the ramadan of shaikh muĤ ammud zakariyyĀhave the strength to perform tarāwīĥ” but I didn’t have the courageto say it. But when Ĥađrat asked, “Maulwī Zakariyyā, how areyou feeling?” I said, keeping al-Hāj Maqbūl in mind, “I am reallytired.” I was shocked and regretful to see that Ĥađrat prayed thewhole tarāwīĥ with ease and calm. I would steal glances at him andbe filled with regret because of what I said. Many times I thoughtI should tell Ĥađrat that I said this because of al-Hāj Maqbūl butstayed quiet for fear of the consequences. I clearly remember thatI came up to Ĥađrat a few times and wished to say “Ĥađrat, I saidthis because of your condition” but again, the thought of al-HājMaqbūl getting angry with me forced me back and I left the matteralone. To this day, I feel regretful and upset for what I said toĤađrat. 60Devotions of ĤaĎrat al-Hāj Imdād Allāh 61Ĥađrat Ĥakīm al-Umma highlighted al-Hāj Imdād Allāh’s devotionsfor Ramadan in his book Imdād al-Mushtāq that he [al-HājImdād Allāh] said, “I tell you this for your benefit. This person[referring to himself ] never slept most nights of his youth, especiallyin the blessed month of Ramadan. After Maghrib, twoyoung boys, one Ĥāfiż Yūsuf [son of Ĥāfiż Ďāmin] and my nephewĤāfiż Aĥmad Ĥussain recited [i.e. they led Ĥađrat in voluntaryśalāt] 1 ¼ part each until ‘Ishā. After ‘Ishā, two ĥuffāż recitedone after the other until half the night and then two ĥuffāżone after the other in tahajjud. In essence, the whole night wasspent in worship.60 Due to Shaikh Zakariyyā’s love for his shaikh, he felt guilty for excusinghimself from leading him in tarāwīĥ, especially when he saw that his shaikhstill ended up praying tarāwīĥ and his excuse for not leading in tarāwīĥ failed tofulfill its purpose.61 Ĥājī Imdād Allāh (1817-1899) - was the shaikh of Shaikh Qāsim Nānautwī,Shaikh Rashīd Aĥmad Gangohī, and Shaikh Ashraf ‘Alī Thānwī. Though he wasnot a scholar Shaikh Qāsim called him an ‘ālim garr or maker of scholars. One canmeasure his spirituality by the work and lives of his three greatest successors.124
