MEMBER MOMENT: Steve HeimHow old are you, wh<strong>er</strong>e do you live, and what is or wasyour occupation?Sixty four years old and living in Cismont, Va. I am a ClinicalPsychologist with Charlottesville Psychological Associates beinga founding partn<strong>er</strong> and now managing partn<strong>er</strong>.What <strong>Porsche</strong>s have you owned?Well this is my first. I’ve owned some great cars ov<strong>er</strong> the yearsbut my 2001 Boxst<strong>er</strong> is my first G<strong>er</strong>man sports car.What are your favorite “previously owned”?My first car, at age 16, was a 1936 Plymouth coupe. Thatcar had a single front leath<strong>er</strong> bench seat with four on thefloor and a huge trunk. The Plymouth was a real attentiongett<strong>er</strong> but v<strong>er</strong>y expensive to maintain on a newspap<strong>er</strong> boy’searnings. Next was a 1956 Chevrolet conv<strong>er</strong>tible, a 6 cylind<strong>er</strong>with a Pow<strong>er</strong>glide 2 speed transmission. That car was my firstconv<strong>er</strong>tible. It was slow but fun. Then came a 1960 Ford Galaxyconv<strong>er</strong>tible with the 351 Cleveland motor and dual exhausts.Ran well and sounded great. As you might guess, I had hadenough of that slow 6 cylind<strong>er</strong> two speed automatic. The lastconv<strong>er</strong>tible before the current Boxst<strong>er</strong> was a Pontiac Tempestwith a 326 motor. That car handled well (compared to theoth<strong>er</strong>s) but was s<strong>er</strong>iously damaged in a hit and run accident. .My first sports car was the classic 280Z in racing green, agreat car, fast and agile but v<strong>er</strong>y prone to rust. Then came a280ZX , more luxurious but had an odd temp<strong>er</strong>ature controlthat blew v<strong>er</strong>y hot air or outside air. That was no fun in thewint<strong>er</strong>. Next was my favorite, a car that compares well to theBoxst<strong>er</strong>, a 1988 Toyota Supra with that sup<strong>er</strong>b three lit<strong>er</strong> sixcylind<strong>er</strong> motor that was bullet proof. This was a wond<strong>er</strong>ful carand one that I am sorry I sold. It was quick, v<strong>er</strong>y comfortable,two suspension settings, handled beautifully, speed sensitivepow<strong>er</strong> ste<strong>er</strong>ing, quiet and v<strong>er</strong>y comfortable seats. I kept it for16 years and only rememb<strong>er</strong> repairing it once!story h<strong>er</strong>e. Before I bought the Toyota Supra in 1989 I lookedat a 944 owned by Oliv<strong>er</strong> Kuttn<strong>er</strong> when he had a used cardeal<strong>er</strong>ship on Market St.in Charlottesville.. Oliv<strong>er</strong> asked mewhat I would use the car for and I told him that I was going touse it as a daily driv<strong>er</strong> on a 80 mile daily round trip. He said,“Buy the Supra”. I did but nev<strong>er</strong> gave up the idea of owning a<strong>Porsche</strong>. Still wanting a car capable of s<strong>er</strong>ving as a daily driv<strong>er</strong>,the Boxst<strong>er</strong> seemed ideal when I decided to start looking for<strong>Porsche</strong>.What would be your dream <strong>Porsche</strong>?Oddly it is the 3 lit<strong>er</strong> wat<strong>er</strong> cooled 968, the epitome of this lineof automobiles. Gary, are you reading this?What do you listen to when driving your <strong>Porsche</strong>?The motor, s<strong>er</strong>iously I like to listen to it purr. My favorite drivingtune, well CD, is definitely “Riding with the King”, with BB Kingand Eric Clapton. My favorite single is “Born To Be Wild”, “Getyour motor running, get out on the highway………What are your oth<strong>er</strong> hobbies and int<strong>er</strong>ests?While I still have the Harley and belong to the local HOG club.I have a collection of WWII books that are always int<strong>er</strong>estingand I am constantly on the prowl for new analyses and battlehistories. Plus we have 17 acres in Cismont with horses anddogs so th<strong>er</strong>e is always plenty to do outside.How did you end up with the Boxst<strong>er</strong>?Well, I’ve owned a Harley Davidson for 30 years with the latestbeing a 2004 Dyna Sup<strong>er</strong> Glide. For those uninitiated, thisis the lightest and most agile of the Harley Big Twins. Mostint<strong>er</strong>esting, the latest in the Harley lineup is the “VRod”withthe first wat<strong>er</strong> cooled engine ev<strong>er</strong> used by Harley. Ringingany bells out th<strong>er</strong>e, yes, this latest Harley is the ov<strong>er</strong>head camRevolution V Twin motor completely designed by none oth<strong>er</strong>than <strong>Porsche</strong>. It has given Harley a true competitor to th<strong>er</strong>ice beat<strong>er</strong>s (Japanese sport bikes). I test rode one and thatmotor was so smooth and quick at all rpm levels that the name<strong>Porsche</strong> started resonating in my brain. Then yet anoth<strong>er</strong> rid<strong>er</strong>in the local HOG club was in a s<strong>er</strong>ious motorcycle accidentand I decided that it was time to give up this rath<strong>er</strong> dang<strong>er</strong>oussport. But, you might ask what might inspire me to give up sucha fun and remarkably Zen ride as anyone exp<strong>er</strong>iences on aHarley? Yep, a <strong>Porsche</strong>. My wife, Penney, quickly agreed thatit was well worth the expense if a <strong>Porsche</strong> would inspire me togive up the Harley.Was it hard to sell the Harley aft<strong>er</strong> 30 years of own<strong>er</strong>shipand how did you choose a Boxst<strong>er</strong>?No, it wasn’t hard, the Harley……is still in the garage.
