Ramadan of the Eldersthe masjid to listen to Ĥađrat. The masjid was so full there wasnot an inch of space. In fact, people were standing outside on thestreet to hear the talk. Since Ĥađrat’s voice could not be heardoutside, a loudspeaker was installed. Thousands of people sat andwere served tea quietly as the talk went on and not one person wasleft out who did not receive tea. People finished their tea by thetime Ĥađrat finished talking. The talk was purely inspirational, theobjective being to bring people closer to Allah u. Rarely was apolitical point raised except to liven up the talk. During the talk,Ĥađrat received notes that were read out to him. He would respondaccordingly, sometimes in detail if need be. When Ĥađrat becamesick in the middle of Ramadan, others took his place in deliveringthe talk. Though he was sick, Ĥađrat attended these talks and didnot leave until they ended. One hour after the talk, people shookhands with Ĥađrat. Although every measure was taken to assurethat Ĥađrat arrived quickly to the car, it took him some time toreach the car. After arriving at the residence, snacks were servedand everyone who was present joined in this gathering. By thetime the gathering ended, it was usually 1:30 a.m.After that, Ĥađrat left for his room and if the need arose, talkedprivately to his confidants. Then Ĥađrat rested for half an hourand woke up for tahajjud [I saw many times and experiencedhow my Ĥađrat Sahāranpūrī and Ĥađrat Madanī had completecontrol over their sleep. When they wished to sleep, they closetheir eyes and they were asleep. If they set a time to wake up,there was no need for an alarm or any person to wake them up,they would wake up at the appointed time on their own. I havementioned this in Āp Bītī- Zakariyyā]. After he attended to hispersonal needs, he departed for the masjid for tahajjud. Thepeople who came from afar usually reached the masjid beforeĤađrat or at least caught Ĥađrat in the first rak‘as. Shaikh Jalīland Ĥađrat both led in tahajjud.Ĥađrat was careful about not making any noise or wakinganyone up when he left for the masjid to pray tahajjud. However,usually people were already awake since they looked forward to149

Since little time was left aftervoluntary śalāt for seĥr, the mat was quickly laid out in the houseand everyone ate swiftly with eyes fixed on the clock and earslistening for the adhān. Ĥađrat rested for a short time after seĥrand then prepared for Fajr. He departed for the masjid and led Fajrshortly before sunrise. In the last ten days, Fajr śalāt began at itsbeginning time and finished shortly before sunrise [i.e. the Fajrwas very long-translator]. All the departees who prayed tahajjudwith Ĥađrat came to meet him before he left for the house. Whenhe arrived at the house, he lay down immediately and one or twoof his helpers massaged his body while another massaged his headwith oil. If Ĥađrat fell asleep while talking, the others wouldalso leave to sleep. After a little rest, Ĥađrat woke up, attendedto his needs, performed ablution and sat down to recite Qur’an.Then, people who had appointments with Ĥađrat started comingin at about 10 a.m. If Ĥađrat had any free time in between, hecontinued reciting or otherwise attended to the mail. Sometimesthis continued to Ẓuhr and if any time was leftover, Ĥađrat restedhalf an hour before Ẓuhr.This year Ĥađrat became extremely sick and ran a high fever fromthe middle of Ramadan. Seeing his condition, some of his helpersfelt it was better that he not perform i‘tikāf this year. They asked,“Ĥađrat, you will have difficulty in i‘tikāf.” Ĥađrat replied,“No, I have made the intention for i‘tikāf.”Thus, Ĥađrat’s place was set up in one corner of the masjid.Sometimes, he felt cold in śalāt due to the fever and wrapped athick shawl around himself and the ceiling fans were turned off. Inthis condition, he drank a bit of tea during the interval and thenstood up for śalāt again. He did the same in tahajjud, standing forlong periods reciting Qur’an.Ĥađrat was extremely sick and stayed in the house because ofwhich the congregation that gathered for tahajjud was cancelledfor four days. This increased the burden on Ĥađrat since he nowhad to recite more Qur’an in tahajjud in order to finish it withinthe last ten days. In addition, it was difficult for Ĥađrat to stay in150
