine enemy, buthate their lack of sincerity”. I can almost assureyou that no coach will be using this quote asa way to ‘rev’ their team up this weekend. Thatbeing said, I feel it wise to have a little bit of lovefor thine enemy come round one.Aquinas v St Francis XavierAquinas Coach John Le Grand was so obviouslyannoyed with his teams performance lastyear, that he put them through a vigorouspre-season that included a Tactical AdvantageBootcamp. Rumour has it he deliberatelyscheduled it on the hottest day in February.I expect Aquinas to be a threat this year withCaptain Nick Morrison-Story leading the way.2011 was an extraordinary year for the X-Men,who finally won their first senior premiership. They should be strong again with not muchmovement in their camp. However the stepup could prove difficult and I imagine it will betoday. Bloods too strong.Elsternwick v Richmond CentralElsternwick were a bit out of tune last year, just missing the finals. I’m tipping this yearwill be different. Declan Healy has had a handin recruiting a number of Irish lads to help onand off the field. The nice people at The WickHotel and Bistro have informed me they arestruggling to cope with the unprecedentedspike in Guinness consumption. To add to thisfollically challenged young gun William ‘Skull’Christian is looking to have a break-out year.Richmond Central had an impressive 2011 andwhilst there have been seven retirements in all, including former skipper Sean ‘Irish’ O’Connor, their defeat in the Division 4 grand final willno doubt whet the appetite for some similaraction in Division 3. New recruits Shane Lowry(Golden Square) and Nino Bucci (Mt. Pleasant)will try their best to fill the void. I’m backingElsternwick to come away with the suburbanbeverages today.Ivanhoe v Albert ParkAlbert Park has made the finals three yearsrunning now and will be a major challengercome September. The Falcons will be lookingfor a big win as to enjoy their season launch.I hear DJ David Guetta will be special guest atthe lavish event.Ivanhoe is another interesting prospect thisyear, with a couple of solid wins in the lead up toround one it will be ready to rumble. AlthoughI can’t see Leigh Cole’s men making the finalsthis year, they will definitely be around themark. Albert Park to win this battle of the birds.Hawthorn v UHS-VUNew coach Rick Barkla is injecting plenty ofenthusiasm down at Rathmines Reserve. Newrecruit Scott Timmins will add to the sensationaldepth the Hawks possess. For some, picking theHawks B&F winner this far out would be nearimpossible. However, not so for Luke ‘Buckles’Barkla who admits it will be “probably me”.David “Fatty” Wallace steps up as senior Coachfor UHS-VU this year, and the fat man will havehis hands full. are expected to build on solid seasons last yearand will need to if UHS-VU is to be competitiveagain this year. Hawks to swoop.Power House v Yarra ValleyPower House will be trying hard to stamp theirauthority onto Division 3 after a middle ofthe range 2011. I am excited to see how theyprogress this year. However I am predicting thatthey may be the victim of four very strong sidesbeing introduced into the Division and falter. Here’s hoping that new coaches Tony Miller andJeff Scotland can prove me wrong. You could forgive Yarra Valley for taking it easyover the pre-season after a solid year, but itwas not the case, in fact quite the opposite.Ironically the Bushrangers lived up to theirname when Coach Drew took them on a 50kmsprint/hike through ‘Kelly Country’. Ross Littleimpressed on the hike and will be looking tobring that form into round one. Yarra Valley towin, photo for second possibly Power House.Kew v Old WestbourneKew will be hoping to make it a grizzly openingfor the relegated Old Westbourne. With IanAitken at the helm looking to keep the “Kewflame burning” there are high expectations forthe Bears. Six figure men Aaron Carmen and VCMichael Cochrane will be pivotal if the Bears areto snaffle a finals birth.Old Westbourne had a horror season last year, but with Coach Roger Hand at the controls theyseem a much improved and more confidentcollective. There are a number of impressivekids that have stepped up over the pre-seasonincluding Harley Tunnecliffe and Tim Davidsonthat look to be bringing back the wonder years.Kew to open their account at home.DIVISION 3 2011 GRAND FINALS DIVISION 3 RESERVEPrahran Assumption 4.3 10.7 16.7 25.9 (159)Monash Gryphons 4.4 6.7 8.12 12.14 (86)Prahran Assumption Goals: A. DIVISION 4Josh GabelichHERE WE GO AGAINWell, here we are again. The dawn of a newfootball season is upon us and it looks likeDivision Four might once again bring plenty ofexcitement this winter. With the nature of thiscompetition seeing the two top teams fromlast year stepping up the Ammo’s ladder intoDivision 3 and two teams falling down, there’ssure to be a hotly contested battle at the top.The two teams coming down, West Brunswickand Mt Lilydale will be tough to beat as theyfight to get back into the higher grade, whilstSwinburne Uni and the Eley Park Sharks will belooking to build on their impressive form lastyear and try to win the ultimate prize. Let’s takea closer look at the teams.BOX HILL NORTH: (Last year – 9th) Despite onlywinning five games in2011 the Demons showed plenty of promisethroughout games, however their inconsistencyultimately lead to them finishing the season insecond last place. With a new jumper beinglaunched in the off-season and some newrecruits heading to Elgar Park, 2012 couldprovide Box Hill North with a more competitiveoutput this season. Finishing range: 6 – 9CHADSTONE: (Last year – Wooden Spoon)Winless in season 2011 means one thing forthe Synners this year – they can only go up. Atleast that will be the plan. The coaching staff atChadstone put a line through2011 as soon as it ended and have put the workin on the track over the summer to ensure thatthis season is a lot more prosperous. Finishingrange: 8 – 10MT LILYDALE OC: (Last year – Wooden Spoon,Division Three) The Rams have spent the hotmonths working hard on rectifying the faultsthat lead to the poor season in 2011. Only fivewins in the home and away season resultedin them taking home the wooden spoon andjoining Division Four. Mt Lilydale Old Collegianswill be moving heaven and earth to force theirway out of the VAFA’s cellar dweller. Finishingrange: 1 – 4NORTH BRUNSWICK: (Last year – 8th) Thingsare changing down at Allard Park or ‘The Tip’as it is more fondly referred to. A new jumperand new logo have brought with them highexpectations for 2012. One thing is for sure;winning only six out of eighteen games againwon’t be acceptable. The offseason has seenseveral new signings joining the Bulls and witharch rivals, West Brunswick, being relegatedto Division Four the emphasis has been lifted.Finishing Range: 3 – 6POINT COOK: (Last year – 7th) The word fromDunnings Rd is that actions will speak louderthan words this season. Another mid-rangefinish will not be the answer this year as theBulldogs are firmly aiming for a finals berthcome the business end of the season. The teamfrom the far west will be hoping to improvetheir ability to use their home ground to theiradvantage and make it as hostile as possible forvisiting away teams making the large trip downthe highway. handy recruits over the off season and could beone of the big improvers in season 2012 if theycan improve their troublesome goal kickingefficiency. Finishing Range: 3 – 5WEST BRUNSWICK: (Last year – 11th, Division 3)The magpies have come down from the highergrade and will be desperate to return to formthis season after last year’s disastrous output.Their demotion sets up a tantalising derbyagainst local rivals North Brunswick. Anythingless than promotion back into Division 3 willbe a failure for the black and white in 2012.Finishing range: 1 – 3ELEY PARK: (Last year – 4th) One of the moreexciting sides running around in this division, the Sharks will be aiming to build on theirimpressive 2011 campaign. The Box Hill basedteam narrowly missed out on the doublechance last year on percentage. Another finalsappearance must be the goal for the Sharks in2012. Finishing range: 2 – 5SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY: (Last year – 3rd) Afterfinishing second at the end of the home andaway season in 2011 the Razorbacks couldn’tcontinue their form into September and bowedout of the finals in straight sets. A summerspent dwelling over the missed opportunityshould see the Hawthorn side frothing at theopportunity to make amends for last years meltdown. Finishing range: 1 – 4MANNINGHAM COBRAS: (Last year – 6th)The Cobra’s inconsistency in 2011 hurt themdeeply and would surely have been a strongfocus over the summer. A string of new namesjoining the Cobra’s have many predicting animproved season is imminent. BIG VBIG V TRIUMPHS OVEREASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUEThe Big V triumphed over the Eastern FootballLeague by 12 points in a tough contest atBayswater on 1 April, reinforcing the reputationof the VAFA as the most successful representativeoutfit in our great game. After struggling to kick straight early and thenlosing momentum, the Ammo team appearedlikely to finish second, but with great determinationand resilience, the visitors thundered home to amemorable victory.Coach Simon Lethlean, a former Big V captain whohad worn the famous jumper in many importantvictories, praised the efforts, character andresilience of his team.Julian Rowe was named best afield, while his OldCarey teammates Cam Howat, Lachy McQueen-Miscamble and newcomer James Rimingtonshowed plenty of class too. NOBSPC newcomerMatt Firman also showed polish. In the final term, needing big efforts from theforward line, Andrew Merrington and MattHandley re-asserted their influence, while NickSautner broke Eastern hearts with two precisionkicks as the clock went into time-on.Ben Dowd and Tommy Simpson flew the flag early, getting plenty of service from John Shaw, but theEFL kicked the first goal of the game. And whilethe Easterners displayed confidence and movedthe ball with aplomb and hurried help back tocombat the VAFA’s aerial threat, they never brokethe backs of the Big V team.Mistakes wee made by the visitors, gifting a coupleof easy goals, but the spirit never waned. JackBull, playing his first senior game in the jumperand the seasoned Ryan Colbert came into thegame as coach Lethlean demanded quicker ballmovement. In the end, it seemed that only oneteam was running and while the home team cameback from a goal down late in the piece, Sautnerstrutted his stuff again to seal an emphatic victory.EFL 5.2 8.5 9.8 10.10 (70)VAFA 2.6 3.11 6.13 11.16 (82)Goals: Nick Sautner 3, Ryan Colbert, JamesRimington, Andrew Merrington, Julain Rowe, JackBull, Matt Handley, Cam Howat, Matt FirmanBest: Julian Rowe, Lachlan McQueen-Miscamble,Matt Firman, Ben Dowd, Trent Zimbachs, JohnShaw34 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2012

UNDER 19Another season of U19 football begins today. Forso many, it is the first toe in the VAFA waters, thefirst venture in what may become a long careerwith an Ammo club. We look back ten years to seethose names on U19 playing lists and we can ask“where are they now?” of most. But a significantnumber are still with us, stars for their club andin the Big V, doing well in a profession, businessor trade. Ben Carboni of Caulfield Grammarians,Leigh Fletcher of Hampton Rovers, Jack Healy ofOld Trinity spring to mind.NORTH: AJAX; Emmaus St Leo;s; Ivanhoe; LaTrobe University; MHSOB; Old Geelong; TherryPenola; Williamstown CYMSSOUTH: Beaumaris ; De La Salle; Hampton Rovers ;Monash Blues; Parkdale VulturesPeninsula OB; St Bedes / Mentone Tigers; StMary’s SalesianIn recent years, De La Salle has consistentlybeen the power club at this level. Old Xaverianshas been nipping at its heels and last year wonthe U19 Premier flag as well as the U19 Southpremiership. However, U19 football can changequickly, with players graduating to senior ranks, being lured elsewhere or retiring through lack ofsenior pathways. Sadly, in recent years, more thanone club has won a premiership at U19 level yetfailed to field a team the following season. In 2011, North 1 and South 1 became Sections2 and 3 in the mid-year, which reduced theincidence of blow-outs. Accordingly, this yearthe competition comprises three sections gradedaccording to strength and two according togeography. This is how it looks, with my stronger possibilitiesin bold:PREMIER: Beaumaris; De La Salle; Fitzroy; OldMelburnians; Old Scotch; Old Xaverians; StBede’s/Mentone Tigers; St Bernard’s; UniversityBlacks; University BluesSECTION 2: Caulfield Grammarians; MarcellinOC; Old Brighton; Old CareyOld Haileybury; Old Trinity; St Kevin’s; WerribeeDistrictsSECTION 3: Collegians; Mazenod OC; NorthernBlues; Old Camberwell; Old Xaverians; Ormond;PEGS; St Bernard’s42 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2012

UNDER 18Changing football priorities has left the U18competition a little short on teams, thoughthere is no doubt that this age level is a veryimportant part of the strategy of some clubs.Once again, we expect some fearsomecompetition among the VAFA’s youngestplayers. With a bye built-in, there is anopportunity for players to test themselves athigher levels, whether U19, Reserves or for thevery best, seniors. The clubs competing this year are mainlyfrom the west/north-west, a hot-bed of juniorfootball. However, watch for St Mary’s Salesian, who have had great numbers at training in thepre-season and hope to get off to a good start. The seven teams are: Oakleigh; Rupertswood;St Bernard’s; St Mary’s Salesian; UHS-VU /Flemington; Werribee Districts; WilliamstownCYMSUNDER 18 GRAND FINALWilliamstown CYMS 0.2 2.7 5.9 11.10 (76)Rupertswood 5.4 6.5 11.11 15.12 (102)Williamstown CYMS Goals: N.
