ALGONA BULLDOGS
The Algona Bulldog boys’ track squad numbers
68 strong this season, including 17 lettermen.
The returning letter winners include nine
state qualifiers in 10 different events with three
of those events bringing home state titles.
The Bulldogs were the state runner-ups last
year in Class 3A with 51 points and were
fourth in 2008. The red-and-black also has won
both the North Central Conference and district
meets the past two seasons.
Head Coach Gregg Wellman enters his ninth
year as the head mentor of the Bulldogs. The
reigning district coach of the year will again
capably be assisted by Jim McMahon, Jason
Bradley and Chad Ahlers.
“We are very excited about the possibilities
this track season,” said Coach Wellman. “With
a strong returning group, large numbers in our
upper classes and a strong freshmen class, we
have our sights set on some high goals this
year. This will provide us with some great
depth.
“We also have a lot of key members returning
from last year’s successful team. If we can
blend the young talent with these guys, we
could have some pretty positive results this
May. Our main goal this spring is just get a little
better each day. If we can do that as a team,
I think we will be very happy with our season.”
Leading the returning state qualifiers is senior
Chad Rutledge. The UNI-bound senior won
the 800-meter run in a time of 1:54.31 along
with anchoring the state champion medley
relay in 3:31.15 and the 4 x 800 relay in
8:01.05. Rutledge was also the 400-meter dash
runner-up in a school-record clocking of 49.28
after winning the state title in that race as a
sophomore.
Junior Ryan McMahon placed third in the
3,200-meter run in 9:24.88 and was a member
of the winning 4 x 800 relay quartet. Ryan also
placed fifth in the 1,600-meter run in 4:27.74
and finished eighth in the 800-meter run in
2:00.01 at state.
Twin brother Michael was also a member of
the winning 4 x 800 relay squad along with
placing seventh in 1,600-meter run in 4:28.82.
Seniors Collin Fett and Austin Zadow were
members of the wining medley relay team and
Zadow ended up 12th at state in the long jump
with a leap of 20’ 4”.
Junior Joey Schattschneider ran on the state
champion 4 x 800 team and also ran on the 4 x
400-meter relay that placed 16th in 3:31.79.

returns a strong cast of varsity starters. The
Bulldogs went 41-17 overall last year and were
8-1 in North Central Conference duels, good
for second place in the league behind Clear
Lake.
The red-and-black finished fourth in the conference
tournament. The squad finished second
in sectional play at Spencer, advancing to the
district tournament at Carroll where they took
third, just missing a state tournament berth.
Veteran head coach Mike Ford again returns
to guide the red-and-black to another hopefully
successful campaign.
“We are really excited to start the season,”
said Ford. “We hope the weather will cooperate
better than it did this winter. We have some
holes to fill but we do return some experience
and I believe we will compete in every match.
“We gained a lot of confidence from the
great tournament run last year, just missing
state by one place. We just want to have fun, be
competitive and handle whatever the weather
does to us.”
Five lettermen will lead the red-and-black
this spring. Seniors Brad Hoskins, Alex Hagg
and Zach Plathe, junior Blair Bradley and
sophomore Chris Grether are the Bulldogs that
have varsity experience last year.
Coach Ford is hoping that seniors Alex
Kading, Nolyn Elliott or some other younger
players that saw junior varsity action will step
up their game in 2010 to help round out the

Connor McGuire.
Three members of the 4 x 200 relay quartet
that placed 14th in a time of 1:32.76 return.
Those members are seniors Fett and Zadow
along with sophomore Michael Erpelding.
Other returning lettermen are seniors Derek
Beaumier, Brandon Keller, Alex Kenne and
Dustin Rasmus. Juniors returning are Johnny
Aboud, Richard Baxter, John Etler and Alex
Wiseman.
The remaining seniors on the squad are
David Baxter, Brady Collison, Joe Cook, Paul
Elbert, Tommy Haverkamp, Josh Hollinger,
Andrew Jones, Alex Larson, Nyle Larson,
Blake Mills and Patrick Prentice.
Juniors that are out include Cane Arrowood,
Brandon Aument, Cody Combs, Royce
Boleneus, Jeff Burtnett, Joey Candelerie,
Tommy Christian, Seth Eischeid, Bryce
Hickman, Noah Hollinger, John Krause and

Three seniors graduated off last year’s golf
team. The red-and-black lost Michael Becker,
Glen Schuller and Shaun Van Munster, who all
played varsity at one point or another last year.
“We are hoping for a good finish in the
always tough North Central Conference race,”

Logan Thill, Michael Van Denhammel, Austin
Warmbeir and Zach Wiltze are the sophomores
on the roster.
Freshmen rounding out the squad are Luke

Brandon Garrett, David Hanson, Curtis
Hardeman, Kevin Illg, Jeremiah Johnson,
Jacob Kofoot, Taylor Kuper, Cole Nielsen,
Nathan Schmidt, Ben Stone, Nick Taffe,
Nathan Trenary and Michael Van Oosbree.
“We would like to develop our young athletes
and stay healthy,” said Coach Wellman.
“We would like to compete well in every meet
and would like to place in the top third of our
conference. We would also like to qualify multiple
events for the Drake Relays and state
meet along with competing for a top three finish
at state.”
Algona will open the outdoor season on
April 1 at home for the Early Bird Relays and
said Coach Ford. “I can see Clear Lake and
Bishop Garrigan being the favorites of the
league this year.”
The Bulldogs will open their season on
Tuesday, April 13 hosting Estherville-Lincoln
Central at the Algona Country Club, beginning

AHS girls’ track returns 25 letterwomen

The Algona Bulldog girls’ track
team will number 53 this season,
including eight returning state qualifiers
that competed in six different
events in 2009.
Head coaches Brian Connick and
Tong Uk Yi return for their second
year leading the red-and-black. The
pair will be assisted by Liz Bradley
and Chad Ahlers in 2010.
“Entering the 2010 season, our
strength is certainly in our numbers,”
said Coach Connick. “The fact that
we have so many girls willing to put
in the time and commitment to help
our team continue to improve is very
exciting.
“We also feel that the success that
our other programs have experience
this year (volleyball, cross-country,
basketball) is an advantage. The fact
that many of these girls have already
achieved a high level of success puts
them into a positive position right off
the bat.”
Leading the returning state qualifiers
is junior Mackenzie Siefken.
She placed sixth in the discus at state
with a toss of 116’ 10” and finished
19th in the shot put at 34’ 7”.
Three members of the 4 x 800
relay quartet that placed 19th in
10:17.96 return. Senior Emillie
Kenne along with juniors Allana
Lauck and Sarah Bierle will return.
Senior Kirsten Lipps, who ran on
that same relay at state in 2008, also
returns after missing last year with
an illness.
Sophomore Jade Simpson will
again compete in the high jump after
her jump of 4’ 10” placed the freshman
21st last spring. Classmate
Brandee Hockett placed 22nd in the
100-meter hurdles in a time of 17.09
at the blue oval.
A pair of runners will be back in
the 4 x 200 relay, which placed 22nd
in a time of 1:51.01. Senior Allison
Kajewski along Jade Simpson both
return in that event for the Bulldogs.
The 2010 Algona Bulldog girls’

this spring after a tough year in 2009.

from her girls.
“We have the potential to do well
in the conference with 19 girls out
for the team but we need to have
time on the course to get some real
practice in,” said Algona Coach
Bjustrom. “Our official golf practice
started on March 13th and will all
the snow we have had to work things
a little different.
“We have not had much course
playing time before our first meet on
April 13th. That will be here before
you know it. After that date, it is

Simpson, Alissa Zwiefel and
Hockett.
“We are fortunate to have a large
group of returning letter
winners/qualifiers back,” said
Connick. “With so many girls, one
advantage is the fact there is will be
quality competition in every event.
“We also feel that many of our
girls have put in a lot of time during
the off-season which will help us
gain momentum as the season progresses.”
Others out for track at Algona are
seniors Taylor Cink and Katrina
Haas, junior Katie Green along with
sophomores Amanda Bernhard,
Kuleen Parsons, Courtney Schmidt
and Jenni Zeller.
Rounding out the roster are 21
freshmen. They include Bergen
Brown, Sonya Curtis, Emily Drusch,
Morgan Goche, Jordan Gorham,
Leah Hamilton, Haley Karels, Kyle
pretty much non-stop meets. We will
have some practice time but it is
mainly competitive playing.

the girls were still able to perform at

participating for the second year in a
row, we look for great depth and
competition within our team to transfer
to success on the track.”

GOLDEN BEARS
With 10 returning lettermen to build a solid
nucleus for the 2010 season, the Golden Bear
boys’ track team will look for more success
this year. The Golden Bears return four state
qualifiers that ran in four different events at
state.
Bishop Garrigan finished 11th at the Class
1A state meet last year with 22 points. The
black-and-gold will again be lead by Head
Coach Marty Wadle and will be assisted by
Dave Schnurr and Deacon Bob Larson.
“We have 10 returning lettermen which is a
good place to start to put a good line-up together,”
said Bishop Garrigan Coach Wadle. “We
will hopefully be very competitive in the relay
events. We will have to step up to get some
people to step us and fill in to replace the guys
we lost.
“Brett is a returning state place winner and
we expected another good year from him. We
are going to need to replace some points in the
field events to be competitive in that for a team
title. We have pretty good numbers, including
a big freshmen class this season.”
Brett Capesius heads the list of 10 returning
lettermen. The senior finished 10th in the 400meter
dash in a time of 52.29. He ran on the 4
x 800 squad that was third in 8:22.70, the 4 x
200 relay team that placed fourth in 1:31.85
and the 4 x 400 quartet that was fourth in
3:30.59.
Also returning is junior Kevin Elbert that ran
on the 4 x 100 group that placed fifth in 44.62.
Another junior, Jacob Behr, ran on both the 4 x
100 and 4 x 200 squads at state while sophomore
Alex Boisjolie was a member of the 4 x
800 team.

Patterson, Ben Hellman, Joe Straub along with
Kyle Smith. Patterson and Bradley each qualified
for three events and both Hellman and
Straub qualified in one event.
Bishop Garrigan will open the 2010 outdoor
season on March 31 at the annual CYO meet at
Storm Lake. The Golden Bears will host their
own relays on May 6 and will run at the North
Central Conference meet at Humboldt on May
10th.

Garrigan boys return five lettermen
The 2010 edition of the Bishop Garrigan
Golden Bear boys’ golf team hopes to pick up
where they left off last season. The Golden
Bears qualified for the state tournament placing
fourth and won the North Central
Conference tournament.
Dean Capesius will again be the head coach
for the black-and-gold squad.
“Our outlook for the season is to be consistent
both individually and as a team in scoring,”
said Golden Bear Coach Capesius.
“With just losing one senior and returning five
lettermen, nothing less that a state title should
be in this team’s grasp.
“We look to accomplish what we did last
year. We would like to add a few more wins
for the season if we can. We have a good
group of golfers coming back to lead the
squad.”
Five lettermen return for the black-and-gold
this spring. Seniors Brandon Doughan, Bryan
Berte, Jordan Springer and Mike Mergen
along with junior Andrew Schiltz are the
returning letter winners.
Bishop Garrigan won both the sectional and
district titles last year and took fourth at state
with a team total of 341-343-684. Returning
players Schiltz was 18th with a 168, Berte was
21st at 172 followed by Springer with 174 for
32nd and Doughan’s 181 was 43rd at the tour-

A big squad numbering 36
girls will dot the roster of the
Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear
girls’ track team. The Golden
Bears have 19 returning letter
winners, including four that
qualified in a pair of events at
the state meet.
Head Coach Greg Ahlers
returns to guide the blackand-gold
thinclads this spring.
He will again be assisted by
Daryl Kohlhaas and Mary
Quinlan.
“We should be strong in
many areas this year,” said
Bishop Garrigan Coach
Ahlers. “We should be solid in
the 400 hurdles and the 400’s
which should be as good as or
better than last year. I am not
sure what will be our best
relay.
“We will have to wait to see
what the new members can
give us. Our weakness with be
in the field events. We will be
looking for girls to step up to
these events and get us some
points in the meet.”
Leading the returning letter
winners is senior Mackenzie
Schindler, who was a member
of the 4 x 400 relay quartet
that placed 19th at state with a
clocking of 4:19.68.

also finishing 13th in the 400meter
hurdles in a time of

podium capturing the Class 1A state title and
three players return off that squad.
The Golden Bears finished first at the North
Central Conference tournament and were second
at the annual CYO tournament. The blackand-gold
won both the district and regional
titles before taking the state title with a team
score of 700.
“The girls’ road will see the absence of three
seniors from last year but wereturn three letter
winners from that squad,” said veteran Bishop
Garrigan Coach Dean Capesius. “Our goal is
to find three players to fill the void of an experienced
group.
“One could say we gained a year of experience
this past summer with all the hard work
put in to try to continue the road to hopefully
another championship, our sixth in seven
years.
“I think the team will be determined and
ready to play. Hopefully the weather will cooperate
so we can find our place in the 2010 golf
season.”
Three letter winners will return for the
Golden Bears to lead this year’s team. Juniors
Laura Richter and Kelsie Berke along with
sophomore Sheridan Berte are the returnees.

discus. Miller qualified for
state in both the 400-meter
hurdles and ran on the 4 x 400
team.
“We will need the younger
girls to contribute this spring,”
said Coach Ahlers.
“Obviously, we will get a
boost from Erin, who placed
fourth at the state cross-country
meet this fall. She will run
800’s, the 1,500 and 3,000 for
us.”

There are 13 members on the
2010 edition of the Corwith-
Wesley-LuVerne Panther boys’
golf squad, including three letter
winners. The Panther
linksters went 25-18 last season
and will be again lead by Head
Coach Ryan Wagner.
“We finished last year with
our best record since I have
been here,” said Panther Coach
Wagner. “We had a great duel
and triangular record last year
but struggled under pressure at
the tournaments last year. We
will have to replace some solid
seniors that graduated.
“We bring back a group with
some experience but we will
need to become more consistent
and we need to have some of
them to step up into some new
roles. We have a group of kids
that could be pretty solid if we
have some kids come through.
We have a nice group of golfers
returning and if we improve on
our short game as a team, we will
have a very successful season.”
The Panthers’ top two golfers
coming back are junior Caleb
Anderson and sophomore Mitchell
Carroll. Coach Wagner says they
both will need to be in the low 40’s
consistently for the team to have success
this year. The other returner is
junior Colton Florea and he was a
consistent mid-40 golfer before the
season ended last year.
The maroon-and-white has seniors
Nathan Chambers, Brady Otis and
Nathan Nall that all have experience
and hopes that these three could possibly
fill out the top six golfers.
Junior Kyle Hauswirth and sophomore
Cody Goetz could also step up
and contribute to the squad.

Three letter winners back for Panther girls
With three returning letter winners sprinkled
among a squad of five players, the
Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne Panther girls’ golf
team looks for a successful 2010 season.
Head Coach Ryan Wagner will be the head
mentor for the squad this spring. The Panthers
were 18-16 last season.
“We bring back three letter winners that
gained a lot of experience last year and had
their ups and downs,” said Panther Coach
Wagner. “Alesha and Whitney both return as
juniors and Melissa was all-conference last
year as a freshman. We will then have to
count on two freshmen that have little or no
golfing experience to round out the team.
“We might not have a team score to start
the year, it will depend how those two develop
and if they want to golf in meets or not. We
are hoping to have a very good team and try
to improve on our 18-16 record from a year
ago. That was an improvement for us a year
ago but we want to keep improving as indi-

Junior Jason Carroll scored all of
the Panthers’ nine points at state finishing
third in the 100-meter dash in
11.33 and was sixth in the 200 with
his time of 23.07.

“We are low in numbers but what
we lack in numbers, we will make up
with speed,” said Coach DeGroote.
“It all starts with Jason. He has been
working hard strengthening his knee
after his football injury and he is
already surpassing our expectations.
“Jay returns in the hurdle events
and comes into track season in excellent
condition. Adam has not been
able to participate in track the past
two seasons but broke the junior high
record in the high jump so we are
glad to have him along.
“The two freshmen come out of
the blocks strong and are hard workers.
It should be an exciting season
and we can not wait to see them on
the track.”
Two Panthers are returning lettermen
for the maroon-and-white.
Senior Jay Nissen just missed qualifying
for the Class 1A state meet in
both the 110 and 400-meter hurdles
last spring.
Junior Jason Carroll is one of the
best sprinters in not only the area but
in Class 1A. The new members to
the squad are junior Adam
Thompson along with freshmen
Matthew Burns and Randy Cram.
The Panthers open the outdoor
season on April 1 at the Indian
Relays in Forest City. Corwith-
Wesley-LuVerne will host the annual
Panther Relays at Britt on April 12.
The Cornbelt Conference meet is
scheduled for May 4 at Armstrong.

The West Bend-Mallard Wolverines boys’
golf team returns four golfers with varsity
experience for the 2010 season. The purpleand-gold
will be coached this spring by Head
Coach Phil Sorenson.
“We return four guys that played a lot last
year and gained a lot of varsity experience,”
said Coach Sorenson. “Ryan should be one of
the top golfers in the area and he hopes to
return to the form he had as a freshman when
he qualified for the state tournament. We hope
to finish in the top three of the conference.”
Four lettermen return for the Wolverines in
2010. Leading the way is junior Ryan Banwart.
He finished fourth at conference with an 81
and was sixth at sectionals also with an 81.
The other returnees are senior Jake
Goodchild, junior Greg Mader and sophomore
Christopher Schmidt. Mader was 23rd at the
conference meet with a 92 and Goodchild was
38th with a 98. At sectionals, Goodchild was

girls’ track team made huge
strides, winning the Cornbelt
Conference and were the runner-ups
at the girls’ Class 1A
regional meet.
The girls were 30th at the
Class 1A state meet with nine
points. Head Coach Jamie
Fehr will again be the head
mentor for the squad, which
returns 15 letter winners
among a cast of 24 runners.
“The girls are showing
great work effort early in the
season, most likely due to the
excitement they generated last
year,” said Coach Fehr. “The
team broke a number of
records and won a number of
meets last year.
“One of the most important
goals we achieved was winning
our conference meet last
year. The girls are planning to
repeat that title this year and I
think we have a great chance
of accomplishing that goal.
This year we have our sights
set on a district title, having
been the runner-ups last year.
“A number of girls have
gained the confidence they
need to train well, compete
hard and make it to the state
meet again this year. The team

experience returning, the Woden-
Crystal Lake-Titonka Tiger boys’
golf squad looks to finish in the top
half of the conference this season.
The black-and-gold will be coached
by Head Coach Adam Squires this
year.
“The boys return five players with
varsity experience from the 2009
season,” said Woden-Crystal Lake-
Titonka Coach Squires. “We hope to
finish in the top half to middle part of
the Cornbelt this spring. Hopefully
we can show improvement each
meet this spring and get better as the
season goes on.”
Leading the list of returning lettermen
is a pair of two-time letter winners
in juniors Eric Spear and Joey
Lee. Spear earned third-team allconference
honors last year shooting
a 93 at the conference meet and Lee
placed 42nd at conference with a 101
total.
Also returning are three sophomore
lettermen. Those players are
Tyler Franzen, Jesse Heyer and
Bryce Hoffman. Franzen’s 87 at the
league tournament earned him 12th
place in the conference and earned
him second-team all-conference
honors. Heyer placed 33rd at conference
with a 98 and Hoffman was
52nd with a 106.
Other Tigers looking to break into
The Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka Tiger
girls’ golf team returns four players off last
year’s Cornbelt Conference championship
squad . The team will be coached this spring by
Adam Squires.
The Tigers won the league title last year with
a team total of 410 to win by a convincing 26
strokes and finished third at districts with a 468
score.
“We return a solid nucleus from last year
with four of our top five players returning,”
said Coach Squires. “We are the defending
conference champions and look to defend that
title in May at Spencer. I want to see continued
improvement from the girls in each meet as the
season progresses.”
The squad returns four letter winners led by
Cornbelt Conference medalist Michelle Eden.
The senior shot a 98 to be the only golfer in the
league to break 100 in the tournament last year.
She also placed 10th at districts with a 105 last
spring.
Classmate Nicole Bannister also returns
with experience and was the conference runner-up
medalist with a 101. She also placed
17th at districts for the black-and-gold.
Senior Emily Ullman is another senior letter
winner. She placed fifth in the conference last
May with a 105 and finished 18th at districts.

Kyler Kirschbaum. The only senior lost off last
year’s conference championship team is Kayla
Hoffman.
Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka will open the
season on April 6 at the Wesley Golf Course
versus North Iowa and Corwith-Wesley-
LuVerne. The black-and-gold will look to
repeat as the Cornbelt champs on Monday,
May 3 at the Spencer Municipal Golf Course.

Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne
Panther girls’ track squad
numbers eight and will be led
by four returning senior letter
winners to build a strong
foundation for the team.
Head Coach Beth DeGroote
returns again as the head mentor
for the maroon-and-white
during this spring’s season.
“We have put together a
nice team with two long distance
runners and six sprinters,”
said Coach DeGroote.
“We have seven returning letter
winners and one new girl
who is a freshman.
“Jessica had been working
hard at the discus and we
expect her to have a strong
senior season. Saundra and
Kirsty are welcomed back and
Renee is hoping to break the
1,500 mark this spring.
“Hillary is a very hard
worker and Nicole broke the
school record in the 3,200meter
run and we look for her
to have another strong year.
Jessica has been working hard
at coming out of the blocks
and we are looking for Lauren
to fit some where.”
There are four seniors on
the squad and all four are
returning letter winners.
Jessica Marty had a strong
year in the discus last year and
was one of the stronger ones
in the conference.
Kirsty Riggert returns in
both the shot put and the discus
and has spent a lot of time
in the weight room to get
stronger and improve in her
events. Renee Egan will be
strong in the 800 and 1,500
meter runs and Saundra
Vorland will be a returning
sprinter for the maroon-andwhite.
The lone junior on the team
is Hillary Hilbert and she is a
versatile runner that could fit
in anywhere. Sophomore
Nicole Studer set the Corwith-
Wesley-LuVerne school
record in the 3,200-meter run
in a time of 12:11 and will be
looking to lower her time in
that event this spring.
The other sophomore letter
winner is sprinter Jessica
Lawson. The only non letter
winner on the Panther squad
is freshman Lauren
Chambers.
The Panther girls’ will open
the outdoor season on April 5
at Britt by hosting the Panther
Relays. The Cornbelt
Conference meet is at
Armstrong on May 4th.
Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne
will run at the district meet on
May 14th at a site to be determined,
probably at Laurens or
Armstrong. The maroon-andwhite
opened the indoor season
on March 23 at the UNI

WB-M/TRV boys return seven lettermen
The 2010 edition of the
West Bend-Mallard/Twin
River Valley Boys’ track team
returns seven lettermen to
guide this year’s team. The
squad is coached by Head
Coach Jerry Vanderhorst and
he will be assisted by Eldon
McKimmey.
“We have a good group of
kids to work with for the 2010
season,” said Coach
Vanderhorst. “With seven letter
winners returning, we will
have some leadership and
experience returning in many
races and events.
“Jack is a hard worker and
is looking forward to the season
after finishing 14th at
state in the 1,600-meter run
last year. The other lettermen
are very capable of running
many different events. We are
looking forward to scoring
more points at each track meet
and try to improve as the season
progresses toward our
conference and district
meets.”

The black-and-blue finished
fourth in the Cornbelt Conference
tournament and were sixth in the
sectional golf meet. The 2009 team
averaged 179 strokes per meet last
year.
“This group is extremely young
and will have to develop quickly to
compete at the high school level,”
said Twin River Valley Coach
Burger. “We will have to work hard
to get the most out of the players we
have.”
Three lettermen return for this
year’s team. They are junior Gage
Brainard along with sophomores
Zach McKenna and Will Lonning.

of 4:44.64. Other returnees
are junior Jordan Knobloch
along with sophomores Collin
Thatcher, Sean Riesenberg,
McKenna finished 54th at the
Cornbelt Conference meet with a
score of 109 while Brainard and
Lonning played junior varsity last
season.
Rounding out the roster is sophomore
Abel Ramos and four eager
freshmen. Those players are Brady
McCullough, Austin Foth, Daniel
Connors and Justin Sorenson.
Gone from last year’s team are
Trevor Peters and Sean Schneider.
Peters was fourth at the conference
meet with an 81 and Schneider finished
33rd with a 97 at that meet.
The Thunder will open the 2010
season on April 6 at the Spring
Valley Golf Course hosting the
Pocahontas Indians. The Thunder
will host the Cornbelt Conference
meet on May 3 and the Class 1A
state meet on May 28-29 at Spring
Valley.

Young TRV boys look for improvement
The Twin River Valley Thunder girls’ golf
team returns three letter winners to the squad
which only numbers four players. The Thunder
will again be coach by Head Coach Candy
Burger and she will be assisted by Tony Beach.
The Thunder finished last year with a 254
stroke average. The squad was fifth at the
Cornbelt Conference meet and seventh at the
district meet last year.
“With the low numbers, we will not have the
option of dropping two scores so we will have
to focus on playing consistently and improving
each week,” said Thunder Coach Burger.
“Cassidy has medaled in a lot of previous
meets and was a first-team all-conference
member last year.”
A trio of letter winners will return for the
squad. Leading the way is senior Cassidy
Cirks. Cirks finished third in the conference
meet last year with a score of 101.
Also returning is senior Jessica Kellner, who
shot a 126 at the Cornbelt Conference meet
and sophomore Jamie Johnson who fired a 142
at the meet. The newcomer to the squad is
freshman Lindsey Humble.
Twin River Valley lost Kassie Atwood to
graduation from last year’s team. She placed
fourth at the conference meet with a score of
102.
The Thunder will open their season on April
6 at Pochontas versus the Maidens. The
Cornbelt Conference meet this year will be
played at the Spencer Municipal Golf Course
on May 3.
