Ramadan of the EldersOnce, lack of food and sleep and standing the whole night madehim extremely weak. His feet became bloated but the love of listeningto the Qur’an never let him rest. He wished to continue listeningto Qur’an as much as he could the whole night. In the end, whenĤađrat’s family became desperate, they called upon Shaikh ĤāfiżKifāyat Allāh and told him to excuse himself in order to make thevoluntary śalāt short. Shaikh recited a little, and then complained ofsome pains. Ĥađrat was always concerned for the comfort of others;he immediately accepted and let him go. Shaikh Kifayat Allāhwent to lie down while Ĥađrat continued praying. A while later he[Shaikh Kifāyat Allāh] felt somebody massaging his feet. When helooked up and saw it was Shaikh al-Hind he was shocked and immediatelyjumped off the bed, but Ĥađrat said, “Brother, don’t worry.You were sick; this will help you feel better.” 69After he returned the second time from Malta, Shaikh al-IslāmMadanī writes of his last Ramadan:In the blessed nights of Ramadan, Ĥađrat left for ‘Dār al-‘Ulūm[Deoband] after tarāwīĥ and all the students, teachers and staffgathered to enjoy the beautiful talks, fine points, and spiritual faiđof the shaikh of Hind. Ah! Who knew this was to be his last time.Devotions of Ĥakīm al-Umma Shaikh Ashraf ‘Alī ThānwīThe following essay is taken from Ma‘mūlāt Ashrafia:Ĥađrat himself recites in tarāwīĥ most of the time except in casesof dire necessity. He recited one and quarter part until he reachedhalf the Qur’an, then one part ever day, often finishing by the 27thof Ramadan. One must hear Ĥađrat’s recitation for himself tounderstand the beauty of his recitation. He recites slowly [tartīl]and clearly, as is the habit in tarāwīĥ. If he ever needed to recitefaster, it was as though he were reciting slowly, every word beingpronounced and clear. Ĥađrat’s way of recitating and pausing[between the ayas] is unique and inimitable. His memorizationis so good he rarely stumbles in assimilated ayas and it seems as69 Sawāniĥ-e-Shaikh al-Hind.133
