Ramadan of the Eldersown Qur’an in voluntary śalāt. On this journey, they disembarkedfrom Jeddah at exactly Maghrib time. Everyone was so exhausted itwas difficult to pray the obligatory śalāt let alone tarāwīĥ. Despitethat, Ĥađrat prayed some of his tarāwīĥ standing and some whilesitting. What strength! It is easy to describe his beautiful outwardqualities but, I swear by Allah u, it is not possible for me toexpress in words the extraordinary inner [spiritual] qualities hewas blessed with. They are such as to truly leave me at a loss forwords. It is already mentioned in Āp Bītī [part 4] that Ĥađrat’s vertigowas so severe he could not lift his head off the pillow. I experiencedthe same thing in my childhood, though I also had nausea andvomiting. The smell of the ship [especially during refueling whenthe pungent smell of fuel pemeated the whole ship] made me dizzyand then I would start to vomit. On the 29th of Sha‘bān/ May 1920,Ĥađrat asked,“Tell me, what are we to do about tarāwīĥ. ” I replied,“I can control the dizziness but what am I going to do if I vomitduring tarāwīĥ, Ĥađrat.”Ĥađrat said,“Don’t worry about that; if it happens, just go and performablution.”Despite his old age, enfeebled state, and the violent swayingcommon to small ships, Ĥađrat prayed his whole tarāwīĥ standing. As Shaikh Mīrati mentioned previously, once they arrived inJeddah, everyone was extremely exhausted and could barely stand.Al-Hāj Maqbūl [May Allah u forgive him] was angry with me.He said, “Don’t make him [Ĥađrat] stand because he wants to, andlook at his age and condition also.” I was already fearful that al-HājMaqbūl might cut me off. 59 After all, it was because of him that I satwith Ĥađrat in dinner. He told me I must tell Ĥađrat that, “I don’t59 As al-Ĥāj Maqbūl was Shaikh Khalīl’s main helper and also managed hisaffairs, he had clout with the Shaikh. This is why Shaikh Zakariyyā feared thathe might find an excuse or way to force him [Shaikh Zakariyyā] to join anothergroup thus separating Shaikh Zakariyyā from his shaikh.123
