D4 GOLDEN BEARS With 10 returning lettermen to build a solid nucleus for the 2010 season, the Golden Bear boys’ track team will look for more success this year. The Golden Bears return four state qualifiers that ran in four different events at state. Bishop Garrigan finished 11th at the Class 1A state meet last year with 22 points. The black-and-gold will again be lead by Head Coach Marty Wadle and will be assisted by Dave Schnurr and Deacon Bob Larson. “We have 10 returning lettermen which is a good place to start to put a good line-up together,” said Bishop Garrigan Coach Wadle. “We will hopefully be very competitive in the relay events. We will have to step up to get some people to step us and fill in to replace the guys we lost. “Brett is a returning state place winner and we expected another good year from him. We are going to need to replace some points in the field events to be competitive in that for a team title. We have pretty good numbers, including a big freshmen class this season.” Brett Capesius heads the list of 10 returning lettermen. The senior finished 10th in the 400meter dash in a time of 52.29. He ran on the 4 x 800 squad that was third in 8:22.70, the 4 x 200 relay team that placed fourth in 1:31.85 and the 4 x 400 quartet that was fourth in 3:30.59. Also returning is junior Kevin Elbert that ran on the 4 x 100 group that placed fifth in 44.62. Another junior, Jacob Behr, ran on both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 squads at state while sophomore Alex Boisjolie was a member of the 4 x 800 team. Other returning letter winners are seniors Nick Kellner, David Reding and Austin Wolf, junior Drew Magill and sophomores Daniel Gelhaus and Grant Reding. Seniors Nick Foertsch, Mark Garman, Elijah Gelhaus and Dana Miller, juniors Eric Bauman, Michael Falker, Joel Reding and Andrew Behr and sophomores Luke Eischen, Terrenze Franklin, Zach Keith, Craig Kohlhaas and Mitch Rahm are also out for track. Rounding out the team are freshmen Johnathan Berte, Elliot Boisjolie, Thomas Bradley, Andrew Eden, Matthew Falker, Adam Hamilton, Jake Kollasch, Alex Matthews, Dustin Miller, Bobby Plathe, Jake Reding, Zach Scobba and Charlie Thilges. Five athletes are gone from last year’s squad. They are state qualifiers Jack Bradley, Brain Patterson, Ben Hellman, Joe Straub along with Kyle Smith. Patterson and Bradley each qualified for three events and both Hellman and Straub qualified in one event. Bishop Garrigan will open the 2010 outdoor season on March 31 at the annual CYO meet at Storm Lake. The Golden Bears qualified for the state tournament placing fourth and won the North Central Conference tournament. Dean Capesius will again be the head coach for the black-and-gold squad. “Our outlook for the season is to be consistent both individually and as a team in scoring,” said Golden Bear Coach Capesius. “With just losing one senior and returning five lettermen, nothing less that a state title should be in this team’s grasp. “We look to accomplish what we did last year. We would like to add a few more wins for the season if we can. We have a good group of golfers coming back to lead the squad.” Five lettermen return for the black-and-gold this spring. Seniors Brandon Doughan, Bryan Berte, Jordan Springer and Mike Mergen along with junior Andrew Schiltz are the returning letter winners. Bishop Garrigan won both the sectional and district titles last year and took fourth at state with a team total of 341-343-684. The Algona Upper Des Moines Thursday, April 1, 2010 A big squad numbering 36 girls will dot the roster of the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ track team. The Golden Bears have 19 returning letter winners, including four that qualified in a pair of events at the state meet. Head Coach Greg Ahlers returns to guide the blackand-gold thinclads this spring. He will again be assisted by Daryl Kohlhaas and Mary Quinlan. “We should be strong in many areas this year,” said Bishop Garrigan Coach Ahlers. “We should be solid in the 400 hurdles and the 400’s which should be as good as or better than last year. I am not sure what will be our best relay. “We will have to wait to see what the new members can give us. Our weakness with be in the field events. We will be looking for girls to step up to these events and get us some points in the meet.” Leading the returning letter winners is senior Mackenzie Schindler, who was a member of the 4 x 400 relay quartet that placed 19th at state with a clocking of 4:19.68. Sophomores Addison Miller and Mallory Bormann each ran on that squad with Miller also finishing 13th in the 400meter hurdles in a time of 1:09.17. Senior Alyse Meyers, Last season the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ golf team returned to the top of the podium capturing the Class 1A state title and three players return off that squad. The Golden Bears finished first at the North Central Conference tournament and were second at the annual CYO tournament. The blackand-gold won both the district and regional titles before taking the state title with a team score of 700. “The girls’ road will see the absence of three seniors from last year but wereturn three letter winners from that squad,” said veteran Bishop Garrigan Coach Dean Capesius. “Our goal is to find three players to fill the void of an experienced group. “One could say we gained a year of experience this past summer with all the hard work put in to try to continue the road to hopefully another championship, our sixth in seven years. “I think the team will be determined and ready to play. Hopefully the weather will cooperate so we can find our place in the 2010 golf season.” Three letter winners will return for the Golden Bears to lead this year’s team. Juniors Laura Richter and Kelsie Berke along with sophomore Sheridan Berte are the returnees. Berte ended a great freshman year with a who ran at state in 2008, also returns after missing the 2009 season with a knee injury. Other returning letter winners are seniors Kelly Klein and Amy Rasmussen; juniors Brittany Brandt, Aimee Dahlhauser, Anna Kollasch, Nora Krahenbuhl, McKayla Loss and Katie Miller along with sophomores Emily Bell, Bethany Capesius, Lizzy Hohmeister, Abbey Reding, Alicia Richter and Shelby Schindler. Rounding out the roster is juniors Hannah Bode, Rya Krumm and Rebecca Molsberry and sophomores Cedes Forburger, Lana Larson, Jeanne McCall and Kim Schiltz. Freshmen on the squad are Sophie Behr, Erica Carlson, Amelia Golwitzer, Janet Kenyon, Chelsi Lanus, Sarah McCall, Melanie Mergen, Aubrie Meyers, Erin Reedy and Kelli Rowley. The squad lost three seniors from last season’s team. Those athletes are Kelly Rouse, Megan Hilbert and Shanna Miller, who all ran in relays and Rouse tossed the discus. Miller qualified for state in both the 400-meter hurdles and ran on the 4 x 400 team. “We will need the younger girls to contribute this spring,” said Coach Ahlers. “Obviously, we will get a boost from Erin, who placed fourth at the state cross-country meet this fall. Berke was 22nd at state with a 195 and Richter was 30th with a total of 200. Other girls looking to make the varsity squad this spring are junior Miranda Gisch, sophomore Carly Loss and freshmen Rebecca Buena Vista track in Storm Lake on March 31.
