Chapter EightThose who are occupied in religious work may read one tasbīĥof each from these as their sacrifice and services are extremelyimportant. All four of these kalimas are invaluable.In addition to the religious benefits, they also benefit in theworldly life. A short discussion on this may be read in the bookBarakāt-e-Dhikr (The Blessings of Dhikr).ELEVEN. Any Urdu book written by (Shaikh al-Ĥadīth) ShaikhZakariyyā should be read and studied regularly. If possible, suchbooks may also be read out to friends. The latter, in many respects,is better than the former.When one book is read and completed another book may bestarted. One should continue this practice since reading books ofthe pious substitutes for sitting in their presence.One book may be preferable over another based on one’sindividual circumstances. This is something which can only betold in person after being informed of one’s individual situation.Besides these, Ta‘līm al-Ţālib and Ta‘līm al-Dīn by Shaikh Ashraf‘Alī Thānwī and Akābir kā Sulūk au Iĥsān, Faiđ-e-Shaikh, Nisbat auIĥsān, and The Reality of Bai‘a may also be studied. It is also good toread the books of other shaikhs, particularly those of our line andschool of thought.It is necessary that the dhākirīn study the books Ikmāl al-Shiyamand Irshād al-Mulūk deeply and with contemplation.TWELVE. One must inform me of his personal progress monthly.He must mention how many of the recommended points he isacting upon. Do not include this booklet in the mail, but ratherthe relevant numbers should be mentioned respectively.THIRTEEN. After carrying out the advice given above continuouslyand for at least six months one may request additional dhikr. Theconditions before asking for more dhikr are:1 There is fervent desire and demand [for more dhikr]2 One must be mentally fit and also possess the physical strengthto endure an increase in the dhikr.3 One has adequate time for dhikr.61

The truth is that no matter how beautiful andpromising the life of this world looks it is temporal, whereasthe life of the Hereafter is everlasting. Therefore, it is necessarythat the desire and concern of the Hereafter be greater than thatfor this world, and that death be remembered perpetually. Thestudy of the book Fađā’il-e-Śadaqāt will be a great aid in thisregard.Leisure and spare moments should always be devoted to theremembrance of Allah u, as these are the aids and crutches of theHereafter. These are also means for blessing and peace of mind andheart in this world.Certain times like the day of Jumu‘a, the 9th of Dhu al-Ĥijja[in‘Arafāt on Hajj], 15th of Sha‘bān, the night of both Eids andthe night of Qadr, and every odd night from the last ten daysof Ramadan are special. In fact, the whole month of Ramadanis auspicious. This has been concisely dealt with in the book ofthis humble servant Faza’il-e-Ramađān. It is recommended tocommence the study and reading of this book a few days beforeRamadan and that it be carefully studied and read out to othersduring this sacred month. An earnest effort must be made to avoidwasting time during this month.May Allah u, out of His infinite bounty, kindness and compassiongrant this worthless and impure soul the privilege to carry outthese gracious deeds. [End of Booklet]‘Ishā and TarāwīĥThe adhān of ‘Ishā usually began immediately after bai‘a. Someran to perform ablution while others began voluntary śalāt. It wasknown that if anyone came a little late, he would not find space inthe first few rows.Śalāt began half an hour after adhān.
