February Business/Social Meeting<strong>Shenandoah</strong> <strong>Region</strong>’s February Business/Social Meeting washeld on Saturday, February 13th at Ov<strong>er</strong>street European Motorsin Gordonsville. Paul Ov<strong>er</strong>street hosted our meeting that tookplace in Paul’s spacious workshop that is attached to the CDOCfacility.The event was well attended with an estimated 30 people inattendance. Many attendees did not drive their <strong>Porsche</strong>s due tothe sloppy roads conditions. I think my 911 has been out of thegarage once since the first week of Decemb<strong>er</strong>. As I tell folks, “IfI wanted to live in Fargo, ND, I would have moved th<strong>er</strong>e!”The meeting started with remarks from our President, BillSand<strong>er</strong>s. Bill brought us up to date on <strong>Region</strong> and PCA news,including the 2010 <strong>Porsche</strong> Parade and the RPM event inRichmond. Sh<strong>er</strong>ry Westfall talked about upcoming events thatwe should add to our calendars. Check the <strong>Region</strong>’s website orthe “Heat Exchang<strong>er</strong>” for all the latest scheduled activities.Bill then introduced Paul Ov<strong>er</strong>street to talk with us about gettingour <strong>Porsche</strong>’s ready for spring driving. This was an especiallytimely topic due to the sev<strong>er</strong>e wint<strong>er</strong> we have exp<strong>er</strong>ienced h<strong>er</strong>ein the Commonwealth. I will try to impart some of the key tipsPaul shared with us.Paul advised us that if storing your car for extended p<strong>er</strong>iods oftime (i.e. a couple of months or more) you should connect abatt<strong>er</strong>y maintain<strong>er</strong> or trickle charg<strong>er</strong> to your <strong>Porsche</strong>’s batt<strong>er</strong>y. Ifusing a trickle charg<strong>er</strong>, place it on the lowest charge setting soyou will not damage the batt<strong>er</strong>y. I use the “Batt<strong>er</strong>y Tend<strong>er</strong> Plus”(batt<strong>er</strong>y maintain<strong>er</strong>) which is sold by the Deltran Corporation.Th<strong>er</strong>e are many oth<strong>er</strong> quality batt<strong>er</strong>y maintain<strong>er</strong>s on the market.Anoth<strong>er</strong> suggestion for <strong>Porsche</strong>s in wint<strong>er</strong> storage was to add“Sta-Bil” gas stabiliz<strong>er</strong> to your gas before putting your <strong>Porsche</strong>away for the wint<strong>er</strong>.Paul also talked about rodents (e.g. squirrels, field mice, etc.)that may take haven in your car during the cold wint<strong>er</strong> months.Before driving your <strong>Porsche</strong> for the first time in the spring, youshould thoroughly check your <strong>Porsche</strong> for evidence of rodents.Look in the trunk, und<strong>er</strong> the spare tire, in the smuggl<strong>er</strong>’s box ifyou have an old<strong>er</strong> 911, and around the cabin air filt<strong>er</strong>s in thelat<strong>er</strong> model <strong>Porsche</strong>s. Rodents could also get into exposedductwork und<strong>er</strong> your car. Paul suggested placing bits of “d-Con”mouse poison in your trunk and und<strong>er</strong> your <strong>Porsche</strong> beforestoring it for extended p<strong>er</strong>iods.We also discussed cleaning our cars aft<strong>er</strong> wint<strong>er</strong> storage. Athrough washing and waxing is always a good idea when gettingready for spring driving. Paul suggested putting a good rubb<strong>er</strong>treatment on your tires and rubb<strong>er</strong> trim, cleaning your leath<strong>er</strong>seats with Lexol leath<strong>er</strong> clean<strong>er</strong> and condition<strong>er</strong> and treating youvinyl int<strong>er</strong>ior components with Lexol’s Vinylex protectant. Hemade a strong point about not using Armor All on your <strong>Porsche</strong>’srubb<strong>er</strong> or vinyl due to Armor All’s high concentrations of silicon.When we concluded the <strong>Region</strong> business and tech sessionportions of our meeting, we got into our cars for the shortdrive to Tolliv<strong>er</strong> House restaurant in “downtown” Gordonsville.Gordonsville is fortunate to have sev<strong>er</strong>al v<strong>er</strong>y good restaurantsand the Tolliv<strong>er</strong> House is one of them.We w<strong>er</strong>e greeted at the door by the hostess who escorted usto our own private dining room. Since we had pre-ord<strong>er</strong>ed ourmeals at the time we regist<strong>er</strong>ed to attend, our lunches w<strong>er</strong>ealready being prepared as we found a seat and socialized withfellow PCA’<strong>er</strong>s.I had the good fortune to sit with Sh<strong>er</strong>ry and Jim Condon. Jimfascinated me with his stories and facts about Radio Astronomy.I felt like I was talking with Carl Sagan (rememb<strong>er</strong> “Cosmos” -PBS TV s<strong>er</strong>ies) because Jim made things v<strong>er</strong>y und<strong>er</strong>standableand v<strong>er</strong>y exciting. I am really looking forward to taking theplanned driving tour of the NRAO facility at Green Bank, WV.Sitting across from me was Paul Sponsell<strong>er</strong>. Paul shared withus some stories from a few years back when he piloted an F-4Phantom for the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Basedon Paul’s memories of the F-4’s p<strong>er</strong>formance, his Caymen mustseem pretty lethargic!I had the Quiche of the Day and a wond<strong>er</strong>ful green salad. Thequiche was broccoli and cheese and was fantastic! Th<strong>er</strong>ew<strong>er</strong>e many diff<strong>er</strong>ent dishes being s<strong>er</strong>ved and they all lookedwond<strong>er</strong>ful. I do recall seeing quite a few clean plates at theconclusion of lunch. Syn<strong>er</strong>gy Racing Returns to the 2010 Rolex S<strong>er</strong>iesby Alex SmithOn April 24th at V.I.R. at 1:00p.m the green flag will wavefor a wond<strong>er</strong>ful Grand Am<strong>er</strong>ican Race close enough forall of us to attend. The race also will be televised on theSpeed channel.I hope our <strong>Shenandoah</strong> memb<strong>er</strong>s can support Syn<strong>er</strong>gy’s#81 <strong>Porsche</strong> Cup Car. Cole Scrogham, second presidentof our <strong>Shenandoah</strong> <strong>Region</strong> is a Syn<strong>er</strong>gy part own<strong>er</strong> andcrew chief and K<strong>er</strong>rigan Smith gen<strong>er</strong>al manag<strong>er</strong> of Syn<strong>er</strong>gyand long time friend of <strong>Shenandoah</strong> and R.P.M. is back inthe pits to start the 2010 season.The Syn<strong>er</strong>gy Race car will be running with the liv<strong>er</strong>y ofRichmond, VA based J. Sargeant Reynolds CommunityCollege. In somewhat of a diff<strong>er</strong>ent twist, a sponsor wholoves his school is bringing the J. Sargeant Reynolds carto the track. Reynolds has an automotive college and thestudent’s have had a ball within their curriculum studyingracing and the positive impact racing technology brings toour ev<strong>er</strong>yday automobiles. Also, the students are planninga field trip to Syn<strong>er</strong>gy headquart<strong>er</strong>s and Cole might eventeach a class. The college has many opportunities for thestudents (honorary pit crew, news stories, dollars pledgedp<strong>er</strong> lap) by participating in this motor sports event…needless to say “the cool factor”.J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College just receivedone of only 2 Department of En<strong>er</strong>gy grants for $760,000to study alt<strong>er</strong>native fuels in automobiles.
